I’ve hated the notion of a pilot hole for a long time. I have made many great hammers without a pilot. However, I have come to appreciate the idea lately. It gives more than a good chance of centering the eye. I also embrace hand forging. But I always do as much as possible under a powerhammer. Including punching the eye. I’m old. I’m mad. And I detest work that my tools can do for me. Nils just showed us excellent work!

Fantastic work as usual Nils, even before you mentioned it I was thinking “wow, clean lines and great symmetry”. Well Hammer-time is pretty much what smithing is, either hand held or mechanical, there is a hammer involved somewhere. These hammers are up there with the axes you make, all functional and all things of beauty.

I don't need a hammer-at-this-time so I'm sitting this one out. I don't really care what you make, so make what you need or want. It's just relaxing to watch the bright hot metal go darker and darker as you shape it it, and have the process repeat until "the thing" has emerged from it's hiding inside a basic shape. It was there all the time but it took flames and hammer strokes to lure it out. Same reason I watch Thorbjörn's channel.

Hammertime! Nice video, beautiful hammer. I am a weekend blacksmith/bladesmith, and all my hammers are modified cheapo hammers. My most recent is a hardware store ball pean hammer, where I flattened, then twisted the hammer head, to create a diagonal pean. It's a little smaller than I would have liked, but it turned out great. It would be awesome to have a quality hammer so I hope I am the lucky one chosen.

Hammers, tongs, punches, etc. I would love to see you create a full sized anvil someday!
