Tail of the Dragon is one of the best roads in the world to drive when it comes to corners, handling speeds, and much more. However theres another road not as well known - Back of the Dragon. We hop in this 2018 Mustang GT and take on Back of the Dragon and give a little in depth tour. Rally North America led us to this place and we couldn't be more thankful to come across this road in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. We tried following our friend Aaron in his R35 GTR but it was not even worth the effort since he went full Initial D. Thanks for watching!

Not a back road neccisarily, but I'd like to go down Blue Ridge Parkway or Cherohola Skyway, or the Great River Road. All three sound like fun.

Ran the Dragon a few months ago and I prefer State route 180 in Georgia over the Dragon any day. It's only five miles of hellish turns but man is it a blast. Then you run down Blood Mountain to finish it all off. Hardly no traffic on 180. Lots of fantastic roads right here in Georgia

Wow! I rode Tail of the Dragon for the first time this year on my CBR and plan to take the FR-S up there soon. After watching this, I might have to hit up the Back as well. That looks amazing, and I'm digging the minimal traffic!

I live about 2.5 hours from Back of the Dragon. It is a great road and if you continue up RT 16 into WV the roads continue to be awesome! Also once you hit the southern end of Back of the Dragon which is Marion VA, continue on towards Grayson Highlands Park and then to Damascus and Abingdon Va (can't remember the route names) there are equally good roads there.

I had the same issue on the O2 sensors for my GTO. I eventually bought some weather wrap (think heat wrap but smaller) and wrapped the wires in that. I also got a harness extension, which helps a ton when the exhaust flexes.

A huge plus of the Tail of the Dragon, is that it’s morally acceptable to mob as fast as possible. Most all other roads, it’s looked down upon and you’re more likely to get pulled over. Just go to the Tail of the Dragon at a less busy time, not too difficult.

I live 5 minutes from the entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway and for anyone thinking about going driving up there: the speed limit along the entire thing is 35 MPH and it is strictly enforced. For good reason too. Deer and friggin bears WILL walk out in front of you. They're all conditioned to be comfortable around humans and cars so they have no sense of danger and they treat the roads like any other part of the forest. Since the road is just one hair pin curve after another you WILL NOT have enough time to stop when there's a forest creature around the bend and you're going even 45 mph. So just a heads up guys, visit, enjoy the views and the nature trails, but don't expect to bomb it like any other back road.

Hwy 16 VA. Hungry Mother State Park. Haven't been in about 5 yrs. Last time there, the roads were not prepped like US129 with generous aprons in the tight radius turns and did not have pull offs to allow slower traffic to pull off. The road was less traveled than the dragon. My general feeling was the road is tighter and easier for drivers to out drive themselves, especially bikes. It was a fun road. Just be careful about pushing past 8/10ths.

As a brit living in the lake district watching videos featuring the tail of the dragon or the canyons is always funny to me because most our roads are like that and to hear people talk about traffic on those roads sounds alien to me because over here everyone drives "spirited" because that's all we know Part of the reason I was to disappointed with the new for a horizon
@danielcamacho1913

I've seen on Top Gear that the UK has some beautiful roads, some even with mountain scenery that reminds me of New Mexico. In the USA those roads are the exception, not the rule. We mostly have straight, boring highways and traffic snarls of urban shitholes. Most Americans get used to that as THE definition of driving, and then if they actually go to a mountain road they get motion sickness. Or they realize they're heading downhill to a hairpin turn, and they burn up their brakes because they can't use engine braking with their automatic POS.
@danielcamacho1913
@danielcamacho1913 5 жыл бұрын
I've heard that the twisty country roads of England, and the fact that it was normal for luxury cars to have manual transmissions, was why Jaguars didn't come with cup holders for a long time. Jaguar execs couldn't comprehend the American norms of straight, boring roads and automatic transmissions, so the desire to drink coffee behind the wheel baffled them. So they didn't heed the salesmen in the USA saying "We need cup holders. Prospective customers are walking away, and people who buy the cars still complain later." I also heard that ended because Ford bought Jaguar and said "Thou shalt..." and Jaguar sales in the USA *multiplied* when cup holders became available. On the down side, now it's hard to find a Jag with a real stick-and-clutch manual transmission. :-/

@@danielcamacho1913 in the uk theirs only three specific type of people that drive automatics: car enthusiasts who daily drive imported 4 door performance saloons. people who legally cant drive manual cars. and modern luxury cars. we also have a culture (in the north) of underage driving and parents teaching them to drive cars and bikes. I love driving around where I live everyday

Road for road the back of the Dragon is better but there are so many other good roads down in the area of the Tail of the Dragon so that area is still better. Down there is also the Moonshiner 28 and the Cherohala Skyway as well as others. These roads are way better than the Tail of the Dragon.

I don't know if better, because it's pretty subjective. The road itself is great, but it's very high traffic and a bit of a tourist draw. I have spent a week in that region every year for the past four years and am at the point now where I sometimes don't even visit the dragon at all. I still consider it one of the greats though.
@BoostJunkieMedia

Yes exactly why I say other roads are better because of all the traffic and tourist draw. I don't even ride/drive the Tail of the Dragon anymore unless I am there during the week. I refuse to go on the weekends because of the idiots who don't know how to drive/ride.
