Years ago I was pumping gas at garage when I was kid. The local police always filled up there. One day the police officer went an used the bathroom blocking the pump up. Without thinking I jumped in a pulled it forward into a parking spot. Didn't think about til I see the cop running out of the bathroom gun drawn and his pants down around his ankles... he thought it was being stolen. I got a bit of a chewing out. Made it worse cause I couldn't stop laughing... Edit.. it was the 80s and yes cops left keys in cars!

Giving me flashbacks to when i worked at a shop that did fleet service on 29 police vehicles. The explorer was just coming on the scene back then and the cops hated them compared to the crown Vic. I wonder if that’s changed.

The crown Vic was liked so much because of the bench seat up front had more room, no center console. In essence it just had more room. It was a bigger vehicle. The long lead time to get the interceptors and less room has lead many police and fire to switch to the Tahoe police/fire model.

Also PROTIP with the PTU. You can fill it from the breather vent. Take off the breather vent cap. Take a 5/16 male/male hose barb and attach it to where the vent cap came from, use a 5/16 (8mm) ID fuel hose. Attach that to a funnel and fill from the top of the engine bay. It's slow but it beats pulling cats and stuff.

Go to Lowes and pick up a rubber stopper drill a hole in it and push the hose threw it, it will help with leakage around the hose. Here you would have to cover the light bar with a cover that says out of service in order to test drive the police vehicle. You are pretty lucky to be able to work on a police vehicle. The police have there own shop here, they only go back to the dealership for warranty work.

There should be a fill plug for PTU. I had mine done without any removing of parts. earlier models lacked a drain plug it was suction and refill up to plug (similar to rear). You should be selling a PTU fluid change on every Ford with a PTU. They are prone to failure with people that fail to change it regularly.

Police ones, there is no fill plug. They have a temp sensor in the fill plug hole. You can pull the temp sensor and fill through that, but there is no room with the cat in the way. As his tech support mentioned, I fill them through the vent tube and estimate the fluid level. Its about 1/2 a quart of 75w140. Civilian Explorers/Taurus, there is no drain. I drill a hole in the bottom of them and retap with NPT pipe tap. Put a plug in it, and fill them up through the fill plug and use one of those new capri sun style lube bottles they sell now adays.

I used to porter at a Chevy dealer and the local police had a new fleet of squad cars that needed their speedo's calibrated. I had to drive them from the dealer to a speed shop that could certify the speedo's. It was great running on the freeway at 55 and watching all the cars in the fast lane jamming on their brakes. No one would pass me. The best part was my service uniform was the same color as the police, but only a few observant drivers figured out I wasn't a cop because of my long hair and casually rolled past me.

Seeing your wife work with you brought back a funny memory of when my wife and I were younger (1979) I was rebuilding a chevy 350 van and needed to turn the engine to # 1 cylinder on compression. So I asked her to put her finger in the plug hole until the pressure in the cylinder pushed it out. Engine was still in van BTW) I'm turning and turning and nothing no blast of air comes out. She then says "shouldn't my finger fill the entire hole"???? DAH!!!! anyway keep up the good work.

I lived in a small country town with only one cop shop. I loved servicing the police vehicles. You had to make sure that everything worked, so of course, you "tested' everything, including, all the bells and whistles, and of course, you had to know that the tune and power was good for pursuits.. I leave the rest to your imagination! 🙂 At last the local station got a new vehicle, long overdue. Then the cops from the next town, a hundred miles away, alerted that a speeding vehicle was coming our way, and the suspect was wanted for violent assault as well. I can't remember the odometer reading, but it wasn't more than a few dozen miles. It broke the cop's heart, because after the pursuit the rig was a piece of junk. It burnt just as much oil as gas. The engine was rebuilt, but even after that, the vehicle was a real dog. To be fair, the engine performed quite well, because he could have easily put a piston through the side of the block. I never ceases to amaze my about vehicle designers and engineers who think it is a fun idea to not provide servicing ports on important components. No drain plug on the diff? WTF? Or the fill port inaccessible? Or an oxygen sensor that requires the vehicle to be almost torn apart to do a job that should take 5 minutes? Or inaccessible spark plugs and injectors. Or silly design of the serpentine belt system. Or a hundred other stupidities. Maybe it is about hoping that the mechanic/owner will not bother to change the fluids, and the drive train will fail, and then they can sell you some expensive parts, and charge huge amounts of labor to replace them? And all those special tools? Most are unnecessary. And it places an unfair financial burden on independent mechanics.

It showed me where to drill a hole in the pto unit, tap the hole for a 1/2” NPT plug. The fill plug is located up high on the side. Ah all the other mechanic shops called the cops on Ray for being such an honest service technician. Love the work ya do. I just replaced the brakes on my 2017 ram, paid a guy $110 per axle, I supply the parts. This guy is honest and I now know what to look for after watching these videos. He made sure I was completely satisfied with his work before charging me. He doesn't have a shop he just does it in his large home garage with a family of mechanics. I paid $470 total with all 4 pads, rotors, and installation. My dad has the exact same make and model and year pickup truck that I do. 2 years ago he was charged over $1000 for rear only rotors and all 4 pads. I think I got a good deal, I watched the whole process. He also told me that the boot on my passenger side CV is blown. Told me that I don't need to replace it right away since it just happened a few days before he saw it but to definitely get it done, he will do it. He told me that once it starts clicking, it's time. But being that I am always up to date on maintenance and services, I plan on getting it done before then. I guess I just wanted to say that I appreciate the honest work you do Ray and I'm glad that there are other mechanics out there like you. I mean there is only one Ray with the goofiness lol.

Dating myself…one of the best cruisers ever built was the 1992-1996 Chevrolet Caprice and the ultimate best was the 1994-1996 versions with the LT1 police package. Quick, nimble and quite powerful along with comfortable and spacious…my local department had 6 of the latter models, even had two completely refurbished and they lasted over 200,000 miles, when sold the auction price was crazy high. Liked them so much I found myself a ‘94 with the baby V8 4.3 liter engine.

Back when I was 20, I had an actual encounter with a police helicopter. It was turned out to be a retaliatory display as I was closing a business. The night before, there was a robbery across the street, and unknowingly I took off after closing and inadvertently outran the police. I got the full show of force the next night.

Way back in 1992 I was visiting relatives in North Carolina from Michigan in my pickup that equipped with lights and siren for the volunteer Fire Dept and I worked at, took it in for service at a local Chevy dealer and the first thing that happened when they got it in the service stall…they lit it up and played with the siren. The look on there faces when that 100 watt siren speaker came to life was worth the admission price. The service advisor came to me and apologized up and down for them doing that. I said don’t worry, I would have done the same thing…

My closest experience was driving a car that was exactly the year, model and color and had very similar license plate (off by one letter I think) to one of unmarked police cars. Yes, it drew unwanted attention. Especially so near spots where police tended to do stay.

On your suction/pump machine, a tapered rubber stopper that could slide up and down around the tube might help with the hurry up, run down the arm mess. Great vids as always, like when Lauren gets involved.

Two suggestions 1 when pulling drain plugs or lower radiator hose tie a rag around your wrist to keep fluids from running down your arm 2 to fill those power transfer cases a small piece of tube with appropriate size fitting will allow full fluid install and install plug at your leisure Glad to see you are hetting some municipal work,it usually pays good but waiting for po to be paid by .gov can be 30-60+

You underfilled the PTO. A quart is 32 oz, not 28. Also, a considerable amount of new fluid spilled out of the hole designed for removing fluid before you swapped the hose for the plug. I hope the unit does not fail during a pursuit.

In all the years of working on gas turbine engines and anything else for that matter I don't believe that I've ever filled anything through the drain plug. A good portion of fluid did spill and from what I understand Ford PTUs are prone to failure. I would strongly suggest revisiting this procedure to ensure that the correct amount of fluid has been added.

@@stefanpuffer They don't short it out, they can be 'misread' though as Ray noted. The lack of resistance from an LED gets misinterpreted as a burnt out/missing bulb. Having the canbus decoders inline solves that issue and can eliminate flickering that is common with them.

Way back in the golden years of the 1970's I worked at a local service station. Since I live between the patrol post and the station, I was elected a couple times to return the state patrol car to the post after hours. They had the practice of removing the breakers from all the lights and sirens. It was pretty exciting being 18 years old driving those silver beasts.

Ha ha I have a 2013 Interceptor Sedan (Taurus) first time I did the PTU service I pulled the drain plug and nothing came out. I had to jab I pick in the drain hole to break up all the crap plugging the hole. It was bad clumps of metal shavings. I have serviced it a few times since. Fluid is always black and metallic. Ironically it still seems to be working fine. I did buy another PTU (used with 18,000 miles on it) so when it does decide to take a crap, or whenever I decide replace, it I have it on hand.
