I think the first thing would be handlebars because you have a long ride coming up? That is a great looking bike. But hey don't say that touring bikes are for old people. I don't feel old and just got an RGU. My wife and I tour and it makes the most sense for us. Ride Safe. And I can't wait to see the bike with the touring pack installed.

Man, I'm so happy for you. The feeling of owning one of these must have no comparison. I visited my first Harley dealership yesterday (There are none where I live) and thought to myself "Boy, I wish John worked here". But of course, being in Lima and thousands of miles away from Chattahoochee, that seemed like a far stretch. Anyways, first time I saw a Fat Boy in the flesh (My first love ever since The Terminator II), and right then and there I knew it..."She will be mine, oh yeah...she will be mine"

John that was a good choice I bought a heritage in 2002 and will have it till the day I die that is the type of bike a heritage is. every time I go to the dealer they ask if its for sell and I tell them NO. I am looking at buying a new limited but the heritage will always be with me. when I road the bike to work for the first time the guys said it was an old mans bike also at that time I was 44 so I told them it a good thing I was old enough to qualify. the other bikes are like a one night stand but a heritage is you second wife. good luck.

"I had a friend describe it once." LOL Thanks to all of the KZbinrs that provide the info to guide all the rest of us. Really appreciate your channel, Matt Laidlaw, Blockhead, Bike N' Bird, Dan Dan the Fireman, Etc. I ended up on a 2018 Road Glide "Old Man" (You know the one with chrome). A lot of it had to do with wind management. I tried a Street Glide with several different windshields and while buffeting got better as the windshield got higher I still had issues when I was looking through the windshield. Tried the Road Glide and the issue was non-existent. Really love this bike. I've had it for maybe 2 1/2 months. She's about to have to go in for the 5000 mile service. Gonna ride it 'til shes's old and tired. Like you, I had a trip planned and needed to get my 1000 mile service done before riding the Blue Ridge Parkway. The ealer suggested that I be as close to 1000 miles as possible. Got a few 150 mile rides in on the mountains near me. Also rode 200 miles on back roads to get BBQ, Scott's BBQ in Hemingway, SC (and add some miles) at varying speeds.Rolled into the dealer for service with 996 miles in the odometer.

I am really looking forward to your comments on break-in. I hear so many "my friend the mech says..." Also, I'm running a 14UL and 18RKS. The RKS is my platform to play with. It's running stage 4 and I went ahead and replaced the head pipes which I think I heard you say you were considering? It will be great to hear what a mechanic has to say about his own new bike, warranties, and how he thinks about upgrades. I feel like I'm taking a bit of a risk with the RKS but even after the head pipe change my shop (I love my shop) swapped out a bad voltage regulator with no questions about the warranty. Just did it. I'm a little surprised you didn't go with a touring bike. I love the Softails - my first HD was a Fat Boy. I suppose it is how you plan to use the bike. I (possibly wrongly) consider the Softails as a commuting and occasional long haul bike where the touring bikes are the road bikes. Finally, I'd really enjoy hearing what you think about what "my friend the mech says..." Maybe a show on debunking or confirming comments in the wild or maybe just one per show? I've recently changed my style of riding a bit and I'm not sure if I'm doing good or bad for the bikes. Where I'd normally cruise between say 1800 and 2500 RPM I'm now riding between 3000 and 4500 RPM. The RKS seems to like it but the UL maybe not so much. After riding about 16 years now, you'd think things like this wouldn't still be bugging me. And yes, the change was due to a friend who's "friend the mech says" it is good for the bike. Many thanks for the down to earth videos.

It is so great to see you basking in the glow of buying a new bike. Very happy for you. Before going on your trip, I think adding crash bars with highway pegs would be the way to go. Safety and comfort first and they will save you the heartache the first time you lose your footing on. a wet parking lot and tip over. With such a long ride ahead of you, I am a little surprised you did not get one of the Glides (Street or Road). But, then, I am on old guy who loves his 2016 billet silver Road King - art work you can ride.

Congrats on the new bike, it is a beauty. I noticed you put you vapor in the saddle bag, word to the wise, make sure it is off when doing this, I thought I turned mine off one day in a rain storm, well, I did not, apparently the button was being pushed, and burned all the fluid out of it, also melted the inside of the tank out, very dangerous, lol. I can relate to the not being old enough stage, when I was 28 I bought an 06 RK, now at 40 I went with the Geezer bike, 2018 Ultra Limited. No worries on the break-in, ride it like you stole it, LMAO.

Good practical choice. The top box is a good first mod. I'd save the pipes and handlebars until after your long trip. Neither will make that easier or more enjoyable. Without your windscreen, apes at extended highway speeds will make you regret the day you were born. Cute for bar hopping, but not meant for travel. In lieu of white walls, I'd love to see someone do up those rims with a "Stripe it All" glow in the dark white tape. I am curious if losing the windscreen firms up the front suspension any. It seemed kinda flaccid to me and the other Softies I've ridden didn't. Might have just been the particular bike I was on.

I knew it! Great choice! Hard break in those piston rings. I love telling people I only do hard break in’s. They get all defensive, then I have to explain how heat and pressure expands the rings so they will seat properly. People are surprised when I show, or tell them the manufacturer has already red lined the engine on a dyno before they even bought it. Any way, you know this already. Great Bike. Nothing like the excitement of getting a New Bike. Been riding since 1964. 250 Zundapp, 650 Triumph, and then H.D. Bought my 1st new Bike Jan. 2017. Been riding Ultras for 20 plus years, needed something a little lighter due to leg Surgeries. Got a 2017 S.G.S. and put a Tour pak on it. Its lighter, center of gravity is lower and its lower to the ground. LOVE it. Wish I could go to Paris H.D. with you. Good Luck on the trip and on breaking the record.

I’ve got a 2000 FLSTC (yes an old man bike) it’s got about 68,000 miles on it. I know it’s low mileage but I’ve got a couple other bikes that I ride as well. But it is absolutely my favorite bike to ride, many 600 mile days on this bike. I’ve ridden the same bike you bought on a demo ride. Massive improvement. But until I get a windfall I’m keeping my bike. The first thing you need to do is the proper break in, then you need to get rid of that horn from Yamaha. Then of course you can go through the pipes and the bars and get the heel toe shifter. Excellent choice!

Congrats on the new bike!! Nice choice!! I went from an a 06 1200 custom to a 14 Slim in 2015. Loved it, but wasn't friendly for 2up, and my daughter got the HD bug this year. Had test rode a heritage 107 that I really liked but ended up on a 09 Road King instead. Minimum 200km round trip if I rode to the next town over, and alot of 500km+, the touring made more sense. I wanted my kid to be as comfy as she could be. First things to do....bars and stage 1. Make it fit right, and more fun to ride!! Safe riding, I'm going to have to swing up and drop you off some canadian dealer shirts next time I'm down in Georgia.

Nice ride and color. First thing. Very FIRST. Pipes!!! Fishtails. True two into two fishtails. No crossover tube. Old school. Better sound. Insignificant horsepower gain or loss. The power commander is waste of money. The ECU will adapt. Second, put on a low restriction dry air filter. It will run and sound great. Leave the windshield. It’s not old man style. It will save you from bugs and road crap. Plus you can go without a helmet or if you are in a state with helmet law you can wear a piss pot helmet. So much more comfortable. Full face helmet on a HD looks goofy anyway. If you’re worried about risk then get a convertible. Ride on brother!

Congrats John! A VERY nice score! What would we suggest you do first all depends on timing and what your budget is. If the Engine has gone through the "Break-in" process, Engine/HP mods would be a good choice! If you do not have the "Break-in" done, I'd look at the Bars and other items that will make your time in the Saddle (Saddle being one) more comfortable. Regarding the Stage 4... it is often said the Modified Engines do NOT make power until you hit the higher RPM range, this is true. It is also true that you do not need the max HP/Torque all the time. My FLHX has had a thing or two done to it. If I need the max HP/Torque (for passing or a good time messing with the "Donor Cycle" riders mind while going down the highway) I drop it a few gears and open the Throttle. One of my riding friends says I'm short shifting because of how fast I crank thru the gears. I keep it between 3,500 and 6+ RPM and, in this case, the "bigger" Cam(s) work wonderfully! More SMILES per Mile(s)! They are not for everyone... if you plan on turning 1500 - 3000 RPM's all the time, do NOT do it!!! Put some pastel colored Streamers on the Bar Ends and... ah shit, I'm just messing with some of the readers. Keep up the GREAT work John!!! Thank you for doing what you do to make this a GREAT Channel!!! I'm looking forward to hearing all you have to say about your new Scooter!!!

Then Rinehart slip ons with black tips after break in. Then some Defiance Collection grips, passenger pegs & front axel nut covers. Contemplating V&H FP3 tuner, but in no rush because that 114 is a torque monster as is stock. Enjoy the break-in and vary those speeds before you unleash the beast. Fantastic to see you so excited. Looking forward to see the direction you take the bike. The full black looks majestic. One thing really surprises me is how the Co can't seem to get screens right. You say the Heritage buffets. I tried both screen heights on my fxfbs, both made feel like I was riding with the flu! Im an average body shape, 6'. Tried a road king and street glide, no better. Just wanted to take the wind force off my lower body, pushing me off the saddle at speed. In the end cut down the 15" screen to just above the horizontal frame. Better, no buffeting and less body pressure, but more wind noise than without. IMO Harley need to sort it out, or stop offering the screens.

Congrats and great choice! I love my Heritage. I have a 40mile commute and nothing beats the heritage for that kind of everyday riding. I'm not an old man but i do prefer chrome over everything being blacked out. Mostly because everyone is doing that these days. I would like to see fuel map changes, air cleaner, and pipes. Also personal touches like cup holders or cell phone mounts.

Huge Dirty Thubs Up!! Almost bought that bike in the same color. Test rode it, along with a Road King and RGS. I loved how the Heritage ride felt!! Really comfortable and nimble. However I ended up with the 2018 Road King , which was my dream bike, in Twisted Cherry. RK did not feel as nimble out of the gate, and it took a bit to get used to it's weight. (coming from a 2001 Sportster 1200 Custom, which I kept because I just couldn't part with it). However now riding my RK just feels like second nature. Just took a couple hundred miles. I do sometimes wonder though....what if. Ok, now that's out of the way, pipes first. Really excited for you as I know how you feel having just gone through this about a month and a half ago. Dig your channel!! (Sorry about the long comment, but this Vlog hit me good.) Looking forward to seeing what you do with it. Ride safe!

But being the poor Sportster owner I am I’ll have to pick one up used like 8 years from now... 😅👍🏻 But seriously, congratulations on the new ride...... Definitely get to changing those bars out, make it comfortable for the long haul.... 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻 Jay “Grumpy” Acworth GA.....

PS: Ergo's first for the long ride to Texas is my opinion, and if you're going new jugs, cams, pistons and rings, who cares about a break in? Thrash that 114 CI beast :D Pipes and intake will happen with the Stage 3/4 anyways, "as long as you're in there"... :-D

CONGRATULATIONS on ur new bike. First mod. That's so easy. Take off that old man windshield. Plus should cost u little to nothing. 2nd. Before performance make the bike comfortable to ride. Remember the Harley ride u are going on. Do bars first. Some will ? This but for a long ride u will thank this advice. BARS FIRST. Plus not that as pricey

IMHO the first thing you have to do is to remove the windshied. Later, whatever... I would change the exhaust systems (which anticipares following steps in "stages"), in Europe it's total differente environment due to law regulatoins, but in the States... C'mon! ... By the way, I was considering to change my dyna FXD 2000 (twin-can, no injection) just because the things you said about 2018 motors... well I'll keep it by the moment.

Gorgeous bike! Great choice. Why do a tour pack that you don't dig? Why not just sissybar/backrest, then get a large sissybar bag if you need the space for equipment (otherwise, strap whatever size backpack to the bar/seat)? You've already got the locking saddlebags, could do like a Biltwell EXFIL bag, 80 or 115!

Hey John. I did try a 18 Slim 107 last year. Nice, Smooth bike. My problem is the Forward Controls. The 1200 Custom now has almost 1900 Miles. Put a HD windshield(18"). Going to get bags soon. Can't decide on the 1200T style. Or the cheaper leather bags? Good thing HD didn't put a 6th gear on it. Had it up to 90 on the highway. She does it without a sweat.

Hey, John. My name is Julian and I work the parts counter at Old Glory HD in Laurel MD. I watch all of your videos and I'm a huge fan. So I was just talking with a co-worker of mine today about the 18-19 Heritage and Deluxe and if I remember right, you're my height and I say a nice set of smooth 14"-16" chubby bars is the way to go. Lose the windshield and put a set of true duals on it with some fishtails. Nothing crazy like 49" pipes but something to just reach past the tip of the fender. Keep the stock air cleaner cover and just do the high flow air cleaner with an FP3. Just my $.02. Enjoy the new ride and keep up the great work with the videos. My customers love your channel also.

This excites me so much! I bought my '18 Heritage 114 (vivid black) five months ago, put 5600 miles on it already. First thing I did was a set of V&H short shot pipes that I think sound killer. Added a FP3 and sundowner seat last month, made my ride to milwaukee for the HD115 party a dream. Want to do bars next, probably the 12" Zbars but not sure if I'll need to change the cables and electrical. Also not sure if I might opt for 14" bars or go all out at 16"? I'd love to see what you do and how install goes. Also plan on riding down for the Paris ride from Indianapolis. Going to try and go down & back in three days.

Hey John, I’ve been riding a Road Glide CVO for the last 5 years. Loved it but found it too heavy riding 2 up. We switched to the Heritage 114 in January. Love it. Congratulations on the new bike. I’ll be very interested in your upgrades. I’ve always had loud pipes. Love em but really like the stock pipes after 3500 miles. Not sure I’m gonna spend the big bucks for new pipes. We do all our maintenance so we will be watching. Thanks for your effort!👍
