I’m a mental health social worker in the US and the most frustrating part is knowing that the resources are limited and you can’t really help your clients in the way that they need it, but still having to put on a smile and tell them that everything will be fine. The mental health system here sucks and I absolutely hate being a mental health social worker. I love my clients, I just hate that I can’t really help them. I have to go back to school for a career change. Nursing was my first love anyway...

I've been a social worker for 13 years and burnt out for about 10 years. I work for a hospital and make less than $35k, loads of demanding patients, and I just don't care anymore. I'm tired. I do the same admin duties of a nurse but make about $20k less. I have to work a side job. I have a master's in public administration. I can't wait to change careers, make more money, have a flexible schedule and be happy again.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I recently left my social work job and am in the process of "figuring it out" too. I think what made me know for sure, was when going on vacation wasn't enough. Self care wasn't enough and I was beginning to feel like what I was doing was "pointless/ineffective" (I hate to say that). SW is such a tough job and burnout, to a certain degree is inevitable, tbh. I think for those of us who are social workers, there is a part of us that will always want to help in one way or the other. It's just about being able to do so in a way that isn't so emotionally draining. I wish you all the best! Cheers to you and your new journey!!

Hi Jasmine. I get all points you’ve made. I’ve been a qualified and practising social worker for 15yrs. All within children’s work. Anytime I wanted a change I moved across practice areas. I’ve been in child protection, child disabilities, child mental health, LAC and adoption work. I love my career, and helping vulnerable children. But yes burn out, exhaustion, unrealistic expectations all add to the pressure. There’s days when I fleetingly think I need a change of career. But I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. Anyway. Good luck in your choices! And I hope to keep seeing more videos from you 👍🏽

I got my BSW in 2006 and have practiced as social worker a combined total of 6 years in with two jobs and two internships. Social work has a high capacity for burn out and I am at the same place you are. I think there is nothing wrong with reevaluating what you want, no matter what age you are. I went to undergrad and part of grad school with women who had children my age or older and who wanted a change in careers, one being a nurse who practiced for over two decades. As we grow and as we get older, we change. I am actually working on certifying as an elementary teacher next year, but I appreciate everything being in social work has taught me. Basically, my very long post boils down to is if you feel you need the time away, then take it. It is good for you and good for your clients present and future. Too many times we are told quitting is a bad thing to do, but a lot of times it is the healthiest thing we can do for ourselves.

Im in this same exact position and I just started in 3 months. Im learning so much, but I am so overwhelmed. I feel like Im not doing anything right. Im bombarded with new tasks every turn, which then it keeps me backed up and then i forget to focus on my task. Ive learned that I cannot multitask because Its so much going on. I actually cried of how overwhelmed I was to the point where i felt sad for a few days. My clients are so demanding and Im trying to balance things, and I just cannot at this time. But im not sure if its just a completely whole new job (which it is), or if I keep going maybe things will change. But as of right now, I feel drained and sad. I really hope you continue finding your journey. SW is so challenging.

I’m actually doing my internship for Msw and I am working with older adults so I’m gonna see how this goes . With adults it’s less responsibility on you because their adults so it becomes a partnership rather than you doing , doing , and doing like for a child .

I'm in a very similar spot right now mentally. I've only been in the field full-time for a year and I feel like I'm giving up to a certain extent. I started with a company a few months after graduating and worked as a mental health therapist. My supervision changed and I ended up leaving two months later. The situation was very toxic and there were illegal things going on. I moved to another company and am working as a mental health therapist. This organization has AMAZING co-workers and supervision, but my pay is not enough to even afford rent since I'm not up to a full caseload yet. And each week my clients come in with problems out of their control that I can't help them with because the system is broken. I'm considering bowing out now but have no idea what else I would do where I could make a decent living.

Would you say the field of social work is your calling? What is your passion? Does what comes to mind make you happy internally and externally? Can you talk about it all day if you could? Whether you choose to stay where you are or take time off my suggestion is search your needs personal and professional. How has your self care been going? Practice self care with the purpose of self exploration. You are evolving and it is ok if you need to re-evaluate life! Do a pros and cons list while checking in with how each point makes you feel. During this time I challenge you to also go through your videos. What and who do you see on the screen? Does it excite you? What is it speaking to you? Overall follow your gut..i think our gut is smarter than our brain sometimes. Lol. I hope this helps!! Many blessings to you.!!

I knew this semester (spring) social work isn't going to be my long term career. I've applied different positions like academic advisors, guidance counselors, admission counselors, college advisor, administration & hopefully get a position by the time of August. I'm glad of reading other people's comments & express how they feel of being this field & it makes feel like I'm not alone. I want to thank you for your transparency & whatever you are doing I hope you keep thriving 🙏🙏

Sorry to hear that. Social work is a challenge career in any population you served. I have my BSW and then went for MSW that is master in social work for 1 year. Also, have my nursing assistant license before I graduated from college. I work temporary with it because I don't want to loss my license. It helps me change jobs whenever I get tired from social work. The salary from nursing assistant and MSW depending on location in USA is the same. The reason I did social work in college is I wanted to open an organization in Ghana, but due to corruption in Ghana, I have to put my project on hold. Great video. I recently got a senior position at a supported living community. It has aspects of social work and the term support worker suits it well. I'm new in the position and enjoy it, however, it has made me realize that, NO I'm not going to pursue a Master's of Social Work (I have BA in Sociology) and there has to be a time limit on this type of work. Mind you I've wanted to be a social worker for yearssssssss. Now my eyes have opened up. For now this job is great for me, however, I see the future. Lol. I know what I want to do for the future. It is unconventional so I'll work on building the platform for it in the meantime. What about starring a non profit organization where you can also help people but on your terms (in a sense, bc NGOs also have red tape).

my previous career was nursing, we used to call this "compassion fatigue". It's definitely a real thing, but it is manageable. Most jobs you can "pretend" to give a crap about stuff, actual caring fields (like nursing, and social work) require a highly empathetic approach to do it well, that's actually tiring. I used to toy with the idea of a career change, for me it was bank-robbery, or piracy on the high seas (turns out "space cowboy" isn't a real job dammit), of course, much as I'd moan and groan about it, I secretly loved doing it, so those "career changes" were non-starters. I developed a pretty black sense of humour as a coping strategy, and I found that worked exceedingly well even in hugely trying times, but social work is pretty PC, so, pick your audience for sure. I don't think social work does the whole "informal debrief" as well as nursing, largely because of the prevailing ultra-PC culture that exists within it, but don't underestimate the value of taking the "caring" gloves off and having a right moan to someone, it can really help. One of the good things about social work, is the emphasis on self-care, so, taking a few months off to go learn yoga in a mountain retreat, make boutique soaps from organically grown hemp-seeds, or train up for an amatuer MMA fight is kinda quite kosher. Have you got someone you can really talk to about this stuff? losing the filter and absolutely NOT practicing self-censure can really help illuminate what's going on as well. Failing that, there's always the concept of a brief (or extended) stint in a non-clinical role, project manager positions come up pretty regular, that could be a thing to think about. I would suggest spending a bit of time figuring out exactly "where the shoe pinches" is probably a fairly high priority though, figure out precisely WHAT is annoying you, then figure out WHY and you'll be more than half way there to fixing it :)

I've set a goal to leave by the end of this year, God willing. Therefore I seriously need to have a plan of what I'm going to do next eeek! Im considering training as a counsellor or working in a non statutory organisations, less pay but I'd rather that than getting depressed and burnout. Im not sure which sector you are in but you u could try working as an independent social worker doing form f (foster carers assessments), that would give you more flexibility...I wish you the best of luck in your decision .

I have been following your videos on SW after applying for a MSW in US. However, hearing this information now with other negative comments relating to pay, stress etc hmmmmmm. Am thinking of something else already. The funny part being that my bachelor's degree was in business administration what becomes my faith pursuing a MSW . Am just having a rethink right now.

Just wanted to tell you that we all have moments like this in social work. Don't let it shake you. Give it some thought...and if you wind up going a different route, at least you had this experience.

Are you based in England? If so what part of the country are you currently working in this video, you don't have to say which local authority.

Hi Jasmine! I would suggest volunteering abroad. That will give you a break; totally change of environment/ routine and at the same time you won't be away from the general idea of the social work profession, plus it will count as a valuable experience at your CV. All the best and take care!

Try therapy talking to someone you don’t know helps a lot and put things in perspective for you. I did the youth advocacy program and my clients had me feeling the same way but you can only give them the tools to do better if they choose not to then you did what you could do.

wellbeing officer for students perhaps? why not try acute medicine wards or even in a rehab centre (like with other allied health professionals)

another thing i noticed is that you like to see progress in your practice - so maybe working in acute settings or in places where specialist rehab for like stroke patients - basically somewhere you can see progress on a daily basis.. might be helpful to spark ur passion back in social work :)

Feel like quitting your social work job? You should consider getting in touch with Justin Clay: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaG4ipWii6yfp6s We've worked together for about a year. He specializes in helping professionals who work with at risk youth to avoid burnout... and to get rejuvenated (so they can help more kids).

Hi Jasmine, I love your videos. I felt in a similar position to you about six months ago. I worked at a domestic violence center with the children for 4 years and I didn’t feel supported by my management and got tired of hearing traumatic stories also so I decided to leave. Now I work at another agency with children but I am doing targeted case management. So far it has been way less draining and I feel happier and I still know that I am helping people. Maybe a switch of agency with a less intensive position could help!

Is it possible to become a social worker with a degree in psychology
@VanessaMwiza
@VanessaMwiza 5 жыл бұрын
Isha Lewis yes definitely but most universities would require some experience with working with vulnerable people, like carework, support work or teenagers or something similar. Your degree will definitely help you a lot in this field of work.
