Though, I still have a hard time with old ones. I can ID young corts, but still not so sure about the old ones. But I use this test often!

I doubt I can find these where I live but I watched to the end just to listen to your wise and lovely mom. I love how you have a mom with so much knowledge and a brother who can produce videos! What a creative family. I would have liked to see more on the results of dyeing with these though. Perhaps another video comparing different types of mushrooms? And with different fibres ?

Thank you for making this delightful video. I suspect that we’re semi-neighbors, based on the fact that you were foraging at Salt Point. I really need to take a another class with a mushroom dye expert. It’s such a fascinating area of study.

welcome I loved your mother very much, but I have some questions for her First, how many grams of mushrooms give how much dye? How long does the dye in the clothes last before it disappears? Can we use the dye water several times or all at once?
@MyraMadeColor
@MyraMadeColor Жыл бұрын
Generally, you'll want a 1:1 ratio of mushrooms to fiber. 2:1 ratio is ideal. This mushroom does have good lightfastness, but it also depends on how you take care of your fiber after you dye it. You could try using the dye water again. It will likely give a lighter shade. Great questions!

And if they aren't in the reservation -- which there are many of here in NJ -- it wouldn't be anywhere, I don't think. We have Cortinarius caperatus. Does that one dye?

I think we don't have those here in NJ. They're not listed as being in the South Mountain reservation. There is one Cortinarius, but I think it isn't one of the dye ones.

Oh I wish! That was our plan, however we left the sample outside to dry and it somehow disappeared. Perhaps from the wind or a critter? I can tell you that the samples from the two jars on the right (that turned a pale yellow) didn't seem to dye the yarn.

With Cortinarius mushrooms, do you have to worry about identification with regards to avoiding the really poisonous ones? Or is it not a concern, since you're just using them to extract pigment?
@MyraMadeColor
@MyraMadeColor Жыл бұрын
I believe it's only a concern if you were going to eat them - which I don't recommend!! Extracting the pigment should be fine. This is also why we keep dyeing material and supplies away from the kitchen.
