That was a nice trip down memory lane. You've come a long way Steve, and I think it's safe to say, your mom would be proud of her youngest boy, & all of his accomplishments along the way. Here's to the next 40-years, and many more memories to make! Merry Christmas, & have a Safe & Happy New Year. :)

When my wife's grandma passed we found two big suitcases in her house packed with photographs. Some as far back as when she was a little kid in Oklahoma in the 1920 up to when she passed in 1989. Wife's mom and her three uncles spent a good number of days looking through those pictures, only marks were where some photos had the date they were printed on them. And it was tough. Most of them they couldn't figure out, or maybe a guess like "That looks like the Colorado house's back yard." A lot of that could have been avoided, but that's not how grandma rolled.

That's awesome Bill. I always tell people to write the names of people in the photo even if it's obvious to you now, it won't be to those alive in a few decades.

My grandmother had a closet full of photo albums. Everyone always sat and went through the photo albums dating back to the 50’s. When she passed my aunts went through the albums and mailed every photo to each family member that they were in.

I love the subject of this video. Especially on Christmas. Heartwarming. After my dad passed away, my sister and I were removing personal items before the estate sale. One of them was a framed photo of my grandmother (dad's mom) gave my dad of him at around age 1 or so, at his first haircut, with a lock of his hair taped to the photo. I was carrying too much and accidentally dropped it. The frame came apart but the photo wasn't damaged, however I saw something that had been slipped into the frame behind the photo. It was a letter my dad wrote to his mom when he was 8 and she was working several hundred miles away (It was during WW2 and there was a worker shortage) telling her what he wanted for Christmas. I wondered if my dad ever knew that letter was in there.

That brings back memories of my budget busting AMC Pacer. I didn't earn much as a file clerk at an insurance claims office, and that car, while great to drive, was constantly needing all the failing Ford parts replaced. After bumming rides for nearly a month, and having paid for a fuel pump, and various other parts as solutions to the reoccurring problem of the engine just cutting out while going down the road, restarting impossible, I wound up calling KDKA radio’s Call For Action help line to get the mechanics to fix my car. It worked! Turns out, it was rust inside the gas tank clogging up the filters. It was amazing how quickly the problem was solved after the station stepped in for me. It was tough being a young woman dealing with mechanics back then. Thanks to your mum for today's story, and, Merry Christmas 🎄.

Excellent! I worked for a couple years at a small AM radio station from '71-'76 with time off for a couple years military service (I got drafted!) during the tail of the Vietnam War. I did learn a lot not just about radio but about balancing going to school on GI Bill benefits of $270/month in 1975 and working one shift each weekend day at the station. Independence is the lesson you and I both learned from radio.

You reminded me of when I was stationed at the former Empire Air Force Station (now part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes property with an FAA radar on site). There were land lines that communicated data to higher headquarters that would occasionally be interrupted by severe weather and we would have to reconnect via a patch panel. When one re-established contact, one would get a recording from a switching station that said “This is Roscommon Michigan; half way between Hell and Paradise “.

That picture was taken when I was 40 years old. My wife and I listened to the nearby stations and WJR Detroit when we lived in Melvin, Michigan in the thumb of Michigan. Melvin was so small then, people would count the number of people, number of dogs and cats, and the two giant work horses in a field across from our house when saying how many lived there. They were proud of the fact there was a very good golf course east of the village. People from Detroit area and from Canada would visit just to play golf there.

I still remember the feeling the first time I opened my cupboard in the self catering kitchen at college, and found it was empty, because I hadn't done any shopping. That's getting on for nearly 50 years ago now. That's also where I first learnt how to make a meal out of whatever odd bits happened to be left in the cupboard. 🙂

That's a cool story. Also, condolences about your mom. I can relate to exactly what you are saying when you talk about how your lifes pathway had some common threads and how experiences built on one another to get you where you are today. It was the same for me. I did some grunt jobs but in doing so I gained experience that made me much more successful in jobs later in life. It was because I had that knowledge and experiences that I could excel. It does kind of make a person think that things happen for a reason.

I Bought this stuff being adventurous long thin sticks no packet instructions like today. Everything was boiled to death from cold in those days. So into cold water, gas high, 30 minutes later I had invented glue totally impossible to remove - pan into the bin .
