I Finally RETURNED to Ukraine (shocked at what I saw…) 🇺🇦

I’ve been dreaming about this trip for the past several months. I say “dreaming,” because I didn’t actually believe it would become reality. I couldn’t fathom returning to a country that was at war, but here I was boarding a train that would first take him to Chełm, a city in eastern Poland, near the Ukrainian border.
From there, I would transfer over to a Ukrainian night train on which I would ride into the night, crossing into Ukrainian territory, a country where anything can happen…

Sorry, I can't buy this propaganda. Ukraine is only one country in the World which building it's national identity on ethinc cleansing and genocide. Also only one country with "heroes" like Stephan Bandera or Roman Shukhevych or collaborators of SS Galizien. Volhynia ethinc cleansing or Odessa massacre are "proud and important" parts of ukrainian "identity". I'm Polish myself but if you think that this is propaganda then do some basic homework and Ukraine has to take responsibility for their barbaric crimes

@@Frem_Kra think about people, not about countries, okay? It doesn't matter what Ukraine "did" in the past (in fact, responsinility for many things belongs to individuals, not to countries, nations or millions of people who live years after particular event). People from Ukraine don't deserve this war, as many people don't deserve it anywhere. But you are blind and your mind can't work in the other way and you can't see it. What is more, you, me and everyone are to small to pass judgement on normal people who just want to live in peace.

I will definitely visit one day when the war is over. However Odessa is probably gonna be first on my list. Kiev might seem the same as before (population wise) but people tend to forget that besides migration to foreign countries there's also been a massive migration within Ukraine. Many of people we see here might have come from the areas heavily hit by war. Greetings from western Poland James.

@@biglance I don't think he will have trouble, Lance. The Russian language is spoken by a majority of people in Ukraine. This has historical reasons and Ukrainian was suppressed for a long, long time too. Other than what Russian propaganda tells, it wasn't a problem if one spoke Russian back then and it isn't a problem today. But Ukrainian gets a revival, many "native" Ukrainians and "Russians" learn Ukrainian language. This out if shame and because of unity. But it's still not a problem if one speaks Russian. The demand to speak Ukrainian in offices and schools, and I could be wrong here, takes place in 2030. That's a normal approach by the government to support the countries roots and the Ukrainian language just like in the Baltic States.

Hey man, I am of Polish descent, and I understand your misgivings. At this point, we need to give them some breathing space! I have no doubt that in a year or two Bandera will be replaced with the true heroes, both military & civilians, of the current war. Look at the bigger picture: they are fighting & dying for Ukraine and indirectly also for Poland. If Russians were standing today on the Polish eastern border, your country's problems would have become existential (again) and with the "friends" like Germany or France, PL would have been in a truly precarious position. Let's give them a few years to get their national story straight.

🙄 He's not a tourist. He used to live there and left when the invasion started. He's coming back to visit and making a video about how the city had changed since he had to leave. Watch the video or don't, but your self-righteous whinging isn't going to change anything.

The trolleys are colorful and give a little old world ambience. San Francisco prides it's self for their trams, trolleys and cable cars. My friend was a brakeman on the cable cars and it is one of the most prestigious positions in the whole public transportation system. I was born in the city in 1953 and we rode the cable to the baby sitters every morning and evening. One of my most fondest memories of the City By The Bay.

Ukraine is still in our family prayers over here in the Philippines. I am happy that there is some semblance of "normalcy". We hope that things get turned around and that Ukraine gets back what was taken. Nothing more, nothing else. I have always wanted to visit, possibly even work there (if there was work). Take care and stay safe.

I was there just last summer in Podil. You walked by a coffee shop right at top of the hill I stopped at, I also went inside the church. It was so beautiful and the view of Podil from the outside of the church is amazing. I like the trams. I think they are cool. Lucky that my wife is Ukrainian so I have my personal translator and guide. I miss Ukraine hopefully will relocate there to help with reconstruction in future.

Because no one in Kiev cares about hundreds/ thousands of ukronazi die every day. People of "ukraine" did not care about killing people in Donbass for 8 years, now they don't care about huge military losses by nazi kiev regime.

@@RogersMgmtGroup How do you know that he is an american? It's doesn't mean much anyway, because he is a native ukrainian. Russians do not bomb civilians, but ukronazi do. Ukronazi use civilians as human shield, they place their military stuff by people houses, in schools, by hospitals. He and all pro- west were fine when ukraine bombed Donbass for 8 years, killed 14K of civilians including many kids. What about nazi/ fascist parades in Kiev every year?

Well I'm happy that Russia didn't "congratulate" Kiev on their independence Day as @Anna from Ukraine puts it. I don't know about the rest of the country - But still I'm glad you are ostensibly back in Poland. I saw a cool balcony the other day and I thought of you. (It was covered with hardware cloth on the outside so no children or pets could fall off. It didn't look crappy. There were also plants.)

I have been to protests in St Petersburg and broadcasts from Moscow and people analyzing the situation in Russia and Anna from Ukraine debunking Soviet myths (Intourist! I hadn't heard of that in years, decades.) but I miss Poland and I miss you guys more. I hope we will see you again sometime soon. I was exploring Instagram and learning weather related terms in Polish, probably for the third time but perhaps someday I will know how to say snowblower! (I think it's more likely that I will be able to understand a sentence than to make one myself. But these days I've been hearing a lot of Russian, which wasn't the direction I planned on going) When the little Facebook live chime went off and I found myself on Nevsky Prospekt, with Niki, watching people march by chanting No to war! The second most fascinating thing about that was that there were 18,000 people there. It's been a long time since I've seen text fly by that quickly. Oh and there was this person whose face we never saw who slapped him in the face twice and told him to speak Russian. I had turned away to look at something at that moment and could only hear someone saying Po Russky (I don't know how to spell in Russian). If I had had my wits about me, and I wasn't even the one being assaulted, I would have caught on that he was being told to speak Russian. I do have a book Mówic po Polsku, So I get the idea. But it was rather sudden. And it was explained before I had time to think. Things are happening and I am glad that you are somewhere more safe. And I hope it remains so. And I would love to see any part of it - even the trams again. Even the supermarket. That one in the mall looks like it's enormous, but it's been a long time since I looked there. I only wander into Poland briefly with Ninka or Vigo's dad. You might like him. He's Dominican and his wife is Polish and they are raising a child who speaks three languages. I think he is in Warsaw. I know he had a get together of a whole bunch of people from his KZbin and his Facebook group maybe last month. Not sure how many, 25 or 30. I believe many languages were spoken there. And also I checked, his family was not affected by Fiona. Right now in Florida we are concerned about the next one. It doesn't have a name yet. It's direction does not look good. Do come back, if you have time. The nicely assembled stories are interesting but, it's just as interesting when you walk down the street. And every time I see a cat cafe, I think of you guys. I saw one in St Petersburg the day before the protests. Not the St Petersburg here... I can't go in anyway, I'm really allergic. But it was nice to look. Summer must be over there, or nearly so.
