Here's a process showing how I reveal the pattern in this blade forged from thousands of layers of alloys fused together to create this pattern, in which the acid exposes the intricate damascus steel pattern I forged with a 4.5 billion year old meteorite iron integrated into the blade.
The meteorite iron I used is Muonionalusta meteorite iron that comes from near the small village of Kitkiöjärvi, which was discovered in 1906. It has survived nearly 4 ice ages, and is dated to be one of the oldest meteorites ever recorded. Dating to be older than the Earth itself, it comes from a planetoid that was once apart of the parent body of our solar system.
Meteorite iron, naturally, is a very brittle and fragile iron. The reason being is partly due to its high impurities content, with little to no carbon or manganese... To combat that, I essentially needed to find a way to forge this blade with meteorite, whilst still maintaining a strong, durable and sharp integrity of the blade. To do this, I used high-carbon steel 15n20/ 1084, which I forged and crafted the layers of the damascus steel (or pattern-welded steel) into a mosaic pattern that would look very organic, whilst still preserving the natural Widmanstatten structure of the meteorite. This structure is the crystal formation of the meteorite iron molecularly separating the iron from the nickel, formed from cooling over billions of years in the vacuum of space. This pattern cannot be replicated by any technological process in our lifetime, and our main goal was to preserve this to be as natural as possible.
For those interested in purchasing a blade from me, please visit my website or sign up for my mailing list at tristandareshop.com.

Isn't it very hard to make something out of meteorite? With all the impurities and things not welding and so on... I dunno tho, Alex Steel was having a hard time.
@TristanDare
@TristanDare Жыл бұрын
Very… Meteorite naturally is very brittle, and a very impure alloy on its own. It also lacks a % of carbon/ manganese to make it a workable steel for a blade. For this piece we used the Muonionalusta meteorite, which is more pure than the Canpo Del Cielo meteorite Alec used, but it still poses a lot of problems during that forging process. So to fix that we needed to forge it with other pure alloys, such as Damascus steel (or pattern welded steel). That also excludes the processes involved just to preserve that natural crystalline structure in the meteorite forging, so we can preserve it to remain in its most natural state possible. I have about 5 years experience with this material, and I’m still learning something new each time I work with it!

It took about 4 billion years for organic matter to transition from the earliest organic molecules, through the age of microbes and single celled organisms, to the synapsids, the dinosaurs and all the other incredible creatures that have graced the surface of this planet....all to culminate in us. I feel more sorry for those early organisms than I do for the meteorite. Least the knife doesn't have to pay taxes.

@@joshbarber3931 “parts of space we don’t know exist”… and will never know. To get here the star that formed it had to go supernova… and the light from that supernova would have got here well before the carbon and other elements we are made of… so we’ll never see that star. Yes, it’s cool to think about. And if you think that’s interesting, you should try sitting on top of a volcano that is active. Seeing the explosive eruptions and witnessing that has been going somewhere on the planet for as long as the earth has been cooling. If you ever get a chance, and want to really feel your place, that will help do it. Sitting a couple hundred metres from that, is humbling and will make you contemplate a lot. Try Tanna Island in Vanuatu. Best experience of my life.
