An element of this movie that hit home for my sisters and me was Ralphie losing his father so soon before Christmas. The same thing happened to us three years ago. The first Christmas without a loved one is difficult enough as it is but when it is just a little over a week after their passing it's all the more a struggle. I can tell you too how bittersweet it is to open presents and read the cards from your recently departed loved one. It's heartbreaking but at the same time makes you feel like they have pulled through for you one last time.

I lost both my parents around 2 holidays. My mother after the 4th of July, she passed away on the 11th in 2016. My father before Thanksgiving on the 22nd in 2019. And just like Ralphie, I accepted the family monarch status since I'm the only boy in my family. Albeit the younger child of 3. I have a daughter of my own who is 6 years old. Unfortunately my wife passed away June 3, 2016, a month and 8 days before my mother. I cry for my loved ones around the holidays, I'm human after all. Life hasn't been kind but I press on for my daughters sake.

Disagree. The idea that a 40ish man with a wife and kids keeps his BB gun (where? by his bedside?) is... kinda silly. Nope. They gave a LOT of thought about 1) to show the gun and 2) where/how. What they showed was a way to make the audience happy but not seem absurd. Ralphie still toting a BB gun around at age 42 (or, more implausibly making it into some cherished item. Maybe a shrine? didn't the father throw the leg lamp in the trash in the first movie because the mom broke it? I don't like sequel's that much it's not the same.
@hunterolaughlin Жыл бұрын
He only threw it in the trash in the short story “My Old Man and the Lascivious Special Award That Heralded the Birth of Pop Art” from “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash”. In the film adaptation, author Jean Shepherd rewrote it to be played it more serious like a funeral with him as the voice of Adult Ralphie saying, “The Old Man, with as much dignity as he could muster, gathered up the sad remains of his major award. Then later, he buried it, next to the garage. That night, I could have sworn I heard the faith sounds of taps playing slowly.” It’s treated more dramatically in the film version compared to the book, showcasing more of his attachment to the Leg Lamp where he gives it a proper sendoff whereas in the book he just merely throws the remains out in the garbage afterwards like any other ordinary broken lamp.
