There's some DARK magical girl series out there honestly.... The genre isn't just about "cute girls doing cute things" anymore. This show is actually the 2nd time the genre got subverted since it went the "Interspecies Reviewers" route and just went raw fanservice. The first subversion is around when Madoka came into existence (which is one of the darkest magical girl anime out there).
