It's not necessarily a different skill-set. When it comes to singing, it always revolves about breath control, mouth closure/shape, vowel manipulation, pitch (yes, it matters for screams, too). If you wanna be at the top of your game, you gotta have decent knowledge about the basics.. This is why Opera singers can truly sing anything, they have mastered those crucial elements.

Being able to sing and scream is quite common among vocalists in the metal core community. BUT with that being said Will is a deathcore vocalist and someone who idolizes people like Dickie Allen from Infant Annihilator and Scumfu*k. And for someone into those genres to be able to sing just shows his versatility.

Don't know if anyone answered this yet, but Alissa Ghite-Gluz is another phenomenal vocalist who can do a huge variety of different vocals, Nergal also has a huge set of what he can perform! Plenty of great vocalists out there in the metal scene, I personally love the variety :)

I think its just that vessel is not the strongest screamer. But its just his emotion. He puts into his vocals just cant be matched. But as a follower of sleep token hard core. Yeah, it's better if you stick to his covers on his youtube channel cuz Lorna Shore is definitely only screaming 😂 but honestly the band is absolutely insane, Will isn't the only beast in there (they're all insane at what they do) so if you can set aside the screaming definitely check this out!

I'm in that same lane. For the heavy growl/scream vocal style to really work for me it needs to be a combination of the singer really enunciating/articulating well and the production not burying or muddying the vocals under the instrumentation. So most death/black metal bands don't resonate with me. Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) and Johan Hegg (Amon Amarth) are two I pretty much enjoy.

Maybe I need to listen to a bit more of both bands. I've never been into the more extreme end of metal (it took me years to get into it, full stop and it was through a guy I was going out with in college that I first started listening to stuff I thought I hated before then) and maybe it's because I can't really understand it, not through ignorance per se, more a view of why would someone want to do that to their throat and vocal cords? But I do find that my tastes expand every few years. Thanks for this reaction Alex, I don't think it's a song I had heard before now. I love Will's clean vocal lines because there's such a depth of emotion to them and they sort of hit me in my solar plexus. I had to turn the volume down a bit when he started ripping it though because it's nearly 1am here and my other half is asleep upstairs. Oops!
