Richard, stuff I learned from a builder as a beginner plastering. Seal the wall with pva and water first, Always use new plaster , there’s different types wall finish, board finish etc- look at the dates. Mix a small amount each time using new gear. There is stuff they used to call browning that you can mix in a tin bath using a rake🙀, this can be used to level and dries slower. It can be levelled with a plastic float, put nails in to key the base coat as you go. Finish plaster, put a first coat on the wall quickly, don’t bother smoothing too much . Do a new mix and put a second coat on top of the first - this stops the wall drying it quickly. Let the top coat dry a little and use a wet steel float to smooth. The extra time it gives you allows you to do ceilings too, if the ceiling is big do it in two halves. Hope this helps you 👍🍷🍷 Martijn is great but be yourself, your channel has its own charm and humour👍👍
@threeacresofmarche
@threeacresofmarche 6 ай бұрын
Thanks @davemitchell8756 . That does help, yes. There is so much to it with the different types and getting the bond right. The top coat goes on well and the end result is....good enough! 😂 I will show that in the next few videos.👍

There are few things in life more satisfying than taking on a new challenge, or a daunting job and then standing back and realising you've made a good job of it and you feel your confidence nudge up another notch :-) Well done, Richard, you are making a great job of the renovations and lovely to see the house revealing some interesting character elements 👍 My guess is that leaving some of those stubborn patches of plaster, rather than fighting them (80:20 rule), will add to the character as another layer of visual texture. Just keep doing your vids as you have been; unscripted, spontaneous and down to earth. As a society the English speaking world and the vlogging world especially, has become obsessed with polish and perfect, utopic images. Life only has fleeting moments like that, not a constant every day. I'm so glad you don't constantly beg for 'like, subscribe and hit the notification bell'. If you produce good content the people that like it will do those things on their own volition - and look how your channel is growing! 😁 Keep up the good work and that 'Human touch': may it go from strength to strength 👍

I've been watching Martijn from the outset. His production is beautiful, but you do you. I like the chat. I'm a Brit renovating in the UK. Coincidentally I'm also in "negotiations" with ants and currently have a jack hammer on hire to take a corner fireplace out. In fact...I'd better get on...😂

Hi @angiej4865 . There is a great tip in the comments from someone.... 5 grams of cloves put into the bottle and add 1 litter of water, (50 gr of cloves to 10 l of water......you get that, don't you) leave in dark place for 15 days and pour onto the ants nest and the way they travel into the house and around the house. I will be trying this.👍

Morning Richard. The satisfaction from the transformation is the driving force. The empty wallet is the only casualty. The dust, noise, mess, along with the setbacks I don't miss anymore. I have been on the reno merry go round with several homes. My friends keep saying I'll do it again. For me the only mess I want in my kitchen is from making pie crust. I would be thrilled to see you just have the land to work on, be out and about, and retire at the end of the day to a finished house. I watched another majestic sunset over the Pacific, it's the best of rest for me now. You'll get there, dreams are meant to be lived not wake up from.

I don't know how you do it - it's not just all the work inside and out but with all the travel time, editing KZbin videos and answering all the comments. That chews up time. Oh Hello... the bricks were a nice discovery surprise, that's not the usual case in renos. Nice to get a break even if it means more work. Well worth the effort, but I'm not doing the chipping. Those new thin bricks at 70 - 75 euros would nave been a big expense and not looked near as good. Plus another thing to wait on for delivery. In Mexico lots of the piping/conduits run outside of the house vs running all the way inside the concrete walls. A short re- route to the outside. No need to smash more walls then - just a thought. In my reno craze years, there wasn't much I didn't tackle, I had days were I was so knackered that I went to bed at 5:30, so drained that I couldn't even sit of the sofa and watch some telly. Yes, pizza was a life line. So for me sometimes it hurts just watching you work at it, that tug of war between the house and the land. Lived it, loved it, but now after doing that in 5 homes in 11 years - it is my time for the sweet life. There will still be projects but not that magnitude. Before I forget - where are your earplugs? I'd stand on a platform when chipping away higher up, that puts less stress on your shoulders and back. I thought there was a one step up platform behind you. Get a thick rubber mat to stand on - helps with leg fatigue and gives you a grip. The asbestos needs to be professionally removed - that is one thing you don't want to handle.

HI @LindaSiuzdak . Thank you for taking the time to write and share. It is a journey and as long as it moves forward without too many set backs then I think that it feels ok to keep going as the progress is showing already. I think you are right about the water. A re route outside will be no issue and that will save me a load of mess and sweat over damaging a pipe inside the house. Best wishes to you. Enjoy those sunsets!😎

Love the progress--and 40 minutes was not too long. Try working top down on those projects. And my wife says hold the hammer drill/chisel tool close to the body--use your core not your arms and shoulders :) Also, placing a tarp down where you're working might help with the clean-up. There's my weekly 2 cents (take 'em or leave 'em). Good job! Already waiting for the next one!

Hi @frankn4618 it looks like that as I think similar pipes are used to feed wires. The large pipe is the soil pipe with the thinner pipe being the grey water waste. That part of the house has a waashing machine, bidet, sunk etc. All wiring comes in above ground elsewhere.👍

If have a possibility to put the hot water into those pipes than you can use a thermal camera to see where exactly they are going in the wall. It works even in a thick concrete.

@@lapsedluddite3381Yes, but the water must be really cold (ice cold) to make a difference between the wall and pipe temperature. I use hot - almost 100’C

Thanks @Lukas-bn4qi . I will bear that tip in mind next time. The challenge I have on this one is that I cannot make a flow without setting up a pipe and tap etc. I had a friend visit to give me some fresh eyes on the problem - with all the plans for outside it seems easier to re pipe from the corner of the house so that I know where the pipes are and then close off / empty this old one and forget about trying to figure out how it gets through the house.👍

I’ve worked so much lately doing 2 jobs 7 days a week I caught the flu & now spending my days off sick, lesson learned, more life -less work =balance. Tip for the plastering get a spray bottle and mist the wall down before chucking the render on, it helps it suck in and bond better (Plasterer’s better half & mud mixer). Happy to tag along for the ride when you get time to put a video out, love the bricks you found. 🫶🏻Shell 🇦🇺 ps, Lee uses a polystyrene broccoli box as a float to smooth over the render, he cuts a rectangle & glues a little piece to the other side for a handle.

Its the Italian way that I am getting used to. I have split the house in two parts - building the one end while I relax and sleep at the other end.
