I remember watching Grandizer in Quebec which was called Golderak. That was when I was a kid in the 1970's. I loved the series it was my all time favourite. I didn't know it was out I will have to watch it. I did love the retro design of many of the Go Nagai newer remakes from Mazinger Z and Getter Robo.

I feel that it is necessary to have seen certain things about Mazinger and Grendizer to fully enjoy Grendizer U, I liked it a lot and even more so because of the participation of Mazinger Z.

I really liked Grendizer U (I really hope there will be a season 2 because of all the possibilities that it could bring) for several reasons: 1/ this series has its own personality on a visual level (the use of light colors in particular or the design of the superb Vegastar) and on a storyline level (the idea of doubling the princesses of Vega was a brilliant idea even if risky and in the end they invented something that held water); 2/ It's funny to see teenagers tossed around by feelings and ideas that they don't have a good handle on; 3/ The robots have their own identity and they are quite superb (Grendizer is faithful to the original but it is well modernized); 4/ The two opening and ending credits are very beautiful visually and aurally with talented Japanese groups; 5/ While Sayaka and Mazinger were expelled from the 1975 Grendizer series, here they have their place and it is successful; 6/ The characters regain their original personality even if they have been reinterpreted in an interesting and subtle way; 7/ The mythological and technological aspects are quite interesting; 8/ The female characters are particularly well highlighted, they are luminous and archetypal personalities. Hikaru has only retained his original character's serious side. In the original series, she is seen praying. This was perhaps what guided the authors to make her a priestess. Maria Grace Fleed is still so cute, so kind, so strong ! What an iconic princess of japanese mecha series!

I liked your review about the show. Sadly, I dropped it maybe by episode 5. It didn't got me hooked like the original did. Your explanations of its faults convinces me that I did the right thing by not continuing to watch it. I might go revisit the original one day. It's been a very long time since I last saw it so I can't say if I'll still enjoy it. However, if I were to choose which of the two versions of to watch, I'd still prefer the old one as it has better storytelling.

Yeah, the ending theme (Protect You by Band Maid) and (most of) the Mecha and Character designs were the only saving graces of this show. The first half of the show was meh, the second half was complete garbage. Fukuda screwed this show over.
