I remember flying on AN-24s as a kid in 80's Socialist Romania. The cockpit door was always open and the pilots commonly had us kids go in the cockpit to see the instruments and the snow-capped mountain tops. Good memories.

That Yak-40 tri-jet (S/N 9541545) was delivered new to Aeroflot on 23rd Jan 1976 before being transferred to Air Kazakstan on Jan 1st, 1993. From there it went to Irtysh Air in May '98 before returning to Air Kazakstan in March of 2003, and was eventually retired from service and preserved.

I remember my mum flying on an An-24 in 1965 from Warsaw to Gdansk in Poland when we were on holiday there. She had left us to visit her old school friend and her family while we stayed with my dad and my grandma in the North. The most memorable thing about the day was a civilian parachutist who drifted off the airport towards some houses but he was OK! In 1976 I flew from London to Warsaw on a Il-18 amazing!

Very fascinating experience you created for yourself! You're a brave man. During the time I lived in Russia from 1992 to 1996, I flew on four principal Soviet aircraft types - TU-134, TU-154 (B-2 and M), IL-62M and IL-86. I never managed to get aboard any others. FYI, the AN-24RV actually has a small auxiliary jet engine in one of its turboprop engine pods for takeoff assist. So it's a myth that the actual engines spout flames. 😉Also a point of interest - it's obvious that the seats were replaced at some point with better ones than the old Soviet types, which had very little padding and all had ashtrays.

Good vlog. I travelled on a YAK 40 from Gatwick Airport to Chiseau in Moldova around fifteen years ago, on Moldova airways. I was travelling business class (it was a work trip). Business section of the plane was at the front. Clearly during Soviet days there was not any call for business class Air Moldova created four Business class seats by using old Pan Am Business class seat bolted into the cabin. The flight itself was quite pleasant but noisy. Air Moldova offered full dinner service and when I asked for a brandy they gave me a full large bottle which I was allowed to take aag with me - Moldovan brandy is actually quite good. I worked in numerous overseas locations including Ukraine, Russia various African and Asian countries where I travelled in lots of soviet era planes and helicopters I am not sure that I would fly in Russian aircraft at present because of ongoing sanctions.

In 2006 I flew from Kyiv to Odessa. Diary entry from the time - On the Tuesday, we headed back to Borispol, this time the humble Domestic Terminal which closely resembles its counterpart at Sheremetyevo: Soviet airports were highly standardised. The flight to Odessa was with the oddly named “ARP 410 Airlines”. Oddly named, until you saw in Roman characters on the side of the aircraft: “Kyiv Aircraft Repair Plant 410”. But the plane itself was even odder, an Antonov 24, a 40-seater twin prop designed in the 1950s. A tanker was parked alongside it connected by a vast flexible hose, about a metre in diameter. The hose led through the passenger door. The purpose of this strange arrangement became apparent when we were allowed to board: it had been blowing hot air into the cabin. Very thoughtful. Rather less thought, however, had been given to the cabin itself. Gloomy and tatty it resembled a poorly maintained vintage school bus. With a nice touch of Soviet gentility: curtains. At the rear, seats were arranged around fixed tables. For a very brief moment I was reminded of photographs of the early days of air travel when flight was for the few and service modelled on The Queen Mary. But this was a purely functional affair. The plane vibrated alarmingly as the engines revved, but once airborne it flew beautifully, although I confess to being relieved that its 40-year old frame wasn’t tested by turbulence. At one point three members of the flight-deck crew had gathered in the passenger cabin: whether there was a fourth person minding the shop, one could only speculate. I learnt later that the UN forbids its personnel from flying on AN 24s. Why? Despite being one of the toughest aircraft ever built, its safety record isn’t brilliant: 130 recorded ‘hull loss’ crashes costing around 1,700 lives, 140 in the past year . But when you consider it’s the workhorse of short haul flights within the CIS, has been for 45 years, and is operated by such leading airlines as Air Kampuchea, Asa Prasada (Angola), Ecuatair (Equatorial Guinea), Cubana de Aviación, Mongolian Airlines and the Afghan Air Force, across terrain which might be classified as sub-ideal, perhaps it’s not too bad.

I don´t understand why you said "instant regret" in the title ... Regarding the "noise" inside the aircraft: That was standard in turboprops - not just in the USSR. Western turboprops of the time - and even much later - had the same noise level (e.g. Fokker F-27/SAAB340/HS748/Shorts360/EMB-120/ATR-42/etc.) Those AN-24 are not inherently more "dangerous". Operators using them nowadays very much look after them in terms of maintenance (spares still availlable sufficiently) but - of course - these aircraft show their age. My last flight in an AN-24 was not that long ago (2017) and it was Motor Sich Airlines UR-47297. It was delivered to Aeroflot on 15.04.1971 beeing 46yrs old by then already. This aircraft is still officially considered active and flew domestic in Ukraine until the war started but is stored "somewhere" since. I´m not sure whether Motor Sich will restart operating after the war (considering they only have ex Soviet aircraft in their fleet)

It was always banned to smoke in Soviet Airlines, but when I was flying AN 24 in 2004, one of the passengers asked a fly attendant to smoke in a luggage compartment and he was allowed to. The luggage compartment is in the front end of the plane. Looks like your plane interior was rebuilt. Older versions of interior usually included 8 business seats at the back, 4 on the right and 4 on the left. 2 seats looking forward and two facing back and a normal size table in between like a train coupe style.

Loved this! A little disappointing that I didn't get to see the flames from the engine, but still great in general, and all the people you talked to were so kind!
