I completely agree with you about the helmet. The new Mk3 helmet isn't bad it's cool, but it doesn't feel like a Mk3 helmet it looks like it would be more at home on a Mk4 or something. Maybe if the spike was taken off it may look better but as it is they just don't hit that Knight look that the old helmet provides. I'm excited for the new Mk3 and can't wait to get a box but it'll take some time to get used to the helmet Great video as always Andy :)

Personally, I like the new MK3 helmets. Sure the spike on the top is more inline with the deathguard, but they are more accurate to older artworks from the rogue trader era than the old mk3 kit. Which- I mean the heresy game IS just old rogue trader stuff made cannon. lol.

Since I am "new" to the hobby, I got to know the primaris marines as THE space marines. Later I got to know the older versions. Honestly, I love the new MK.III marines. Their helmet just looks evil. The older one seems goofy to me. Everyone has a different opinion and that makes this hobby so beautiful.

I don’t mind the new head, though the spike feels like it should be special (eg for the sergeant) rather than for the full army… I didn’t know the old kit was 40k-friendly, I’m just baffled by GW forcing a wedge between 30k and 40k for no real benefit. Do they really think it’ll force 40k fans to play 30k? Surely it would be better to just let the MUCH LARGER 40k playerbase buy the 30k kits and use them, it’s just printing money. I’m not going anywhere near 30k kits like the new Knight since it can be killed off from 40k at any minute. I probably would’ve bought this box if there wasn’t this divide, I really like the Dorito dreadnought. Oh well…

The spike can be easily removed to lessen the ‘specific legion’ feel. I’ve made some ultras for heresy with mk3, they look awesome. That being said I’m thinking I’ll get some ‘old mk3’ helms to use for certain squads, like assault or breach.

Looking back, I now feel as if Fafnir's model was the tell-tale sign of perhaps how the new MKIII armour might look (without all the extra ornate/personal/Legion decoration added). I'm wondering when, or if, Forge World will soon be releasing new Legion MKIII head/helmet kits. If they do, I hope they include the odd unique helm seen in some of the Legion Heraldries pages from the two Legion books. The Space Wolves, for example, have a MKII "Historical Variant" helm that looks super awesome.

In my opinion the new helmets look like those baseball helmets with a spike on top, with the little peak covering the eye lenses. I think its why i don't like the new imperial guard heads too, instead of "grimdark industrial military conplex" I'm getting "sports pro shop"

I find strange every negative feedback on the new sculpt is focused on the very Death Guard inspired helmet and not on the not lore friendly legs. Mk3 is supposed to be a derivative armor for breaching with heavy plates slapped on a more mobile Mk2 chassis. The new design of the legs conveys a very slick shape envelopping the leg whereas the older design showed the origin Mk2 on the backside. The old sculpts only needed an 8mm styrene disc, 2mm thick, at the waist to make them less squatty and fit better with the other Mks size. I love the new plastic vehicles but he new troops design doesn't speak to me unfortunately. I'll use the remaining styrene i got for my projects and will switch to resin for the new troops i need...

The design of the new helmet is fine, even good. It just doesn't feel very Mk III. The helmets just have no extra bulk compared with the Mk II heads on the HH vehicle sprues, when Mk III's whole thing is that it's a frontally reinforced Mk II. They got it right with the bodies, but the heads just look like variants I'd expect in a Mk II kit.

Totally agree. I really wanted to like the new mkiii, but they don't do it for me. I like the new scale, and changing the helmet helps, but I'd also want to swap the backpacks, and I prefer the old legs, so it starts to not feel worth it. Using the same upgrade sprue also feels a bit lazy. Pretty disappointing overall.

Did you think about adding the old pauldrons to the new model too? I have 2 boxes of the old Mark 3 still on sprue. I'm not getting into HH but I'm considering painting up each of the 18 Legions, just like I did with 18 Intercessors when I first entered the hobby. Thanks for the video it has helped me a lot. My original thoughts were really disliked the new helmet (good for Death guard though). Having now seen them assembled have to agree to scavenge up as many of the old MKIII helmets I can find and change them over. Might cut the spikes off a few and see if the look any better. Again thanks for this it has been a big help to see what they actually look like and how they compare to the lots of old MKIIs I have. Cheers

The grill looks shit on the new model. Top spike is way too big. It would be much better without the spike altogether. Plus that rim that runs around the helmet above the eyes gives the impression of a bowl cut harido. It's just an awful sculpt all round. Actual bodies are fine but you can easily find 3D print files for all Marks of armour so why bother buying the GW overpriced garbage?

@@MediocreHobbies meh! GW have been basically dead creatively for a decade or more. Plus let's not pretend anything they have ever made is original. They steal and lift IP without crediting anyone. The entire Hours Heresy is almost a word for word rip off of Dune. All their fantasy is lifted straight from Tolkien. Necrons are obviously from Terminator. Nids from Aliens. Tau from Japanese robot manga. They lifted from predator and many more. Makes me feel very little sympathy when individuals make models similar or exactly the same. Personally I like a lot of alternative sculpts much more than GWs models. The best thing about it all is the choice it provides. Your not just locked into their insane prices and limited creativity of the few minimum wage employees they have.

There is something very wrong with the new Mk3. their shapes are just somehow wrong. They feel like they are made from clay, especially if you look at the chest. It feels too smooth. Also, the poses are 1 to 1 as for mk6 to fit in the upgrade kits, maybe thats why they feel wrong.

Mixing the older, and current Mark III sculpts will give ones army much more character. There's one 3rd party that produces head that fits the artwork of the HH, and would further give you the flavor of that Era.

Great video as ever, Andy. It looks like each of the new Mk III poses closely matches those of the Age of Darkness MK VI Legion Marines. I imagine this is to make sure the various weapon sprues all work for the new releases but do seem to limit pose-ability. Might not matter that much with big units. I may trim some spikes for variety, but love the look of the older MkIII helmets on the new bodies. Anyway, sucker born every minute as I have pre-ordered the Battle Group box. I'd love to see you do a few paint jobs of these guys. I have a Sons of Horus army so them for sure, but maybe as a bit of a variant without going over old ground perhaps you could do a Lunar Wolves scheme as well?

Great video! Well tbh. I'm not a fan of the redesign. For me it feels kinda unnecessary especially when comparing it to the MK VI that was by far not that heavily modified/deviated from former/older depictions. I always enjoyed the "rough" and clunky look of the Iron armor and the curves take it away. And yeah that helmet gives me strong MK II/Death Guard vibes as well.

I haven’t had one in my hands yet, but from the pictures I’ve seen, I don’t like the way they’ve rounded off the foregrip area of the new Phobos bolters. They’ve always had sharp edges and looked brutal and uncomfortable, and as an early Mark of boltgun, I think that’s appropriate. And I totally agree about the helmet. It looks like the MKII helmet that’s included in the tank kits, while the older MKIII is one of my favorite Marine helmets of all time.

I’m definitely a much bigger fan of the new look. I’ve always hated the old mk iii kits. Please dont waste the beautiful old helmets on the new ugly plastic kits. I love the old MKIII miniatures, but the new ones are just ugly. Starting from the head, to the torso and the knees. Although the miniature itself is bigger, it doesn't have this feeling of weight the MK III armour should have. I also still don't understand why GW refreshed the MK III set, when there are still no plastic ones for MK II and MK IV.

I'm actually vibing with the new helmet, previously mk3 was my fav but after seeing the new size, the chin and face plate just feels off. I get that it's less knight shape, but I do get a ww1 esque feeling with the new one and I don't mind the spike

I like the old sculpt more options the new ones have been made this way to make them compatible with the weapon packs which if you want supports squads it costs you another 20 pounds I just think it’s all about making more money by forcing you to buy separate weapons packs

It's the spike that annoys me. Otherwise good kit. You did great with the head swap, definitely the best version.

You really just took an old Mk. III head and put it on the new body. That really doesn't work. The old head is just too big for the new body. My best advice is to find a nice 3d model for a head and get it printed.

I bluestuffed aquilas from sterngard veteran to have some double head eagles on my third legion's chests. I like the new scale but I want more options for the sergents. Also not a fan of the scull boucle. Im also using stengards heads or the crusader type from third parties

Not sure if I've missed the video but I'd be interested in seeing the Imperial Fist contrast paint on this Mk, the helmets is just gonna take time to get used to though I'll probably remove the spike when I get to working on them.

I hate the helmets also.really wish gw would have put some old heads in the box also . It would be nice if they released the old heads separately. That said i ordered a bunch of old style heads from a 3d printer.

I happen to have the opposite issue with these new guys. Their torsos and legs do not look like mk3, way to rounded and do not line up with the deathguard parts.

U hit the nail on the head on the new helmets luckily I used forge world Dark Angels helmets on my old mk3 so I got all the old helmets😀
