A lot of credit also goes to nick nurse as well. Lot of coach’s wouldn’t show this much trust in a rookie to run all 5 positions. But nick nurse is crazy, lovable, genius coach. I won’t be surprised if he ever runs Freddy at centre and raps go up !

Evan Mobley was my ROTY, until the all-star break. Before that, him and Scottie were very close for me. But, I think Scottie truly somehow got better after that break. Yes, he's not the "guy" like Cade yet, in fact he's the fourth option on his team. However, even in such a limited role, Scottie manages to impact the game at a crazy rate. You can tell, when he's off the court, the Raptors are not as good. Scottie needs to work on his defence tho. However, it's impressive to me that he can score 15-19 points a night, considering he is hardly ever the first or second option. Just such an efficient player. Also, shout out to Cade, has really impressed me lately.

Based on statistics Scottie: PPG: 15.4 - REB: 7.5 - AST: 3.6 - STL: 1.1 - BLK: 0.8 Evan: PPG: 14.9 - REB: 8.3 - AST: 2.5 - STL: 0.8 - BLK: 1.6 I think theyre so damn close in every statistic. Accounting for the fact that Scottie is a wing and Mobley is a big accounts for the differences in steals, blocks, rebounds and assists, but the amazing thing is both only have marginal differences. Id give the edge to Scottie because of the better points, three point %, and just marginally lower shooting %. My great sign of a rookie wing is shooting efficiently from the get go. Its what differentiates guys like Brandon Jennings, Tyreke Evans from guys like Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum. It shows they have a high shot selection IQ, know how to get good shots and arent volume scorors. They can be effective from the get go without having to score a bunch. Cade is shooting 40% from the field this year. Thats fine for a game, or even a week. But over the course of a season and career those misses add up, they start to make up a big difference. A guy like Scottie who averages 15 on 50% for a season vs. a guy who averaged 18-20 on 40% is more efficient and a better more effective basketball player than the higher scoring/less efficient guy. Win Shares Scottie: 6.4 Evan: 5.0 Win shares are so important in a young players career. Players on good/playoff teams who are putting up good stats and being a cohesive member of the unit on the court is so valuable. For comparison, Donovan Mitchells win share this year was 7.1....just 7 points above a Scottie Barnes. Win shares show us how important a player is on a specific team, how much they contribute to wins. Guys I mentioned previously like Jennings and even Cade this year have negative win shares. They put up empty stats on bad teams and cause more harm than good because of their inefficiency, turnovers or other bad decisions. Definitely not a 100% product of the player just being bad, but this is an individual award so I look at it accordingly. These win shares also mean a lot considering these two teams are both playoff teams. Both rookies playing important roles on competitive teams is so cool and fun to see but it also should play a role in whether they deserve it over Cade. Cade is on a bad team. Not his fault, but as mentioned before he is a factor. Scottie and Evan both contribute to wins in a big way. Toronto is 2.5 games ahead of Cleveland for the 6th spot while Cleveland and Evan were the early favourites with their strong start have fallen to 7th with a record of W:43 - L36. Id give this part of the analysis again to Scottie. Eye Test As much as it shouldnt matter as much when giving out individual awards based on ever changing reasons, I think the eye test for an award like MVP or ROY shouldnt matter as much. Storylines and the eye test should play a role and they do mess with our emotions regarding a award so I dont blame voters to take it into consideration, but there are times where it has played a bigger role than the statistics and records. Consistency should be better for these awards. Regardless, I think there are a few big men in the NBAs recent history that have come onto the scene and looked as comfortable as Evan. Hes an amazing rim protector, solid rebounder, efficient scoror and though his percentages arent ideal, having a big man that can if he wanted to, shoot 25% from three is really cool to have. Hes only going to get better but as of now, Id give him the edge in this category. Scottie looks like a veteran already. You know hes going to be at minimum a all-star caliber player but the sky is the limit. I havnt seen a better iteration of Kawhi Leanard since well....Kawhi Leonard. And even he took longer to come into his own than Scottie has. He has the drive, heart and skill to thrive and what better a situation and organization than Toronto. He looks so comfortable on the court, can guard 1-4 and some 5s, can score efficiently and contributes to wins. He also seems like genuinely a nice guy and I think we all cant wait to see what he does in the future. The only reason Im giving the nod in this category to Evan is because Evan has come in and filled a desperate need for Cleveland and also looks like hes been there for years. The chemistry hes built with DG and the other guys, the comfort he has in defending the post and relying on him as that teams anchor already is awesome. Having Jarrett Allen next to you helps a lot but the times when Mobleys been left on an Island and got the save shows hes capable of that role full time. Im sure hes learned and will continue to learn a lot from Allen but his fit and the results of that fit are my main reason. ROY: Scottie I like Scottie way too much not to give it to him. His stats back up the claim, win shares, along with all the other analytics prove hes more important to what the Raptors have done this year and hes done it all looking calm, collected and like he belongs. Hes a diamond under pressure and hes coming along so well. I think the marginally better statistics, along with the better record and an eye test that leaves him ever so behind Mobley gives him the win for me. Theyre both so close to me and Cade never really was considered. I think rewarding rookies that play this well, contribute to wins and play effective basketball are more important that just the statistics or name value of giving the #1 pick the award. If wins matter in MVP, they should matter in ROY (albeit to a lesser degree due to them being rookies and often on worse teams) but it should still matter! I wouldnt say this if Cade was averaging 20 - 6 - 6 on 45% shooting 35% from three but the Pistons were still bad. Yes my comparison isnt far from his actual stats, but its also not far from Mobley and Scottie either! And thats my point, Scottie and Mobley put up comparitive stats on SIGNIFICANTLY better teams and played a huge part in doing so. Those teams wouldnt be in the positions they are without them. Detriot would be just a bit worse without Cade at this point. Im sure this argument would be a lot different if we swapped Cade and Scottie teams. Reality though isnt the case. We cant go back and change things no matter how much we want. Reality is Scottie wins ROY for me.

As a raptors fan I definitely have a bias, but to me Scottie deserves Roty. Throughout the season He has filled and excelled in almost every single role for our team offensively and defensively and is a huge reason we've been able to keep getting wins with several of our starters struggling with injuries this season. I have to say though if someone else wins it I wouldn't be too mad as Cade and Evan along with the majority of the other rookies In this class have also been amazing.

First half of the season, I thought Mobley was winning it. The way he could defend every position on the court and wouldn't back down from a challenge. I'll take it down to 3 awards, The best scorer goes to Cade: the way he can get buckets when his team needs him too. The best defender is by a mile Evan Mobley, his ability to switch onto any position and guard it well. I was really impressed by his help defensive IQ, that showed heaps of potential. But my ROTY is Scottie Barnes. One possession he will drive past his defender for a dunk and the next he will splash a pullup three. Then he will find the open man. And he also has a great defensive skillset with the IQ to know when to steal the ball and when to block the shot. Versatility is what made Scottie Barnes my rookie of the year.

I think everyone agrees that cade is/will be the best player in the class. That being said, best rookie doesn't mean rookie of the year. Cade's numbers are great, but considering Scottie is the 4/5th option and still has this much impact and puts up these stats (never mind as a rookie!!) is beyond impressive. I saw an interesting stat on Twitter that said out of all rookies ever averaging 15+ppg, he has the lowest usage % of all, speaks for itself imo. Scottie has been the most consistent rookie for sure, excelling in any role Nurse played him in. On top of the fact he's doing all this on an almost 5th seed that was projected to be a lottery team, I think he's pretty easily the ROTY. Cade fs the best player in the class tho.

Regardless of who wins the ROTY Cade Cunningham is BY FAR the best player out of this draft, he has the highest ceiling, he will the face of the Pistons for years to come and I think will actually turn the Pistons franchise into one of the best on the league in a couple years, Mobley and Barnes are amazing players and will continue to be, but they won’t have anywhere near the effect on the league than Cade will because they will more than likely always be third or maybe second options whereas Cade is now the face of the Pistons bright future of young, developing talent where he will be there first option and their leader, an example of this is the Rising Stars game, Cade ran his team which had Mobley and sophomore veterans but still Cade won MVP and was the reason why that team won because he is more than a scorer, he has no weakness besides a high turnover rate and he fouls to much which is normal for rookies This is just my opinion and I respect other’s opinions, this is just my thought process as a man who watches a lot basketball 😂

Wasn’t easily Scottie especially considering he shouldn’t win it to begin with. The conversation starts and ends with Cade period. He is a completely different player from Barnes and Mobley. They played as solid role players on playoff caliber teams whereas Cade was the leader of the team as a 20 year old. Regardless of how good the pistons roster itself was he’d be doing that on a better team too there is no doubt in my mind. ROY is the player who brought the most to their team and the difference of having them rather than not. You take Mobley and Barnes off their teams they’re easily still in the same ball park they were already at

@SBGaming3

To me, it came down to Mobley and Scottie. I went Scottie because he is so versatile. He can play 1-5 and guard 1-5. Mobley is really switchable defensively, but there is a difference between being able to switch for a few possessions and hold your own vs. being able to matchup with pretty much anybody from the tip to the final buzzer. Mobley is a better defender in his role, but I think the defensive side of the ball is pretty close between the two because Scottie can fill the gap that you have in a certain matchup. Offensively, I lean slightly to Barnes. He is a better playmaker (which he should be being as Mobley is a C/PF) who averages more assists and less turnovers than Mobley. He is a better shooter (again, as he should be against a center) even if neither are very good yet. He also averages more offensive rebounds, and only averages 0.8 less total rebounds per game than Mobley does. The thing that makes the difference to me is that I like a plug and play player that can go out and do whatever I need him to vs a guy who fits a certain role well. I actually kinda expect Mobley to end up winning it, which I will feel happy about as well. Both have been AMAZING this season and are extremely deserving.

imo mobley is a much better defender simply because the nature of his role as a rim protector is the most valuable plus he can switch onto the perimeter so hes essentially a rim protector that cant be exploited which is the most valuable archetype(JJJ,giannis,AD, etc) for a defensive player. scottie is definitely more versatile on defense but evan's overall impact is much bigger

@@jonathanfranco-b7p The Raptors are a better defense when Scottie is the best defender on the team than when Mobley is the best Cavs defender in a game. And that is with the Raptors not having a rim protector. 6 of the top-10 defenses in the NBA have a perimeter defender as their defensive leader. The idea that perimeter defense simply isn’t nearly as important as rim protection is ludicrous at this point. We see it every year in the playoffs, the two best defenders in last year’s Finals were both perimeter defenders (Holiday and Bridges). Perimeter defenders continue to get brushed aside because the media views interior defense as far superior when that simply isn’t true. The Utah Jazz are not a top-10 defense despite having one of the greatest rim protectors of all time, the Spurs are a below average defense despite having one of the best post defenders in the league. The Toronto Raptors are one of the best defenses in the league despite not having any rim protection. Chris Boucher is their only shot-blocker and he averages less than a block a game. Obviously interior defense is extremely important to have, but let’s not act like it is way more important than perimeter defense. Also note that Barnes has spent about the same amount of time matched up with centers as Mobley, and the Raptors performed at the same level in those minutes as the Cavs have when Mobley is matched up with a center.

@@SBGaming3 i guess we just have to agree to disagree. the past two championship teams were both defensive juggernauts with the best defensive players being versatile rim protectors. it is hard to evaluate defense but the foundation of almost every good defense is a good rim protector. rim protection protects the most valuable spot on the court and is the key for a consistent defense

I'm really happy my Raptors have such a great young player but sitting back and looking at this entire rookie class I can't believe how amazing it already looks. It looks like one of those once in 10 years type of draft classes. I could see Cade averaging 25+/7+/7+ in a few years. I could see Evan Mobley putting up 25+/10+ with 2+ blocks with great defense and some 3PT shooting. I can see Scottie doing incredible things like 20+/9+/6+ with 3 combined steals + blocks while guarding all five positions. I can see Green leading the league in scoring in a few years, even winning multiple scoring awards is a real possibility with his scoring prowess. It's truly incredible what kind of potential these top guys have and as a fan of the game I'm excited to see how their careers develop. I think it's criminal that Scottie was last on your twitter poll but a lot of the USA fans don't get to watch many Raptors games and they dislike and discredit us regardless of the situation so it's all good.

His games played, minutes per game played and his overall contribution on both sides of the ball tell you that. Plus he is on the best team of these three dudes and in my mind theoretically has the most competition within the team "fighting" his teammates for the starter spot.Even more when you think about those teammates,as champions,All Star selections "demand" a couple shots more taken- a bigger role in every NBA matchup. This is my case for the most impactful Rookie. Here is why Cade Cunningham is my ROTY, Cade came into this season on a team that was said to win maybe 15 games and the only goal was to get another high lottery pick and while they did do that Cade made this season so much more for the Pistons. Mobile and Barnes had a good foundation and older players to mentor them to be great from the start, the guy with the most NBA experience on the Pistons was Kelly Olynyk someone who knows nothing about being a facilitating point guard in the NBA. Cade had no one on his team to teach him what to do with the ball at the pace of the game, he had to figure it all out on his own and he did a damn good job of it. Cade can run an offense better then most guards in the league and his scoring goes right along with that. While his team success isn’t with the other two his individual achievements push him over the edge for me.

Your argument is so contingent upon narrative though. Yes, most of what you say is true but ultimately the award is given to the player who's had the best, most consistent, and most impactful season. From the opener to today Scottie has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to not just impact games but win them. I understand the NBA is plagued by recency bias and that flashy players tend to take precedent over the grit and grind guys...but if you take the time to dive into the stats of Scottie Barnes opposed to crediting his success to his scenario it's hard to dispute him as the best rookie this season. Cade will be a face of the league at some point in his career no doubt, but at this moment Scottie has a better case.

Cade has a nice impact and def is gonna be a star in the future, but most defenses dont even take his team seriously bc their trash, and cade hasn't even been able to capitalize on those opportunities to shoot efficently and be an efficent playmaker.

Even with better teammates on paper, I find the fact that Giannis still being easily the best player on his team while getting his stats in the least amount of minutes compared to other candidates (and easily playing the best defense by a mile) a lot more impressive than Jokic filling up the stat sheet because his team sucks. I get that Jokic is also having a historic offensive season while carrying his team to the 6th seed, but Giannis isn't that far behind offensively while being at the top of his conference. I don't feel comfortable giving a back-to-back MVP to someone on a team that clearly isn't a finals contender this season too, especially when another candidate just came off a historic finals run and is looking to 2peat.

That may be true Cade's path to ROTY is harder. Cade get double team'd etc. However, I can only go by what's in front of me statistically and all the evidence points to Scottie. My quick breakdown, I just think it's dope how we literally have a big, forward, and guard in the running for ROTY it really comes down to your philosophy on the game and what position you perceive to be most valuable because all these guys have outplayed their expectations. Do you like the big stalwart who holds down both ends of the floor, the shifty glue guy who can get a bucket on his own or in the system while playing great D and hitting the boards, or do you like the guard who is the teams leader and offensive maestro. Either way I gotta rock with my guy Scottie, gonna be some great rivalries in the east for years to come

I’m prolly biased sure cuz I’m a detroit fan, and if Scottie wins he fs deserves it ofc, but Cade is better and has a better case, Cade stats are better, he’s doing things as a rookie that only players like MJ, bron and luka have done(I forget what but I’m it was true) he has a huge impact on the pistons with him on the court they look like an actual nba without him the pistons are actually garbage, he’s the number 1 option on the team so sure that’s a reason he scores more but it also means he’s being guarded by the best defenders often times i see him triple teamed and still making the basket, he’s a great passer and if he had better teammates would be averaging 10 assists a game, and his defense is great, JUST BECAUSE A TEAM HAS A WORSE RECORD MEANS NOTHING, it’s an individual award...I’m done now lmao😭

I think for the good part of the early season Chris Duarte was the most "NBA ready" guy, I felt. Basically he felt like Dominican Klay Thompson, being a spot up shooter that can defend (especially be a menace in the lanes). Its unfortunate how injured he's gotten lately and it worries me that because he is so old for a rookie that the Pacers won't have enough incentive to keep developing him but I really do think he can be a really important piece to a future playoff bound Pacers team.
