Look at that mechanic's trick at 00:35 - put your oil cap near the hood latch, so that you cannot close the hood without re-filling the oil (this is a trick when doing oil changes, so even though this was not an oil change, his habit is well formed!)

I have a 2013 FPIS 3.5 EcoBoost, Essentially a SHO. Had to replace my PTU a couple weeks ago. I got a used one from a local auto recycler aka junk yard for around $250-$300, it only had 18,000 miles on it. I pulled the drain plug out to drain any residual oil out of it and the oil was pretty clean. So it in went. Works great, no problems with it yet.

During night trade school, started as a lube tech at Ford, worked my way up to heavy line, dipped for MB of Loveland CO, master certified and changed careers flyin planes internationally. Sitting at a hotel watchin you dig into the show and me just chuckling over all the things I've repaired 100 times. You got it figured out my man! I could slam a PTU in 2.5 hrs 😂. Don't miss flat rate AT ALL. Especially under warranty. Anywho, leaking/ lack of gear oil, then burned bearings were 100% the cause of all ptu failures. Had many that welded the bearings to the races.

That appeared to be the same PTU I installed in my friends 2015 explorer that he uses as a work truck, AWD 3.5 turbo so I looked it up and it’s the same part. He bought it salvaged and I fixed it, had about 100k at the time. It was wrecked but just body damage. The original PTU failed soon after he started driving. No surprise to me, he uses it for work and drives a lot, well over 50k a year. He also doesn’t check fluids and goes thru vehicles often. In any case, he paid $500 for the jdmspeed PTU. I did put Amsoil fluid in the PTU as I knew they weren’t the best, but they’re not the worst either. It’s been two years and that PTU is still quiet. That explorer is ran wide open daily, goes off road often. It’s been a good car. It has nearly 250k on the original engine and transmission. tldr: I’m surprised at how durable this eco boost explorer has been and the jdmspeed PTU is still quiet with over 100k on it and the same Amsoil I put in it when installed. I’ve told him to change the fluids, but he doesn’t listen.

I can picture the confused expressions when you said that. "LSC???" I never thought of talking about hypothetical dangerous cults. Hypothetically, of course. That would be an interesting experiment. Usually, I'm just nice to them, especially if it's a teenager. (I feel badly for them, having grown up in it without much choice) Instead of going door to door, they could... I don't know... Make friends with neighbors and actually form relationships? I suspect that's frowned upon, though, since neighbors are "of the world" and, therefore, a bad influence. The one thing I have little patience for is thinly veiled condescension and judgment, though. "We know better than you."

You are correct about the reliability. I happen to be a Ford guy, but this Flex (Taurus SHO wagon essentially) is the third most unreliable car I've ever worked on. That's pretty bad because I've worked on a 1989 V12 XJS, which might be the most unreliable car ever made. I've replaced the turbos once, the whole engine once, the transmission once, the torque converter 4(!) times, the CV axles on both sides, the intermediate shaft, the trans cooler/AC condenser coil, it completely destroys even expensive high wear rating tires in less than 30k miles, and tires are *really* expensive because it's on 20s, the brake sponginess thing has literally plagued this thing since the beginning of my ownership, and everything in the braking system has been changed at least once except the ABS module (it does stop pretty well for such a heavy car though), wheel bearings all around, it eats a set of pads every 20-30k miles, the right rear caliper failed and froze up twice now, I replaced the front seat which had a rip, the center console lid broke off. the heater control/entertainment screen thingy failed twice, I've replaced the blend door actuators multiple times and I've just given up on them because the AC and heat still work with the click-click-click, the rear evaporator core sprung a leak, I'm sure I'm forgetting some things. Yeah. It's a big old pile of dung this car, but when it's working right, it's a blast. Accelerates quick, stops well, handles surprisingly well for a 5k lb SUV, it's comfortable, gets okay highway mileage compared to a proper rear drive body on frame SUV. FML though. I didn't buy what I wanted, a BMW, because I wanted something reliable. Nope.

My experience with PTUs (Fleet services ten years ago) They fail for two reasons primarily, assymetric tire sizes, which you wouldnt think same size same brand can do that, but its as easy as fresh set on the front/rear and 50% on the other axle. That causes lash bias where the worn axle set is ALWAYS under trailing stress which creates alot of heat, breaks the fluid down and it either breaks the seals down and starts leaking until its out of fluid and fails OR it retains the fluid and wears all the components until the gearset is so sharp its like razors. Then teeth break off and destroy everything. Second reason, loss of fluid, almost always related to the first. Moral here, dont mix and match your tires on edges, explorers or tauruses. Now that said, I've seen police explorers with 240k miles, factory PTU.

PROPS for actually taking the time to explain things to your inquisitive son!! My sons were that way all through childhood, and I (a lifer design engineer) always tried to take time to explain things to them... even at a very young age. One graduated from MIT a couple years ago with a Masters in Electronic Engineering, the other is making superb grades as a Sophomore at Brown University in Aerospace Mechanical Engineering... both on scholarships they earned. Parents... don't ever tell your child "you wouldn't understand"...!!... that's a LAME way to treat an inquisitive mind! Instead, respond to their curiosity with good explanations... IT'S THEIR FUTURE YOU'RE BUILDING! Your taking time to explain to them may spark something in their mind and spirit... it may plant a seed of something that sets their direction for the rest of their life!

I 100percent agree that some cars are better and more reliable than others that is just facts but I'm a massive believer that no matter what car you have if you look after it treat it correctly with proper regular maintenance and services that car will be relatively reliable

Oh, regarding DI, I have an M276 motor in the 2013 C300 4Matic Sport. When I needed the shop to replace a leaky cam position sensor which I could get to without removing the intake manifold and I had no gaskets at the time, they peeked inside the intake ports and discovered that at 123k miles, the M276 (with original injectors, etc.) was not "carboned-up". Good to know. I guess my regular oil changes at 5k miles with Liqui Moly and using Shell 93 octane fuel most of the time really helps out. I have also begun to use the Liqui Moly DI fuel additive as well. Great mileage and power... 36mpg at 75mph and it seems more powerful than 247hp. Also, the 4Matic transfer box is in great shape, as I had the shop change its oil at about 65k miles after I bought the car. The fluid out of it was okay, as well. So, I guess there is a huge difference between M-B and Ford. 🙂 Keep up the great work, Alex/Mark.

When replacing pads and rotors easiest way I use to compress a caliper piston is with a flat screw driver. Before removing the caliper stick the screwdriver between the pad and rotor and simply pry pushing the piston back in. Makes a brake job really easy and faster.

Should do a power takeoff unit rebuild video. As long as gears/shafts aren’t damaged it’s just bearings and seals and then you have a back up.
