Panasonic only did one VCR that converts, the NW-W1 (European model number, the US one could be AG-W1 or AG-W3). It's easily recognisable by a world map on the front, and it can indeed output any analogue video standard from any tape by selecting a button. Working ones go for several hundred, even broken ones fetch good money for the spare parts. A seller who would sell one of those for just a few dollars wouldn't know what he's doing. The one in the video isn't a W1 obviously. It's one for the European market which also plays NTSC for imported tapes. About why NTSC is shown in b&w only see other comments.

Here in Brazil, every VCR used to work with PAL-M and NTSC. The analog TV transmission standard here was PAL-M. That's why every VCR had a switch or button to select PAL-M or NTSC. The newer models were operated through a remote control. ;-)

14:38 That is gunk from the automatic "Head Cleaning" sponge, which in these Magnavox units is a small, round yellow sponge like roller which quickly taps the head (supposedly cleaning it a bit), before and after each tape insert. Over time, they degrade and fill with gunk, causing it to actually place dirt onto the head rather than cleaning it. Then, your tape goes around that head which got the gunk on it, making gunk go onto the tape.

@@EmeraldCoastDigitizingIIRC, the VCR records an index pulse in the control track every time it encounters a brief black screen while recording. When done recording, it rewinds while monitoring the control track. Every time it encounters an index pulse close to the last one, it also records a "skip this many indexes" signal. Then when it plays back, anytime it encounters a "skip this many indexes" signal, it fast-forwards through that many indexes, thus skipping the commercials. Now, this next part is a guess, but I assume that when dubbing to a second tape, the recording pauses while the auto-fast-forwarding is happening on the playback deck, effectively omitting the commercials entirely from the copy.

Hi, greetings from Argentina, sorry if my english is not so good. The only way you can see it in full color it´s if the VCR allow you to switch the VCR from PAL to NTSC (manually or automatically). An NTSC VHS in a PAL VCR will always look black and white, and a PAL VHS in an NTSC VCR will always look black and white, so the TV Display doesn´t matter. NTSC VHS only plays in full color in NTSC VCR FORMAT, and PAL VHS will always plays in full color in PAL VCR FORMAT. I appologize again if what i say can´t be understanded, because english is not my natural language. :)
@PabloPerez-ix9tj10 ай бұрын
So what i mean it´s that VCR only setting is PAL format, NTSC VHS with NTSC VCR setting on an NTSC TV will always look fine. What i see there it´s an NTSC VHS in an only PAL format VCR, on an NTSC TV. So if the VCR doesn´t allow you to change format you only have a PAL VCR.

NEVER THROW AWAY VCRs OF ANY KIND reasons why, once these machines are gone there gone forever, they dont make them anymore. also -those vcrs are not broken, the servo control mode switch is dirty, super easy to fix. and a very common issue especially when vcrs sit for a long time. -not a head issue try the tracking knob and buttons not all vcrs have auto tracking plus some vcrs have a auto head cleaner and it gums up, removal is required, easy fix -rewind not broken, the machine is determining tape position so it can fast rewind or slow rewind. can also be a mode switch issue -the black and white is due to the vcr set into pal and not ntsc also beating a vcr is not going to fix it. eating of the tapes is due to a dirty mode switch or bad belt easy to fix mono vcrs are not crap there quite useful because most home video camcorders record in monaural audio I WANT ALL THOSE VCRS i can fix them all.

Some VCR's will not work properly with the lid off as the light sensor in them gets triggered so maybe that was the issue with some of them. Still, nice haul. Even though I will never need a VHS ever again, whenever I see them my nostalgia hits hard! I used to fix these things back in the 80's and 90's!I was surprised that you never tested out the DVD parts on the ones with DVD players/recorders as they are definitely more prone to going bad. And I think you should try and get them fixed. That maybe a lost cause. But then it's cost over profit I guess. The only other problem of course is no remotes. Most people want the remotes nowadays.

You never heard of sansui? I guess if you aren't an audio guy. They had some of the best stereo equipment of the 60's and 70's. My AU-717 is the heart of my stereo/CRT home theater setup.

That RCA deck is actually a DVD recorder as well, probably why it needs a power cord hooked up to it!
