Nice seeing you at the supercharger today. We hope you and Joan have a safe and fun trip. And we appreciate the relatable family content. Lunch is on us today.

Wow, thanks so much Aaron! It was great seeing you and your family at the charger. Sorry I'm just seeing this now. We got home last night and I've been cleaning/sorting since. The trip was epic and I can't wait to share the footage. Thanks again!

Glad to see your brother again, and I love how he spends a lot of time with Joan. You should make another trip to Wisconsin again soon! They just opened up a supercharger in Prairie du Chien, and the Effigy Mounds National Monument is nearby. Can get great views of the Mississippi River from there, although it is quite a climb at the beginning. But well worth the trip.

Yeah, he's Joan's favorite for sure. Dad's pretty boring by comparison. 😄 Sounds like a cool trip, I'll see when we can fit it in. Thanks for the suggestion!

Excellent! You've really amped up the production quality, I like the banners with the travel information at the chargers. Only other comment is that you didn't introduce your brother!

Thanks! My brother’s a relatively private guy and isn’t too crazy about being on camera, so I try to respect that and not focus on him too much. I had to keep his jokes in though and all the playing with Joan at the stops, so he’s in this one a lot.

Great video. We're looking forward to stopping at the new Marshall, MN supercharger on our way to visit Kari and family in Savage, MN. We need Superchargers in Pierre and Redfield, SD to make the trip the way we used to drive it in the Subaru. I love to drive the two lane roads and see rural SD and MN.

Thanks Virgil!I hope more SD superchargers show up soon. We just had another great lunch at the Windmill today!

It’s really surprising how the charging experience has changed for Teslas in the past 5 years. It used to be that you would need to charge 45 minutes to an hour just to make your next charging stop. By default, this gave you plenty of time to use nearby services or casually eat. Now, thanks too faster charging speeds and locations so much closer together, you have to plan for making longerg stops. It’s no longer a requirement in most places. In many ways the charging required for your trip is done before you are ready to continue yourself. This can expose you to idle fees if you lose track of time, however there are tricks to avoid that like setting the maximum charging level to 100 and overriding the 80% automatically set at high use superchargers. Just remember to reset lower otherwise you may accidentally forget and find your vehicle at 100% parked in your garage for an extended period ( not good for the pack unless you have LFP cells)
@brianriebedriveselectric Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's been a big change. On our road trip last week we did that 100% trick and needed every bit of it at a couple stops because we took so long.

I was glad you identified the other passenger as your brother. Until you did, I thought he may be that hitchhiker from Skokie you spoke about in your last video.🤣

🤣 He is my brother, but he’s also hitched a ride or two in his day.

Nice video. I like that you put in your stats. The Model Y is really a 280-300Wh/mi car; it's next to impossible to come close to long-term averaging the "rated" 245Wh/mi. A 320 mile range is unrealistic, more like 250, especially if you are only planning to use 80% of the battery capacity. But, like your videos show, with a robust charging network the Model Y is a good road trip car. Waiting (hoping) for you to travel up North to International Fall or Virginia or Cook to report on the opening of a new Supercharger there.
@brianriebedriveselectric Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, I've thought about trying to max out the range and go slow on some of these country roads, but I'm always either in a hurry, or don't want to be the electric car holding up locals as they're going about their day. Like you said though, the supercharger network makes it easy to travel. Now that the southern part of the state is pretty well covered I hope we see more across the north!

That's interesting. I don't have the convenience of Superchargers, so knowing real-world efficiency is definitely useful. I took my first road trip up north last week (to Nisswa, 171 miles each way) in my bZ4X. It's the AWD model rated for 3.0 mi/kWh and I figured that's what I would get, especially using the A/C. The measured kWh consumption (total reported by the chargers) was 96.181 kWh. That calculates to 3.56 mi/kWh, which includes charging losses.
@daviddennis5789 Жыл бұрын
@@john1701a 3.0mi/kWh is fairly inefficient, your 3.56 figure is comparable to the Model Y. I'm surprised Toyota would put out a 3.0 number as "rated", especially considering how much better you seem to have done. Like I posted, on average, the Model Y is not a "4.0 mi/kWh car ", yet Tesla (and the 320 mile EPA range) infer it.
@daviddennis5789 Жыл бұрын
btw, how do you like the bZ4X? My 2008 Prius has been a great car. Toyota should have come out with it's pure EV sooner.
@john1701a Жыл бұрын
@daviddennis5789 That's they way they do business. The better than expected results are what stirs their best promotion tool, owner endorsements. And for such a boxy design and high ground-clearance, that's a decent outcome.
