Minsk is a fascinating city and a destination certainly worth a visit!.... I was lucky enough to visit Minsk and the surrounding area twice and I had a great time. Sadly, with my friends who used to live there having left the country and everything that is currently happening, it looks like I won't be returning any time soon though. There are lots of fun things to do and see around the city, and while that might sound priviledged, for me as a German everything was extremely affordable. I certainly couldn't hope to afford any 5-star restaurants in Munich, that's for sure :D The countryside is also really pretty and I can absolutely recommend a visit to Nesvizh and Mir castle. Everyone I've met there (except government workers, but that is to be expected apparently) was also super friendly and very curious as to why I was visiting their country. The only thing to keep in mind is that most people obviously won't be able to speak anything but Russian (or Belarussian, which is not the same!), so I would recommend having someone capable of speaking Russian with you when you go to places that aren't super touristy. I did fly on Lufthansa both times though, as it was already right in the middle of Covid and there was a fair amount of political unrest in Belarus following a certain "election", and in case of any lockdowns or flight bans I figured that Lufthansa would probably more interested in ensuring that I still got back home than Belavia. I didn't have to test that hypothesis though, as my last visit was pretty much exactly two months before that fateful Ryanair flight.

People let me tell you what happens with the language issue in Republic of Belarus. They speak Russian language, and that's it. Point. Full stop. Nothing else to tell. But - there is something else to tell. There is a little minority; I don't know how many percent, maybe under 1% that's for sure. And these people think that we should forget our mother language (and this is Russian). They tell us that we are supposed to speak our own separate language as a mother language. If you don’t - then you are a slave of Russia, something like this. Well and they insist that we should learn from the scratch invented by them language - the one that doesn’t exist anymore. For what reason, you wander? For no reason, just because they think it’s right for you. You don't see these people on the streets of our cities. No, you only meet these people on the internet, they write comments. They accuse us that we are not patriotic enough if we don't want to speak the Belorussian language. Nobody speaks Belorussian language in Belarus, nobody except for some crazy fanatics.

This video brings many beautiful memories about Belarus and Belavia, one of my favourite airlines. I had the pleasure to fly on Belavia when they had the old livery which I truly adored so much. I'm glad you described that livery as "iconic". Too bad I didn't get the chance to fly on the Tupolev 154 as they phased it out about the year 2018 if I'm not mistaken. Great video and please, post more videos about Belarus. It's a beautiful country and such a Soviet gem 😄

We were waiting for this one, Dave. Great storytelling! I have still a Belavia Leader card with some miles on it, which could get me upgraded to Business Class. Before COVID, you would always get a real meal, instead of that dry sandwich. I don't fly it frequently anymore, unfortunately...

Why?
@georgih7 ай бұрын
@@hightower6645 Because it's super clean everywhere, super safe, relatively cheap, a lot of beautiful women, etc. Nothing like the mess in Russia :) In my opinion Belarus is more like Poland and Germany, than Russia.

@@georgih Yeah. But what about their leader? I heard that the country is a dictatorship.
@dickcecil15707 ай бұрын
@@georgihWhat you mean? I live in Minsk and it is far from being Poland or Germany. City authorities have no idea how to make a proper modern city. Instead of good residential areas they spam goofy-looking multi-story buildings which look atrocious and tasteless. Same thing with office and public buildings. Hats off to them for maintaining the city but it's not enough to make it Germany or Poland.
