I left social work after only 6 months because I was struggling so badly with my mental/physical health. Took an entry level position at the art museum right by my house and, while I'm still reeling from the identity crisis, I am 1000X happier and more at ease than I was there. I was miserable, stressed out, and borderline delirious when I left because I was so burnt out. Now I'm in just a regular job that I can absolutely see myself going further in, but can also easily quit with no sweat. Thank you for sharing because I thought I was alone and crazy!

I love social work because I am idealistic.. But working with traumatized people 8 hours a day 5 days a week wears on you. I have always been introverted, I also have social anxiety. and wondered why I wasn't thriving in the social work jobs I had been hired for in the past but after extensive therapy I realized what my issues were; my personality conflicted with the work and I couldn't deal with the systems that social workers are forced to work in that prevents real change for clients. I value my knowledge but I know my skills are more suited for a different field. I decided not to get my MSW and am getting certified as a Paralegal and graduate in May. I don't regret my decision one bit. I appreciate your video, it's nice knowing that I'm not alone!

@@mariangelamariangela4199 they have definitely been helpful! I work as a paralegal now for a plaintiff personal injury firm. I find that my SW skills have transferred over really well advocating for injured folk against greedy insurance companies. But a lot of it can be mundane and you have to remain organized and use problem solving skills. Overall I really like it. It really is a unique career!

This is really helpful. I’m an LCSW and 6 months ago I quit my second job in social work. I almost took another one a couple weeks ago and I bailed right before it started. My PTSD from this work was activated and in full force. I’m about to apply for work at a supermarket making sandwiches. I’d rather do that then go back this field. I appreciate you touching on the identity crisis. I feel the same way but I think I’ll get over it. I’m 34 about to turn 35 and I’m remembering that I was person before social work. I’ll stay in private practice to make extra money but I’d rather make sandwiches then take a full-time social work position. Thank you

Yes, I just finished two months of child welfare training and knew that once I finished my age would throw me to the wolves. I received no on the job training, they only had two case workers with over a hundred cases between them. One supervisor who has cases of their own. They had 5 ppl leave within one month. There was no professional dress or behavior. I would go into the agency on our "Field days" hoping I would be able to shadow someone on a home visit and would see the family support workers twerking and gossiping about cases and the children. I was told on daily basis that to get ready to cry alot just don't do it in front of the families. I was told that for court I was not allowed to tell the judge I don't know regarding a case ,even if you just get it 2 hours before. Unrealistic expectations coupled with almost non existent training just made my stomach sick. Also we are required to use our own vehicles to take kids around . We would get paid for mileage but no coverage in case the youth vandalize your personal property. I just couldn't see myself going forward. But now I'm just feeling lost and not sure what to do next. It's scary.

I left social work 15 years ago and honestly the first job I had after doing so, was like walking on air. I looked forward to going to work, there were no reports to write, no bureocratic b.s, and my work mate and I felt uplifted at work because I was just so happy. (True story). My new job was working with kids. didnt experience any of what was mentioned here, I guess everyone is different. I dont miss the bureocratic b.s, the high and complex case loads, and the inability to be authentically and naturally myself due to counselling training. Its also freed up more time for me. I wanted a simple job. Im a lot happier. Honestly, dont look back! These days I am still working with kids - my own. I am her tutor and absolutely love home schooling and teaching. I love the values of social work though, much respect to the profession. X

Thank you for this video. I've been in social work for almost 2 years, but in a helping professionion for nearly 9. I've been experiencing mental decline and emotional turmoil at an alarming rate. I qualified in '92. Badly stressed in several periods during my SW career (child protection, mental health, adult social care, substance misuse, criminal justice) - friends later told me I was not a very nice person when I was stressed. Burnt out very, very badly indeed on one occasion about 15 years ago - I literally collapsed at home and could not get out of bed properly; very scary experience. Felt the same dangerous warning signs in early '18 and eventually left SW in early '19. When you're buried deep in an unhappy or unhealthy situation in your work over a long period of time, you lose perspective and you feel you cannot see the horizon or any light at the end of the tunnel. Everything in your life (what's left of it after a typical ten hour day) becomes horribly tainted with the negativity of your daily work. When you eventually take the plunge to leave SW, you feel like Sméagol slowly coming out of his caves from under the Misty Mountains and out into the sunlight (but without entering the winding path to Mount Doom!)

I'll be starting my first year to become a social worker next fall, being the first in my family to even consider a career that involved secondary education is a big deal.. I grew up poor and know investing into something that might not be worth it in the long run is frightening to me.. Being a person who whole heartedly came from an abusive and traumatic household inspires me to help even the slightest bit to those who share a similar situation and knowing I'd die happy being the smallest escape/joy in someone's life.. I also know that all my life I've wanted to free myself from all of the disfunction I encountered and knowing I'd work toward being around people who struggle with things I did would only keep me around the one thing I've tried to flee, and that's incredibly frightening... but I also know in my heart if I didn't help others in anyway I could I wouldn't be satisfied with my life. It's a matter of taking a chance and trusting my heart, it's a matter of not knowing but also knowing that if I didn't try I wouldn't be fulfilled.

@@karlarios5609 When I first went to college, I got my associates in Marketing Management. I never got a job in that field, but the degree did help as I took accounting as one of my classes. I had a lot of customer service/people skills that were transferable to my business job now because I would still be working with clients.

I agree with everything that you are saying and yes, I agree a break needs to happen in between. I am currently in the process of figuring out how to find a job that "I can do my job and go home." And have it still be fulfilling. It is a tough balance but I do agree. Time for a reset is necessary.

I know this video was made a long time ago but I had to look up what others had to say. This was sooo helpful. I currently started my first true social work job about 3 months ago. I'm now starting to realize at 26 that this is NOT for me at all. I can't deal with the stress, demands, feeling lost almost everyday, and dealing with clients that are sometimes hostile or don't follow through with our companies policies. I also have my own mental/physical health to deal with and this job makes it worse. I've started gaining weight more, started to become more depressed, etc. I just have to look out for myself. I've started looking into other jobs and may become a Loan Administrator. I feel I'll be much happier working a less stress job and its a job, not a career which I prefer. Of course my degree was somewhat a waste but it helps with my pay at least.

I need to get this out of my chest so please don't grill me over what I'm about to say. I'm working as a caseworker. I took this job a month ago and my caseload is insane! 25 people on caseload. My clients have a very low education level and most expect me to do EVERYTHING for them. Most don't even want to try and go immediately to " I don't know how to do it and can't try because I don't speak English." I have so many things to do that I can't be doing everything for everybody but that's what my supervisors expect me to do. I'm only a month in, and I want to quit. Oh he'll to the no! I'm not going to get a master's in social work as I had planned.

I am happy to see I am not the only one who feels this way. I’ve been in the mental health field for 10 years and graduated with my MSW in June 2021. I left all Sw related positions and went into the service industry. I never felt so free in mind and time. Don't, if you think you were doing good, remember that the people whose lives you may have made worse are not free to tell you that. I can't tell the LCSW in my case what they are doing. If you do , they hide behind their over-educated speak and if you don't understand or agree with it, obviously you are the problem. What is the point of this job? Do you all take responsibility when you mess up, or do you ignore the outcomes of your work and just keep collecting that paycheck?

This was very helpful! I've been working in Education for the past 10 years with a Doctorate in Psychology and Masters in English Literature. I had considered going back to school for Counseling or Social Work but opted instead to do my MBA. Ana Mejia if confidence/shyness is the only thing, I wouldn’t let that discourage you! I would focus on making genuine connections and relationships (obviously professional) with your clients, and the confidence will come naturally. Remember why you entered the field, and be a sponge when it comes to absorbing all of the learning experiences that’ll come your way.

I think we need all types of people in social work, being a social butterfly is not a requirement. I totally struggled with those same feelings but you will know how to speak up when it matters.

KTS 34 I quickly realized I wasn’t getting any traction applying for recruiter positions, so I ended up accepting a recruiting/operations assistant role at an IT consulting firm. It was a pay cut at first, but I learned quickly and within 6 months was promoted to a recruiter. That was less than 2 years ago and I’ve almost doubled my income since! I picked IT because it’s one of the higher paying industries when it comes to staffing. My advice is to not go back to school unless you’re 100% sure you absolutely need to do so. Good luck!!

Another one bites the dust... Social services is a hard field to work in. Not surprised you bailed. Social services are poorly funded, maligned by conservatives, and defunded by politicians who represent corporate donors. If you want social workers to stay, the political climate has to change so that the government truly helps its citizens.

What type of social worker were you? There are many places a social worker can work, insurance companies, government, quality control, training. If someone just worked in child services, you can’t dismiss the whole career.

I worked in adoption and CPS. There are definitely avenues for everyone who wants to be in the field. I don’t think I dismissed social work as a whole, was just speaking from my experience/perspective and looking to help others who are in the same shoes I was in.

After an associates and a bachelor degree in social work that was the hardest thing I ever went through (especially the last semester juggling 6 classes), becoming burnt out, and having no interest in the curriculum, I truly don’t know if the field is for me. My internship robbed me of what I wanted to do which was shadowing therapists in a mental health clinic and now since I’ve graduated I can’t even find a job in what I want to gain experience in. I was a caregiver for two years while studying for my BSW, and it was the best job I ever had even though it didn’t pay much. It made me think of becoming a nurse but I don’t know which path I should take. Either go for my MSW and still have doubts on the field or more regrets, or go for another associates or bachelors but in nursing…I guess my question is, how do you know what you want to do in life?

That’s the big question isn’t it?! If you’re doubting social work, I wouldn’t get your MSW. I’d work for a year or so before making any big decisions. That’s just my opinion though! Good luck!

Imagine this person is supposed to be an individually you should be able to talk to and feel comfortable with, instead this practicum coordinator fail me intentionally because I had to complain to the Head of the faculty for them. I had to endure classes where this person would make underlying remarks at me. I am so hurt over failing this course at the university, I am at they don't go against each other and I could end up being victimised again. When I was on my practicum I had to pay for everything out of my own pocket bus fare clothes and lunch. The practicum in my country is 8 months.

Only people who truly understand what we go through in this field are the ones who are actually in it or have previously been in it rather investigations, foster care ,adoptions etc. It's difficult and we need to practice self care. As hard as it is to find time to do it's a must to survive in this field. I can go on and on because I have been in this field for 5 years but I will run out of space🤦🏾‍♀️ This was very helpful, never thought about what may come after as much as most of us feel we want to leave. A LCSW RUINED my family. I thought getting a Gaurdian Ad Liedem would be a good thing in my dispute with my ex over our kid but it turned out to be a LCSW, turns out they made things WORSE. They spent very little time with the child and was just throwing all these diagnosis on her. If you ask them ANY questions they give you a canned over educated answer. You can't understand what they are talking about and the results speak for themselves. If you think being a Social Worker does not entail doing more harm than good at times, you are BLIND. Also they charged $250 an hour for a report that relied mostly on one sides story. It was a joke and the LCSW was obviously against Men, cause that is what "Social Work" is about now. She did nothing to try to help the child maintain a relationship with the father. The sad part is these people will never take responsibility for the outcome, they always hide behind their over-educated speak and "doing their job". Please find another career.

What job in this career field could you recommend for someone who is highly interested in psychiatric/mental health social work? Background: I recently obtained my BA in Sociology and am working full-time in special education, as well as in youth residential care. (I work with the most diverse population of traumatized adolescents. Can be very sad but also extremely fulfilling.) Also, I served 6 years in the US Army and consider myself to be a very emotionally resilient and reliable individual. I understand this career is not for everyone, however I just have a passion for it. The organization I’m currently with is amazing, however my BA degree only allows for so much advancement in my career here, or anywhere in Los Angeles county for that matter. I’m learning that for any long term career I’m going to need my MSW, or LCSW? I think it would be so cool to work in a Psych Hospital/Ward or any kind of highly demanding and stressful Mental Health facility. Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated!

What an awesome background! Honestly hearing you talk about the type of environment you want to be in reminds me of the hospital my fiancé works in - he’s a forensic psychiatric nurse and works at a mental health hospital/facility specifically with criminals with severe mental health diagnoses. When they’re deemed incompetent to stand trial, they go to his unit. Most of them are violent. Those kinds of hospitals also have social workers too. I assume it’d be required to have an MSW. I would only recommend pursuing an LCSW if you’re true interest is sitting down and doing actual therapy with folks. Your role is more so an actual therapist. Another area I could see you in is juvenile delinquency work - there’s a ton of need for social workers in that department at counties. If you’re not interested in criminology at all then I think continuing to work with adolescents in residential care or in a specialized school would be a great avenue! You’re right that MSW opens doors, but honestly I was surprised when I was out in the field how many of my peers did not have a masters degree. Got it, so LCSW not exactly relevant to or needed for what I’d like to pursue. Forensics work sounds really cool, but not exactly in my interest, great recommendation though! I’ve considered looking into my local Youth Detention/juvenile facilities, perhaps I should actually do that now lol. And yes I still need to figure out whether or not a Masters program is even necessary for me and what I’d like to do. What jobs did your peers have that did not require an MSW as a prerequisite? If I intend to go into more advanced social work, compared to what I’m doing now, wouldn’t an MSW only benefit me in a variety of ways? Mathews Varughese you definitely would be able to pursue your MSW, regardless of background! People come to the program with all different types of Bachelor degrees. The only difference is that it will take you longer to complete since you’ll have additional courses. For example in the states if you have your BSW, you can get your MSW in 1-1.5 years full-time or 2-2.5 years part-time. If you don’t have your BSW and pursue your MSW, that typically takes about 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time. Good luck!! :)

That is soooo hard, Mathews... I have Bachelor of Arts and currently doing Master of Social Work. A big mistake..... You have to "catch up" with three years of Bachelor degree somehow....And this is a "heavy" academic language... endless sociological theories....endless bla..bla..bla... "Bird's language" you never going to use. Nobody cares, nobody helps you.... Teachers say that you are already on Master level, so, you have to find answers on your questions yourself. Research the Internet - all answers there (there are the answers I have heard from our teachers). Think 10 times before making such a choice!

Tanya Hanson-Meier Honestly, I would only go back to school if you’re absolutely sure and have a clear direction/idea with what you want to do with it. If you’re open to it, maybe see if you can get an entry level social work related job just to see how you feel about it first. I know I wish after getting my BSW I had taken the time to just work before getting my MSW! I probably wouldn’t have even bothered getting the extra degree knowing what I know now. Everyone is different though. I wish you all the best!

Maybe some one can give some advice. I am currently in my first quarter of a three year MSW program in Southern California. I thought I was set on this, but I am getting burnt out and really wondering if I see myself completing this whole three year program. It is a lot with the internship hours also. I know the MSW will open a lot of career doors, but it is also super Expensive (like 75-80k). I have been accepted to a MBM program w/ entrepreneurship emphasis (18 Months and 30k). Stephanie Kurian I think there’s definitely some social work specialities that don’t require you to do home visits/use a car, for example working in a hospital. If that’s the sole reason why you’re looking to make a move you just might be in the wrong specialty. But the population you’re serving should be of interest as well!
