this movie is actually based off the directors own life! he is korean, his parents immigrated to america before he was born. the grandma in the movie saying "marry fire" was actually what his grandma said to him before she died, marry korean, but he ended up marrying a white woman. this movie is insanely popular with korean women.

It's really unfair the lack of attention this movie has. It's not exactly the epic masterpiece Pixar is well known for, but it's definitely not as bad as some people lead you to believe. I'm not a fan of romance anymore, but even that I enjoyed. How it progressed. And of course, can't forget the deep, family angle. So much we do for the people we love, that have done so much for us and expect something from us that we completely put aside our own happiness, to the point where we even stop being ourselves. Pretty sure everyone goes through that at some point in life, and it was truly rewarding to see how Ember cope with that and how it took Wade for her to finally realize why her temper always got in the way 😢

I remember so many people saying that Pixar fell off and "Is this the end of Pixar?" and talking about how bad this movie... was going to be. The entire time I was just baffled at everyone saying this because we knew almost nothing about the film, the trailers had been quite vague and we just... had nothing to judge it by, really... but everyone was criticizing it before it even came out? Then it comes out and is successful... and a pretty good movie! Perhaps not on the level of some of their other films, but it's definitely worthy of the Pixar branding!

@@drewb3388 I wouldn't put it all on them... they kept things vague but they didn't do anything that should've discouraged viewers. If they did anything, they failed to get positive attention. On the other hand, I saw SO MUCH negative publicity from random people saying that it was going to be bad... when all we really knew was "element people interact" An unfortunate amount of them had social traction, leading to these ideas getting spread at least as much as the trailers... I made sure to watch the film ASAP because I found the negative publicity stupid, but a lot of people would've heard it and accepted it as truth without ever giving the film an actual chance.

What I love about this romance, while it's clear that Ember and Wade find each other attractive, when they fell in love has nothing to do with how they look. Wade falls for Ember's passion and "light", Ember falls for Wade's emotional intelligence and ability to connect to people. It's so beautiful and refreshing.

I took a college course on fairytales several years back, and one of the professor’s lessons really stuck with me: Throughout the history of humanity, fairytales, fables, and cartoons have served the same purpose - teaching each generation important lessons on what it means to be human. The same fairytale viewed at different parts of your life will have different lessons to teach, and this is why we tell the same stories over and over. For a child, a fairytale teaches resilience, integrity, and how to find the magic in the world around you. For teenagers and young adults, a fairytale teaches how to find yourself and become the person you want to be. For adults, a fairytale teaches how to be a good parent, neighbor, and member of society. Since taking that class, I have made a point of consuming as many of these fairytales and cartoons made for kids as I can, so that I can learn their important lessons. I feel like it’s made me a better person. I love seeing you go on this journey and take us with you. I feel like more people need to learn the lessons these films teach, instead of writing them off as “for kids” just because they are cartoons.

Also, as a fan of romance, I loved getting a Disney Pixar movie that is a straight up romance. i love how this movie portrays interracial relationships. it's mostly about how race doesn't mean two people can't fall in love, which is unfortunately still an extremely needed message as people, both white and of color, can be very anti interracial marriage. however it also explores the way that being from different cultures does genuinely affect a relationship in positive and negative ways. wade, representing the privileged person in the relationship, is extremely kind and loving and accepting however they still argue because it's true that he does not personally understand what it is like for ember to be in the type of pressure she is in, it's not as simple as he makes it out to be. despite this being somewhat of a con, it also offers her a new, good perspective that she never even considered because she's never been in the position to be able to consider it. i'm white and have been in an interracial relationship, so in the racial metaphor i know what it's like to be wade. but, i also grew up extremely poor with extremely high pressure from my parents to fill their shoes and be a specific person who does specific things the way they do, and i know what it's like to date someone who comes from a carefree, ~fluid~ family (water joke) so i know what it like to be ember in those moments when there are arguments where they just don't get it and moments of light where they showed me a new way of living that isn't being what my parents tell me i am. it's just an incredible movie overall.

This movie for me worked all the way up until Wade crashed the ceremony. He pissed me off doing that, and I feel it perpetuates a bit of a harmful narrative because of it. I really wish they worked it out differently and both understood one another's point of view, and the whole crashing the ceremony thing was just too much (although I feel like it was a refrence to famous dramas like bollywood and kdrama films- it just didn't work in this case) Otherwise an amazing film imo. The firepeople give me strong asian/middle eastern vibes, and the music HITS

I personally didn’t like this movie that much, but I’m glad that so many people like it! You should react to Ratatouille or Wall-E next!

If you're taking requests from comments, I recently watched The Mitchells vs. the Machines. It's on Netflix, so you're probably able to watch it from there. And it's _another_ movie believe it or not with similar themes you mentioned, so it also kinda keeps the meme train going in a way. Which is actually aesthetically relevant to the movie funny enough!! So yeah anyway, greatly recommended.

I’m so glad her father didn’t die and they had that full circle moment where she bowed and gave him the highest honor the way his father couldn’t for him, because that is SO important for people like me. our parents sacrificed so much, and there’s so much going on in our heads about how we can ever repay them - at the cost of our own dreams, sometimes

Best customer service moment I've had was when I worked at a sushi place and a customer wanted to order 50 pieces of mixed fish, while claiming to be allergic to.... FISH. 💀 After 10-15 minutes of me trying to make the customer understand to not order fish so they don't die, they finally said they weren't allergic, they just don't like weird fish. They wanted just salmon and tuna, which we had on the menu 🤦

I liked this movie a lot! The soundtrack is gorgeous! I think it's so cool how the explanation of the bow is almost just like a quick little thing mid story but then when it comes back around it hits you like a tonne of bricks😢

Oh man, Niall. I just thought of a movie you might really enjoy. It's called Wolf Walkers, by Cartoon Saloon. Great animated movie that covers some lesser known werewolf lore, some very sweet sentiments about family, friendship, and freedom, along with some themes of environmental conservation and sustainability. Cartoon Saloon also created Song of the Sea and Secret of Kells. The art style is very whimsical and the music is beautiful. I know I'd love to see your reaction to it!
