Galaxies were one of the original muscle cars, look up 64 Galaxie lightweight sometime.
@TBullCajunbreadmaker4 жыл бұрын
I had two 64 Galaxie %00 XLs back in the day. Here is a couple of tips: If you have an exhaust pipe or header that is running close to your starter that is one of the reasons that it is really hard to start especially after it is already warm. The heat from your exhaust is heating up your starter and the battery has to really put out a lot of amps to turn the coils that have heated up and the windings will eventually burn the starter if you don't do something to shield the heat from the exhaust. The other thing about the missing-you need to check your timing and also use ported vaccum for your carb.
@coolfire9884 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the timing is too far advanced hence the hard starting, or sounding like battery is dead
@f100storys84 жыл бұрын
Could a the problem yes. Probably didn't also run long enough for the starter to get too hot, which would also result in a slow crank.
@MikesGarageBadDecisions4 жыл бұрын
I second that the timing is off. Check all the valve clearances (preload). If the clearances or lash is off or worn the motor will not run properly and act like the way its running. Do not go tearing everything apart yet.
@allaboutgears984 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking either excessive wear on the cam and lifters or the valves have hammered out the seats common problem since they took the lead out of the gas I had a 390 with hammered seats didn't smoke but missed like hell

@ET-gn9ms4 жыл бұрын
Craig- its either a timing, firing order, or valvetrain issue. Have you set the engine at #1 TDC, and checked the distributor rotor is pointing at the #1 wire post on the distributor cap? Then from there, check the firing order. Is your vacuum advance to the distributor hook to ported vacuum at the carb? If this is accidently plumbed to full manifold vacuum, the distributor will fully advance the timing as soon as you start the car. ET48

I like it, and cool to see these cars don't only appeal to older folks. I think the valve train noise could be worn rockers or pushrods. Easy enough to check and change and cheap too. If the pushrod end ball looks like the buildings at Red Square they are worn they should be completely round. A buck or so each for new ones. The rockers can get a worn circular groove in them from the valve, if so replace ones that are.

So awesome to see her finally on the road. I drove my f100 to the gas station to fill up Saturday. I think it’s finally running in. Like you said the transmission was slipping on your galaxie. I had a problem with my trans not shifting I had to shift myself on the way back it starts to shift on its own. And I’m thinking that it was the torque converter needed to fill up. I’m guessing my mechanic didn’t fill it up before putting it in. So happy with the outcome. And she’s sounding a lot better now to. Need to take her for a long run. Well done on your galaxie I love it.

@danielb21454 жыл бұрын
Always start with the easy and cheap things when you try to find a miss fire, so check spark at spark plugs first, then distributor cap, then spark plugs, sometimes Aug looks fine but doesn't fire. Also check Coil easier at night to see if it throws a spark somewhere. Then after all that, then you open it up.

It may have carbon build up on the valves. Get it up to operating temp and squirt some water into the carb until it starts to stumble then let it recover and repeat it. It often solves the problem. I've been doing it for over 30 years with great success if it is carbon. It beats tearing down the engine if it is just carboned up.

@russellnc4 жыл бұрын
hey Craig, I am impressed you like these old 64s, I have been in love with them since I was 16, the cars were only 8 years old then, I have have owned 4 and currently own 2, here is some advise on your engine...sounds like you definitely have a bad cylinder, I don't know what has been done to the engine currently in the car or the mileage on it, probably over 100,000 miles, these engines were built for a 100,000 mile use life, they had a 50,000 mile warranty from the factory or 3 years, which was excellent at the time. The cars ran on leaded gas, so the engine you have probably has not had the heads modified yet. There are things that need to be done to engine to make it run well on unleaded gas, first make sure you have stellite valve seats installed when you have the heads off, if you don't get that done, pump gas is just going to destroy the engine, also make sure the valve guides are up to spec, loose valve guides will give you all kinds of grief if they are not right, the valves will shift on the seats and you will have backfires at higher rpms, you may be not be able to exceed 40 mph if they are really bad from the blow back. Also use some good valve guide seals when you reassemble the engine, hopefully your bottom end is okay, but as many years as the car has on it, I am afraid there will be a pretty good ring ridge in the engine, these old engine used really thick stiff iron rings and they were hard on the cylinder walls, new engines use skinny little compression rings and run really lightweight oil because of it, less drag, better mileage, so if you can catch your finger nail on the ring ridge, it needs to be bored and new pistons..I would not go over 040. as FE blocks are little thin on iron, and end up with a block that runs hot, it is a lot of work...if you are not really into restoring it to a numbers correct car you can get a rebuilt crate 390 with warranty for $2,200.00, I just spent $1500 have just the heads rebuilt on my last one, but I wanted those heads....so if you just want to drive the car and it be dependable this is what is probably the best, as this galaxie is not an XL or police interceptor, it could be a nice car but I noticed the quarter panels are going to need some love too, good luck with it, I am glad you like 64 Fords, they were really special...

352-360-390 pushrods on them could be a different length you might have a little bit too long keeping one of the valves open a little bit so after you do your compression test you were probably know make sure the wires aren't crossed make sure there's not a crack in the distributor cap between them to back cylinders

You didn't have to weld those washers on the shift linkage like you did. You can purchase reproduction bushings for it. But I guess it's too late now. As far as the engine goes, don't rush it, take your time. The last thing you want to do is rush it and overlook something and have to tear it down again.

That car is beautiful, just like my buddy's '65 Galaxie when we were in high school..... On the linkage: do NOT use a cotter pin. Use a roll pin! Next, on the other end, that was not for a C-clip, it was a swedge that's designed to keep the washer and arm captured. Put a spot of weld on it right there. EDIT: I now see you discovered the swedge! Good on ya'!

While running, put a dollar bill at the end of the tailpipe. If it sucks the bill to the pipe it likely has a valve issue.

Make sure to check body to frame grounding strap , they are notorious for fail or poor attachment - also timing sounds OFF ! You guys are going to learn so much from these Hard Knocks as you proceed to find and fix them , also get you an extra heavy-duty oil pump shaft-the stock ones twist like a pretzel when the clogged pickup allows bits and pieces of broken/deteriorated valve seals to be sucked into the oil pump gears -it has killed many crank/bearing assemblies on the "Ole Boat Anchor FE's". You need 15 inch steel FORD wheels and "330 spinners " to be badass period correct Grasshopper !

FO's 15426378, but it looks ( 11:20 ) like it's correct. Did this engine sit for a while? The rear two cylinders are lowest, over years maybe condensation managed to drip down and wash through remnant oil enough to roughen up the valve stems. Was timing set with the vacuum advance connected, and is the vacuum advance connected to the proper port on the carb and all the other ports sealed off? EDIT: Was thinking... were 4 and 8 reading low or just 7 and 8? if it's 7-8 then check the wires aren't swapped. And presuming you're talking to the cam using the Ford number system where passenger front is 1 and it runs back to 4, then the driver's bank is front to back 5-8 (and let all hands helping know too if they're GM guys).

No smoke or crankcase blow-by usually means the bottom end is ok. The 352/390 engines are pretty stout. I’d bet you have a cam, lifter and/or pushrod issue. Go through the heads and put a new cam, lifters and pushrods in and you are likely good to go. Rebuild it if you want but I’d bet the short block is good to go. Hard to kill a Ford FE!
