I would have thought the biggest problem was that you can't log in to manage the box reliably. It regularly takes a half hour or longer for me to get in, and once I'm in it's questionable if I'll be allowed to do anything without it freezing.

Synology could, if they wanted to, use RGB lights for things like CPU/HDD temp, for type of activity(raid scrubbing and so on) and much more. Is it necessary? No. Would it be neat? yes :D

Synology should include 1 RGB header at least. In fact, they should find a way to light the Synology logo on the front panel. I think that would look cool. I too, would like to add one on my Synology DS1817. But I'll find a simple way to modding it without voiding my warranty. But interesting take, Jason.

Multiple 12V rails, maybe tapped into 12V standby power. Probably all listed on the label on the power supply.

Blue LEDs require the highest voltage and red the lowest so that’s why battery powered RGB lights lose blue first.
@KillaBitz4 жыл бұрын
True but these things have a voltage regulator on the little board (that's why they work between 5-12v) so it's not a voltage issue as such. It's seems like a current issue witch seems odd judging by the size of the cables from the psu also it was a pcie power or something should be good for a few LED's. Hey at least you did it. Lets hope it's not to much for the power supply.

@mortenmoulder4 жыл бұрын
You have a multimeter - why not set it to DC 20 (or equivalent on your multimeter) and check the voltage? Or find the plug connector pinout so you can see what is what? I'm sure the PSU in that thing also has a model, which you can use to find the amperage of each rail. Power supplies should easily be able to handle 5-10 amps at 12v, which is plenty for LEDs.. plenty. You don't even need 1A for all those you installed in there.
@Markyroson2 жыл бұрын
That is pretty cool but I imagine it is most definitely warranty voiding lol

I like the idea. Maybe try opening the PSU as they usually have extra pin outs or pads to add wires to. I have rewired a PSU for my PC and it can be petty simple. You would be able to get the power you need for more RGB LEDs.
@MrV1NC3N7V3G44 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing those LED's run off of 30v DC, so to use them correctly you would need a buck converter on the yellow 12v line to increase the voltage. However, since you didn't even check the output voltage of the included power supply first, I don't recommend you do any more tinkering lol. Just buy you some low power LED strips and done.

All NAS like this are very overpriced for the hardware you are getting - slow CPU, missing NVMe slots, usually missing 10G RJ45 ethernet and because of slow CPU you are often not even getting full performance out of your HDDs/SSDs.
@GravGunner4 жыл бұрын
Do you have any knowledge on this or just trolling? Yes, these boxes are more exprnsive, but not that much more for comparable hardware(the prosumer/enterprise kind) in this size category. Nvme is included in the newer/more powerful models and very often not needed. Just like 10GBe. With SSDs you can fill the 1GBe easily, but yoy dont have the storage, with HDDs you have to have about 8 to fill it. As for speed, never noticed a difference between my synology DS1515+ and my Dell PowerEdge r720xd.
@OneCosmic7494 жыл бұрын
@@GravGunner Any current X570/B550/Z490 motherboard with enough PCIe slots and PCIe bifurcation is a much better option than Synology overpriced ARM or Intel Atom based NASes - you will get wastly more performance CPU and no bottleneck to your NVMe SSDs for the same price or even cheaper than Synology. You would have no problem to saturate a 10G NIC, maybe even a 20 or 40G NIC in the future.

So not having lights is their biggest problem? Really??? This was clearly a not how to do something. Did you even use a volt meter? This was a poor hack. Lighted up like this would drive me nuts anyway. My 30+TB NAS is in my small closet with the rest of my home network. Considering ask the sloppy work in past jobs, this really didn’t surprise me. I expected maybe a CPU upgrade. Which is what I did in my Intel based 6 drive NAS. Upgraded the CPU and upgraded the RAM to having a lot more even though neither were really upgradable. It worked! Made my NAS quite a bit faster for what it is. This was throwing in some pointless lights. I mounted one of those type of light strips under the side of my bed with a motion sensor. So when I get off in the middle of the night in the dark, the light pops on and lights the floor along the side of my whole bed. I can clearly see my way to the master bathroom where I swapped the light switch to one that glows orange so I can see it. Both were cheap to do and far, far more useful, then putting lights in a NAS which isn’t a flaw or even needed. A lot of videos I see here seems to be “Not what to do”! Other things are interesting and can give me a idea, just do it better, safer, neater. But hey, you’re on KZbin. Tire getting free hardware. It seems to work. People watch!
