Dairy cattle are generally pampered. Even if you disregard caring about the animals themselves, it just makes sense from a business standpoint. Cattle raised for slaughter for beef don't generally get the same level of care for a multitude of reasons.

Dry stone walling is a lovely rural craft to watch. There are quite a few people doing it these days still. Farms with walls like these need constant upkeep, since as the name suggests, there is no mortar involved, just skill and judgement. But what a beautiful sight! It arose out of practical necessity: clearing the stones from the pasture. Then what to do with them? Why not use them to keep the livestock in place? Probably been going on here for many thousands of years.

I grew up in a small village. The local sheep farmer had 2 cows that he milked for the family and he sold what was left over to the locals. (That was 30+ years ago... I think his last cow was put down due to illness so 25 years ago) My granddad would go every morning at 04.30 to get our milk 'bucket' filled (do not knoq the english word for the old metal containers used for storing milk in). Both my brother and I grew up on raw milk. The whole family drank only raw milk until I was 14, umtil we moved away from the village. I know many people who have had their frist try of raw milk as adults and 60-70 % of them have had an upset stomach afterwards. Those who have stuck with it had minor stomack rumblings for 1 - 2 weeks and then everything was normal... but most of those are dead set agaist anything not 'as nature intended', so I take what they say with a grain of salt 😉😁

Really interesting to see a dairy farmer vertically integrated to supply milk to a village and to make cheese. This should be the model for value-added dairy farming. This is how a specialty small dairy farmer can beyond selling milk into the supply chain to being closer to their customers.

My best friend's family has a dairy farm and they rebuilt the barn to new standards utilizing the latest technology. Cows get milked when they want, go to cleaning stations when they feel like it, come in and out when possible (Canadian climate here), and enjoy the summer outside. It's amazing to see how dairy producers are often criticized by people who have never bothered to actually enquire about what really goes on there. Thank you for sharing such amazing people who devote their entire lives to animals, including yourself, to the general public. Without you, they would have remained ignorant about what dairy farming truly is.

I grew up on a small dairy farm in North Central , IL, USA. We only milked around 18 cows and we named all of our cows after members of our family. I loved all the cows and so did my dad. I didn't know any farmers in our area who didn't take great care with their cows , sheep, hogs, and even chickens! You have to love it if it is your chosen career!

When I was a child growing up, ALL of the local dairy farmers would sell to the local folks, IF they wanted to buy it. Today there are no farms that I know of in this state that are willing to sell the raw milk to the public. There have been too many frivolous lawsuits, & the farmers are scared of those EXPENSIVE situations. For them it's just better to sell to the local creameries. There was one farm left that their whole business was selling raw milk. EVERYTHING they produced was sold fresh from the farm to consumers. The state of Washington made it so difficult for them to do business that the family decided to quit farming!

I have friends in the state of Colorado USA, where they bought a “share” of a cow. They can now get raw milk since it is from a cow they own and not purchasing raw milk. A loophole, but a fair one, since you have to know the farmer.

We don't in the US because most states have laws about selling unpasteurized milk. He said pasteurization in the vid, but that was homogenization, breaking down the fat globules so they are suspended, not floating to the top. Pasteurization is quickly heating then cooling the milk so as to kill bacteria. It's a sterilization process. [BTW, they do that with beer in the US as well. That is why the head of imported beers is not as creamy or long lasting for imported beers in the US. After pasteurization, they inject CO2 to make it foam again.] If milk is not sterilized [pasteurized], it cannot be sold commercially in the US. There are farms where people buy fresh, whole, unpasteurized milk. In some states for sale at the farm only or a certain distance from the outlet to reduce spoilage. Other states allow people to consume unpasteurized milk from their **own** cows. So the farmer sells shares of ownership for the cows and the consumer goes to pick up his own milk. Sort of a time-share milk supply. Multiple people own one cow. Not the same in the UK I guess. He sells fresh while milk direct from the farm.

@@ricoludovici2825 At 7:16, they DO say that it is pasteurized to kill the bacteria as well as homogenized. So, while being extremely fresh - it is also both p&h.
