Genuinely really interesting, you'd never know shims were so important so thanks for passing on all your research. Also, loving the tool improvisations! What we welsh lack in money (or just being tight) we make up with ingenuity :D

FWD gearbox diff shimming seems much easier than RWD, as (I guess) the drive gears are parallel and not in 90 degree angle. I do not remember exactly how it goes, but something like you need to shim RWD diff so that the big gear and small gear align with as big contact patch as possible, and there is certain tolerance of play that must remain between them, and you need to measure that play. Otherwise the gears will wear out or bang each other in pieces. Shouldn't be such risk on FWD gearbox and diff, as there's no angle between the gears.

Taper roller bearings are matched during manufacturing and work best installed as a set and therefore not a good idea to install new inners into the old outer races.
@st200ol4 жыл бұрын
I was going to comment the same, I've always replaced them as set for the same reason. If the set isn't changed then I bet there will be race to bearing high-spots = messed up preloads as they wear.

@Sparkplugsteve4 жыл бұрын
I thought I did? They determine how much preload or pressure will be put on the bearings. Ford specify close to 0.14mm of preload pressure. So the shims are designed to get you close to that figure.

Funny man, last time you shared about the LSD and that was the day I received mine. Now I see your update on it and I just got mine installed. Run it for about 100km already and it feels very good. 2 things I noticed: the first gear in slow speed is very hard to turn. The second gear 3k rpm with small throttle already pull you a lot. A low better than my previous MFactory 1 way LSD. I believe you can do a better in the track with this Kaaz LSD. Just remember to fully turn off the ESC 😂

Steve, I have a spaceframe Fiat 126 which I recently swapped over from a bike engine to a 1.6 Ecoboost. Engine is about to start getting some extensive work including a new uprated clutch, looking for 350bhp+ . Looking to reduce costs I have this week decided not to fit a Blackline LSD, what made you go for the KAAZ at £200+ more ? Love the channel, much good information without young boy froth. My car is iat Scottish kitcar centre on facebook if you want to follow the progress.
@rtashev4 жыл бұрын
From what research I've done the Blackline diff is a Chinese one and is lower quality (they require you to change the oil after 100 km, in order to prevent any shavings from the diff damaging the gearbox). Blackline is not a plated diff like the KAAZ (check steeve's last video where he opened the kaaz and showed the diff plates), it is more similar to a Quaife or Mfactory diff. I think for my fiesta I'm going with Mfactory as I found it the cheapes on focusrsparts.com and it seems to be high quality
@Sparkplugsteve4 жыл бұрын
I really wanted a plated diff and not just a torque biasing one.

Guys sorry if this is off topic. I just got a fiesta st mk7 and am looking at a CP2E upgrade. Is the exhaust and uprated intercooler very beneficial? Car won't be used on track just normal/spirited driving. Does the catback exhaust give much in the way of power output?
@stegillibrand37404 жыл бұрын
You would need a decatt/sports cat for the CP2E not for the CP2 thoo

So when your preload was too much at 0.45mm(too much pressure on bearing)the space between the casings needs to be increased, so when changing the shim from 0.50mm to 0.30mm doesn’t that increase the preload ? Or did you add the 0.30mm shim to the already fitted 0.50mm shim ? ...... as you say it is confusing 🤣
@Sparkplugsteve3 жыл бұрын
0.3 is smaller than 0.5 so the preload is 0.2 less. So the bearing race is moved out away from the bearing by 0.2

Good stuff. I did a full rebuild of my trans last year. I made a post about it here: blog.sluggyjunx.com/rebuilding-the-transmission-in-my-2014-ford-fiesta-st/ Includes annotated manual pages and part numbers, etc. One comment- AFAIK the bearing cups and carriers are matched pairs so in general you want to replace both the cup (race) and the cage/carrier/rollers and not one or the other. I got lucky with my shims. Was able to re use the .5mm shim which was nice. (Yes, I followed the procedure in the manual to measure the pre load.) :) Keep it up. Love the vids.
