It straight blows my mind when I hear people say they never heard this album. I had this shit on repeat for a straight year; played the PS2 game, watched the shit out of the movie, wore the G-Unit kicks, etc. Not as big of a fan today and my tastes have expanded but the 50 movement was HUGE. To me, there is no greater Hip-Hop album than 50 Cent's 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' the execution on this album is just perfection. From the placement of each track, to the production, to the simple features, to 50 Cent's unique sound and flow, to the album artwork, to the era it was released in, to the insane energy surrounding this album when it was released all the stars aligned perfectly for this album. Ja Rule never recovered from 50 for multiple reasons. From what I remember it was a combination of 50 Cent literally having one of the biggest debuts for a rapper ever, along with Ja Rule making the mistake of involving the entirety of aftermath including Eminem in the beef, along with higher ups in his label facing a federal investigation at the same time. So Ja couldn’t really focus on the need the he really had no chance of winning against the biggest rapper in the world and his entire label. Also considering how big Ja Rule was, 50 basically took his place because of how perfect the time and the place was. Also 50 Cent might be legit insane so there’s that.

Little 50 Cent trivia: U not like me was originally on the GUESS WHO’s BACK mixtape that got him noticed by Eminem. The song on the tape was re-recorded and mastered for the album and put as a bonus along with Life’s on the line which was also an older song (prior to 50 getting shot) that was on his debut with Columbia that never got officially released POWER OF THE DOLLAR. you can notice the difference in his voice. After 50 got shot he was dropped by Columbia(Sony) Gotta do THE MASSACRE next. Lyrically 50 stepped up a few notches, the song writing was on an insane level. It’s a classic within itself BUT most people overlook it even tho it sold damn near the same amount as GRODT. If that album had some of the songs he gave to Game and a few of the songs from the GRODT movie soundtrack, Massacre would be way better than its predecessor. And it would arguably not even be close.

I was 18 when this dropped. I distinctly remember listening to this (on CD - yes I’m that old) with my mates, when we all first started to drive in our clapped out ford fiestas. Soundtrack to my early adult life, along with College Drop Out, Pretty Toney specifically around 2003/04 and then some slightly earlier classics of Marshall Mathers LP, Water for chocolate, 2001, Quality Control, Warriors, Stankonia…….. list is endless for great hip hop
