Awesome video, as usual! Couple of tricks with MiniFreak modulations 1. There are 3 pages of 3 assignable destinations, so it's possible to assign 9 custom destinations total. To switch between pages, hold "Shift" and click the "Page" number. 2. It's possible to make modulation source to modulate modulation amount - to do that, hold "Assign" button and move "Matrix/Amount" position to the needed destination. 3. For Velocity/AT modulation source, it's possible to select either both or any of them - to do that, press "Sound Edit" button, then scroll to "Keyboard", and then "Matrix Src". There will be "Velocity", "Aftertouch", "Velo + AT". The last one is the default and will be modulating depending on key velocity, but adding more when pushing for aftertouch. Hope it will be helpful

You have such an amazing grasp of the nature of your sound and what will impact it, in what precise way, with the tools at your disposal. I learn something insane, every time I watch your sound design on any synth. That keyboard reverse modulation to affect only the high notes was exactly how you go above and beyond to give each tone that final coat of varnish. And as if it wasn't enough, you keep tweaking to just the right texture. Thanks, very well done.

re: quick way to initialize a patch, I think you can just click down and hold on the preset knob for a couple of seconds.

re:17.15 Under SoundEdit>Preset there is a snapshot feature that lets you undo to previous patches if you just opened up new one. I kept hitting the white knob all the time making patches the first week I had it!

17:17 Oh no, you didn't know that you can recover from deleting your patch! Press Sound Edit and go to the last menu option "Presets", then "View Snapshots" and select from a bunch of timestamped save states to restore!

Great vid, thanks! And in case anyone is wondering, you can delete the macro settings and start new by holding down the preset selector knob for 2 seconds and the setting you’re on will go blank. You can do this for one, or all selections and start fresh, in case you choose something you didn’t like. :)

Minifreak is awesome and sounds great. The screen with the three "vials or bottles filling up" instead of an animation of real-time wave activity is a shame though. You spend a surprising amount of time looking at those three vials and trying to listen to hear what your doing to the sound.

That's true, I wonder what difference in sound we would choose if we had the waveform though. I have a tendency to use round numbers. a completely arbitrary preference. But those decimals matter! Kind of like mixing on an MPC vs using EQ8 in Ableton Live haha

Very nice to watch man, I've been looking at the Minifreak as a first hardware synth, the way you explain matrix answers a lot of questions, using Ableton Wavetable and this just opened a world of possibilities

yes Ableton's Wavetable is a great way to learn the mod matrix of almost any synthesizer. that's where all the magic happens!

Regarding "I'm Stumped" : first assign lfo to pitch but with 0 amount. Then go to the aft/velocity row and over to the "assign 1" slot, hold down the button and turn the encoder until you get LFO->Pitch. then set with encoder. press the Sound Edit button, scroll to "Keyboard" there you can set velocity or aftertouch or both as the modulation source on the matrix.

You would love the Hydrasyth Explorer . You can go as far as you want with mapping modulation. And you have the visual on screen

Cool video, if you're missing a third envelope you can set up one of the LFOs to be an envelope as well. It's a bit clunky but you can definitely make it work.

​@@tavaresvideoeditorIt's an adjustment from normal sized keys but not too bad. I only know a little bit about the keyboard, so maybe to a pianist it would be harder to use. The more limiting factor is only having 3 octaves, but that's the only way it comes unfortunately.

Even quicker way to get an INIT patch…..save it! For whatever reason, this synth still hasn’t grabbed me. I wonder how it compares in terms of the “not being able to take your hands off it” factor? I just got an OPsix and I swear it just makes me want to play it and tweak for hours! And it’s one of the few synths of the many I have had over the decades that I took immediately as far as learning the ins and outs of it so quickly. So much so that the Prophet Rev2 I bought just prior to the OPsix-I have touched in weeks!

I suggest you watch Bloom Music's 'De-freaking the Arturia minifreak' video which gets into the weeds of making classic style synth tones on the device. It's a really powerful device capable of making some incredible sounds and there's not really much that competes with it given its price point. The build quality is great too, and super intuitive for tone crafting.

​@@MrMb167agreed, this dude is tripping. The Minifreak and the Keystep Pro are amazing. I just updated the firmware in both last night, and don't have any issues. To the op, what kind of bugs are you experiencing? If it seems as if it's glitching out on you, as if the power supply isn't working properly, that may be caused by the inefficiency of the power grid where you live. I had this problem in Panama City Beach, Florida and contacted support, and the dude told me that people in New York were having that same problem. I'm currently in a different state, and haven't had this problem at all. I actually purchased it used from this company (BH Photo) out of New York City for a little over $400 not long after it first released. I assume that whoever had it before me, thought it was bugged out as well, and that's why I got it for so cheap. I believe the remedy to this is some sort of power conditioner, but I'm not acclimated enough to say for certain. What I can say is . . . I love both my Keystep Pro and my Minifreak very much, and will definitely be acquiring more gear from Arturia. I heard a rumor of some sort of drum machine in a similar context to the Minifreak. A DrumFreak, if you will. Whatever that entails. Either way, I can't wait.
