Cortinarius mushrooms grow worldwide. The subgroup "dermocybe" makes various shades of red dyes. I know that some of them grow in Europe, though I don't remember any specifics. They can make beautiful colors, though.
@micahmilne Жыл бұрын
There's a wikipedia article about Dermocybe mushrooms that gives decent basics. There are some excellent videos here on youtube about using them for dye that apply regardless of location. Try looking up C. Sanguineus and C. Semisanguineus. Both are good dyers which occur in Europe. There are many others as well. Handle with caution, though. This genus contains some of the most poisonous mushrooms in the world, so don't touch your face while handling them, don't cross-contaminate, etc.

Thank you, I'll look into them!

Yes, I'm in France and there are some of Cortinarius. But the question is : is it not dangerous to wear something dyed with Cortinarus ? Sorry, my english is not very well. @@micahmilne

Actually, I just tried it last week, and out of about ten tiny cortinarious mushrooms, I got about 1 bat of dark orange/light red wool. That was really cool! 😅 And I live in Bavaria, Germany. So the same species should be found in Belgium too. Though they were really tiny. I found them still with their cortina on and some dark red gills in a mixed sprouce- beech forest on alkaline soil. The next days I will try some other cortinarious species I found last weekend.

Hi I just now found your channel, how nice to find a fellow Dutchie who talks about mushroom dyeing and spinning. There is lots to watch in the near future, I see. We live in the woodsbetween Zwolle and the german border. Are you anywhere near us? The dyers polypore are abundant over here. Staatsbosbeheer had done a lot of sawing and then the dyers polypore are the most happy. You don't have to worry about removing them, they are parasitic on the trees. I can dry a few for you and send some. We have lots of Velvet Pax (zwartvoetkrulzoom or tapinella atrotomentosa) here now. They are really nice for dyeing purple and green with iron. The Really red cortinarius or Bloedrode gordijnzwam are protected and very very rare in our regions. You can dye with a combination of boletes or boleten. As far as I know, lobsters don't grow over here. What is a shame. Do you know the mushroom colour atlas? there is lots of info to find. Groetjes uit Overijssel

No fungi tips, but if you're wearing gloves that are way too big a way to get them to stay on your hands better is to put a hairtie around them on your wrist. It will leave a red mark like a too-tight hairtie always will when you wear them around your wrists, but it will keep the gloves pulled down on your hands. And if you're scared of dyestuff getting onto your watch, you can also make sure that the elastic is further up your arm than the watch, keeping the watch safe under the gloves. What a beautiful colour you got from those mushrooms! So cool. I finally did my own first dyeing last month, with onionskins. It was surprisingly easy, although maybe not something I will try in my own apartment that has no outside space...

I'm amazed that you got 100% certainty on mushroom identification, but maybe in your area that's the only mushroom that looks even remotely like that. I would really only worry about being that certain of a mushroom if I was planning on eating it, if you thought you had a dye source that didn't end up doing much, it's not a disaster. I'm really going to need to look into dye modifiers (especially iron) if I'm going to explore natural dyeing more next year, because as impressive as that vibrant yellow is, I am all about the greyed-out colors!
@MijnWolden Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't think there is any mushroom native to where I live that has those characteristics. And if deadlines for KZbin videos weren't a thing, I would be happy enough to just throw any mushroom in my pot, but somehow you want to make fun videos with nice outcomes too :D Iron is a remarkable modifier, and so easy to make! If you enjoy those greyed out colours it's awesome to work with. But you could also start with a grey fleece or yarn and overdye that with the desired colours.
@BearsCrochetCritters Жыл бұрын
This was wonderful. I am fond of mushrooms and lichen and enjoy trying to identify the ones I find. One idea for your future dye experiments is to explore lichen dyes. I'm not certain what variety is available in your area, but I would look into Shield Lichen (Parmeliaceae family). Happy dying and spinning to you.

Oct 7 ‘24 from a van den Heuvel born in NJ, USA i am so glad to find you today. I am a botanical dyer and printer just starting to experiment with fungi. On my way home after foraging far away and finding a huge burgundy red rishi and what i hope is a dyers poly pore similar to yours.. both of which i just brought back a portion of. I only need a very small amount since i am only wanting to test for color on silk and paper then turn it to a tiny amount of pigment. My flight has been changed and i have extra hours at the airport so what a joy it was to have your KZbin pop up! This was a year ago so i hop you have found more.

What a lovely yellow. Can't wait to see what it looks like spun into yarn and made into something beautiful. So a very old tree fell over at the bottom of the farm where I have a little cottage, and I found what I believe to be a large Polypore mushroom on it, but the mushroom is very very dry and crumbly, but I have collected it. I am slowly slowly gathering and setting up everything I need to make natural dyes using plants and flowers that I find on the farm - my challenge is two fold - I have not done this before and I was gifted 6 large balls of raw cotton yarn - which I believe is a more involved process to dye - but I am not afraid (well just a little). I hope to let you know sooon if my beautiful mushroom produces a good colour .

Inspired by your dyeing shenanigans and by several videos by Becca Lewis (she’s a spinner and a veteran at natural dyeing) I’m in the process of collecting onion skins and lichen. I’m working on one of my neighbours to part with immature walnuts and some walnut leaves. I’m drying the lichen (collected off fallen branches) and the walnut parts will go in the freezer. If another sizeable branch happens to tumble down one of my birch trees, that inner bark will join the baggies of walnut parts in the freezer. My daughter would like a gradient scarf in warm, autumnal tones. That means going from a rich brown to a yellow to, perhaps, a cream tone to complete the gradient. I have absolutely no idea how this is going to play out but hey, free dyestuff and the opportunity to spectacularly fail… or succeed. My kinda challenge. Especially since I’ve never attempted dyeing.
@MijnWolden6 ай бұрын
Good luck! Walnuts are a great dyestuff, they don't need a mordant because they're so rich in tannins.
@eddavanleemputten92326 ай бұрын
@@MijnWolden - Even better! I have used walnut husks to draw and paint… and sometimes use them as a free source of tannins for my meads. How I didn’t remember that tannins are a mordant… probably a solid case of Weekend Brain. LOL

As people have stated, Lobster mushrooms (Hypomyces lactiflourum) have tons of great colors that change depending on the age of the sample. Even though you can't get them in Europe, it shouldn't be too hard to get them from Etsy, or someplace like that. H. lactiflourum used for dyes are usually cheaper than the ones used for eating. Chanterelles are also known to have dye-worthy properties, and should grow in Europe Boletus edulus, aka the King bolete, or Penny bun, has a reddish-yellow reaction with ammonia as a catalyst, and that should be common in your neck of the woods, too en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushroom_dye
