Scottie makes so many passes where he calls out the next pass to the recipient of his pass leading to a hockey assist that doesn't show up in the box score. He is the only player since Magic to play all 5 positions in his rookie season. This man will do whatever the team needs. Scottie has a sneaky good offensive game too and I am pretty confident if he was asked to score like Cade or Green, he would have ran away with the ROY already. This whole draft class is something special.

There's two things that really stand out to me about Scottie Barnes. One, he absolutely does not look like a rookie when you watch him play, his bball IQ is so high that you always think he's a veteran player just by basing off of his play. And two, his intensity and attittude are absolutely top notch, he has all the groundwork to be an amazing leader for a team and one of the best locker room guys you could ever have.

ESPN no longer does this sort of thing - none of the big sports media companies do. They learned that it is easier to hit a lower bar and engage the casuals with drama and debate. They play to the lowest common denominator to gain the masses, who frankly don't do alot of "thinking". And it isn't just about sports. Look at "news" coverage over the last 10 years.

What's crazy is he was seen as a surprise pick. Even at the draft lottery it was all about securing a top for pick for either Cade, green, Mobley or Suggs. I think even kuminga was seen as the no Brainer number 5 after the "drop off" of the top 4... yet Masai did what Masai does and picked Scottie Barnes 4th and ends up with a franchise talent lol
@michaelahurt
@michaelahurt 2 жыл бұрын
I'm really not sure why Suggs was getting grouped as top 4. I though it was pretty clearly Cade > Mobley > Green and then a clear drop to the Suggs, Barnes, Kuminga and Wagner all in the next tier. I think what happened was we all just liked the idea of Suggs directly replacing Lowry and he got mocked there over and over starting in April and then he just got grouped as "top 4" even though it was a top 3 (or even top 2.) Although I remember Barnes settling in as the pretty clear #5 in all the major mock drafts as spring turned into summer.

AFAIK Cade was seen as the surefire pick. His floor is getting to all-nba by the time he matures. After him its pure potential with a floor for being an nba-starter. Man, you don't really know how much I've been waiting for this! As a Scottie fan it's been tough hearing so little of him when compared to Cade or Mobley (understandably so, since they are really hyped 1st and 3rd picks), but I knew you would make something about him eventually. I am really glad that I am not the only one seeing massive star potential, and I'm even higher on his shooting than you, since I think someone with so much touch around the basket and such a polished footwork will at least develop some kind of mid-range finesse. I'm only really concerned about his free throw rates, since he is getting almost no attempts for a guy that generates so much of his scoring at the cup. It is a direct consequece of his mastery finding little blind spots instead of banging hard against the defender, but I think it could limit his efficiency a bit when scaling his role on offense. Great video, Ben! Thanks for everything you've been giving us this year.

If you look at his shooting percentages in College and then compare it to the league, there's a dramatic improvement without even factoring in the competition difference. 2) The Raptors have developed so many players that before entering the league were considered non-shooter and turned them into adequate shooters like Siakam, Anunoby, Powell, etc.

Here's Scottie VS Cade: Scottie Win Shares: +6.4 Cade Win Shares: - 0.2 (that's right. NEGATIVE win shares find a rookie in NBA HISTORY who became all-nba after posting less than 1 win share as a rookie.) Scottie PER: 16.4 CADE PER: 13.3 Scottie Usage: 19.1% Cade Usage: 27.4% (this is close to LeBron level opportunities as a rookie) Scottie True Shooting%- 55.1% Cade True Shooting% - 50.6% Scottie fun facts: • First rookie since Shaquille O'Neal in 1993 with 25 points, 15 rebounds and 5 steals. • First rookie since Derrick Rose in 2008 to start a game 10/10 from the field. • First rookie EVER to do 25/15/5 on above 85% shooting. Here are Scottie's numbers in the 19 games he's matched up against recent All-Stars and MVP candidates head to head (Jokic, Giannis, Doncic, DeRozan, Tatum, LeBron, Butler, Durant, Sabonis) 18.3PPG, 8.4RPG, 3.74APG, 55 FG% Here are Scottie's numbers against the two teams most people had as title favourites coming into the season, the Nets and the Lakers: 21.5ppg, 11.83rpg, 4.7apg, 63.5 FG% And here are his numbers in 48 games NOT facing those players head to head: 14.1ppg, 7.25rpg, 3.37apg, 46 FG% He puts his big numbers up against good teams. He saves his 6 point games for Sacramento.

Masai, Bobby and the whole scouting team i think were putting a lot of stock in IQ and the type of frame that could play and guard every position to try and attain a positionless game and hit the jackpot with Scottie. He's still growing but as a Raps fan i think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who thought his numbers would be this high and he'd be pushing for rookie of the year. Even if he doesn't win it they can be confident that they picked the best player available in that draft

It took me awhile to see but when Ujiri said he was excited about drafting Barnes I realized what he meant. He really is a 'cheat code' at times because in most situations he reads his team's offense the moment he decides on a drive. That's value you cannot generate so easily on even NBA players, and Ujiri saw this as a great opportunity to see how far Barnes can take it on a team whose bench isn't exactly the best offensive producer. The media loves to see a guy who can defend most positions on the court. But very rarely can you classify a player who can play all five positions effectively. He already hustles on D, and his build will serve well enough for him in the next few years or so. I think his progress moving forward is expanding his offensive efficiency, hoping to pick up midrange from Siakam and threes from FVV and OG. As a Raptors fans, I am thrilled.

Well done. Great commentary and editing. I think of Kawhi, who was not renowned for his shooting when he first hit the league. The Raptors have some of the best development coaching in the league and just like Freddy and Pascal those metrics will only improve over time.

@@toogud7918 you worth even more when you become a key player in a winning team, not only mobley could score but he also defends really well like how he cleverly place himself in double team and block shots and thats why he become key role in cavs defense especially seeing them actually winning with those defense means he contribute really well. scotty also provide not only as a playmaker but also as a defender that steal ball and how raptors now get into playoffs shows how much it affects their play.

Great video like that you highlighted both strengths and weaknesses and gave unbiased opinions on his game, only thing I would say is regarding his shooting, your analysis would be accurate for the first maybe 2-3 months of the season but he's actually shown a significant improvement and confidence in his mid range and 3 ball and while he still not a "shooter" the quick development to no shot at all when the season started to a respectable cherry on top to his offense in just a few months gives me a lot of optimism especially in raptors development system that he will be a consistent outside threat and maybe even an elite shooter in the future

from January - now hes shooting 27% from 3 and 30% from 15-24 feet At lower volume at the beginning of the season (October-January) he was 37% from 3 and about 48% 15-24 feet I haven't watched too many raptors games so maybe the eye test says hes gotten better. Both are important tho

For this year's rookie, I think we really should evaluate based on the progression of their rookie season. A lot of the rookies changed how they looked from the first half like Cade and Jalen green. Mobley and Barnes also matured quite a lot since ASW. This year's draft has quite a high learning ability and eagerness that I don't see a lot in past.

He seems to me like a more offensive dray from these highlights. Being able to take advantage of his versatility in defense and make the right decisions to either score or pass in offense. Wouls really be vauable for the raptors if they're able to pair him with a great pick and roll offensive guard in the future.

I think a lot of Dray’s agility is anticipation. He knows what’s going to happen so he moves with purpose- very high basketball IQ. Scottie is young and less controlled, but he’s an incredible physical specimen. I agree that Scottie has the potential to be a better Draymond. He’s already very smart, but has a long ways to go to catch up to Dray’s big brain.
