Honestly when sony was at their best despite the massively expensive price point for the ps3. Sony allowing people to use these devices as machines that arent just gaming consoles is the entire reason I got into coding, hacking, and developing things.

Printing exists because the PS3 was a multi-media machine. So you could print your photos and screenshots from your console. BTW the printing would have worked way better if you selected the proper paper size you had and used photo paper.

You gotta remember, Sony was very ambitious with the PS3, where the pS4 and ps5 are really just games machines. Sony wanted the PS3 to be the center of your living room, a PC, and a games machine. The console had a web browser, keyboard and mouse support, as well as the ability to install linux.

I used my PS3 Slim as my computer for 2 months while I waited for my PC to be repaired. I went online with my PS3 and paid my bills just like my PC. The PS3 definitely had the same basic features as the PC. I never thought about using a printer. I didn't even know I could.

I once got music to my smartphone with my PS3. I ripped a CD to the PS3 hard drive, copied those MP3s to a USB drive, and then with a dongle I plugged the USB drive into my Android phone and copied them from there. 🎉😂

Fun story. This feature saved my ass in high school. I wrote a paper for my senior year English class. I didn’t want to pay to print at my library so I went home where my mom had a printer. I got home and learned that my little brother had pushed the family computer off the table and broke it. I was able to connect my flash drive to my ps3 and print my essay from there. God I love my PS3.

I actually used this feature A LOT to print off walk-throughs for RPG's & combo/move lists for fighting games. My mom would have a mini heart attack every time I moved the printer.

A feature I loved was the screen saver for the audio tracks. They are mesmerizing. I especially loved the planet Earth one and I would just leave it playing in the background when people were over even with the audio muted.

The paper you have is A4, so I think you can print the entire image without problems if you choose the A4 setting from the printing options on the PlayStation instead of Large (L) or any other option. Because it will frame the image at the appropriate size for the page :)

They're American so I doubt it's A4. Likely "Letter" (the top setting). Also turn off the gloss finish option, and select "borderless" and you should get a full sized print.

Trouble is his pics are so low res they'd look horrendous blown up to full A4 size. The printing feature was next to useless and helped push the price of the ps3 to the famous "if you can't afford it get another job" level of insult by the Sony exec.

the PS3 OS is my absolute favourite console OS. It's unmatched functionality and customisability, the only actual gripe I have is it's support for downloads is incredibly poor, especially background downloads that were an afterthought just glommed on.

i actually found it crazy when i found out it took them a couple years to add the ability to do background downloading. I always hated how it would always pause the background download if you did basically anything else on the console

@@DoctorUber The console had only 256mb of system memory ram, even the xmb struggled to run, while a game was running, and infact it was added later with the trophies. Voice chat also never arrived because the console had no ram left available to do anything.

Yeah, back in the day me and my friends used to print out Metal Gear Solid 4 pictures that we would take in the game. I really wish each PlayStation released with a newer version of the previous system OS instead of starting over each time. Edit: I'm talking in terms of features not the UI and presentation

But they needed to change because ps3 menu became laggy and slow to load the ps store and movie store at the time was both separate and basically an app then ps4 little better, ps5 just perfect I know its probably not what your talking about lol but took them few years to add themes to ps4 and even tho ps5 doesn't need them would be welcomed even as a option turn themes on or off but the MSG4 I did the same was a great game hopefully we get a ps5 version probably be weird as it basically made fun of xbox 360 without saying it with 3 discs and playstation 3 having blu-ray

@@zaidabraham7310fr the ps5 menu is more harder on the console anyway. A ps3 menu on a ps5 will take less space and run it 10x better then a ps3. Even through streaming you can try old ps3 games and they feel good

This is for people who used their ps3 like a pc at the time. It did have a web browser afterall etc. There was also picture editing like apps that aren't available anymore that would use it if I recall.

I remember seeing a prototype PS3 back in the early to mid 2000's on a trip to Japan. The original plan, even up to that late date, was to have an home automation center in a black Sony box, that could do just about anything. The PS3 was going to be your media center that you used for movies, music, pictures, and other features, such as a cable box. In the end, it was probably too advanced for it's time, and fell into the hatred that still scared it to this day. Still, a neat feature, if even then it was nearly useless.

Yeah I left a reply that back in school when I didnt have a PC, I used my PS3 for everything, not just games. I used the web browser to do research and watch KZbin videos, I used it to download pictures and music, used online word processors to write papers and format them for printing, then I used the printer to turn them in. When I wanted to watch a movie I would rent a DVD or Blu-Ray and just watch it on my PS3. For $600 bucks back then, it gave you a lot. Truly ahead of it's time.

Wasn't too advanced but simply cost way too much for it's real target audience. Also took too long to implement features already featured on the Xbox. IMO PS3 is the reason we even have a Xbox one/series x. PS2 sold so insanely well that if PS3 was just a gaming console with killer exclusives at launch the 360 would've flopped harder than the dreamcast. But people wanted next Gen and didn't want to wait a year to get it, so then Xbox was officially implemented in the console race.

I just got a 60 gig backwards compatible fully rebuilt inside, custom firmware loaded with games. It is truly the Cadillac of video game consoles it really does everything! Playing anything on a BCPS 30g Just Hits different than playing on a slim. You feel like you're playing a luxurious piece of tech.

I had tried every feature that console had and i had the rare fully backwards 60gb fat, i even ran the multi audio out and would run hdmi audio, digital out, analog, and anything else it could output and just run an absurd amount of speakers. 😂 Your collection is beautiful btw!

It seems like it defaulted to the wrong paper size, the standard size in the US is 8.5” x 11” so that’s why some of the prints were cut off. I’d like to see a follow up to this where you take some screenshots in one of the few PS3 games that supported it, then print those out on high quality photo paper.

It didn't default to the wrong paper size at all. Its set to the NORMAL paper size the whole world uses and its Americans that default to the WRONG (I'm making a joke here )measuring system coz they have to be different than the rest of the world lol

I remember this feature and dabbled with it a few times printing off photos i made in GT5 which i saved to the OS. I also remember GT4 on PS2 had built-in printer functions too but i think it may have been limited to specific printers as i only remember Epsom printers being advertised for it.

Yeah, Printer was always available from the main XMB so it wasn't locked to Linux/OtherOS in the first place. Not much hacking you can do with printing abilities so no real reason to remove it.

Sony wanted to make the ps3 more than just a console because the Blu-ray player at the time was it's big selling point just like the ps2 was for being a DVD player but since the PS3 was much more expensive they added all kinds of things to make it more like a multimedia thing. The original Xbox already allowed players to play custom music during gameplay in certain games like project Gotham racing. So i think this was mostly a competition sorta thing.

Being able to play custom music was a GODSEND for Sonic Unleashed. I would play extended 30 minute music for the werehog level I was in to keep from hearing the awful repetitive battle theme.

Well, Epson printer that has been bought in 2021 is recognizable by PS3 over Wi-fi and it is a new model, so I think some new printers are recognizable by PS3. Crazy stuff

Just a heads up, but the pictures were cutoff because you weren't selecting the correct paper size or type. You need to select "Letter 8.5x11" when using standard copy paper. You were using the setting for Large Photo Glossy Paper. Great video! Love seeing this stuff.

You know, it might be funny, but it's true: The PS3 was packed with a lot of features! For me personally, it is still my favorite console. I've been gaming since the ATARI (damn i'm getting old!) But seriously, when the PS1 came out, it was so cool, having a disc based console, with all these cool games, and even then, the interface was great as well as it played just audio cd's and showed some cool video (not sure how to say it in English) but it looked nice with all the colors and lines etc... basically like a screensaver or something when your pc is going to sleepmode. Anyway, great video, but i hope you didn't pay too much, because printing is something very different in the gaming space. 😅 But cool feature for sure, specially at that time period i guess. Lol
