Maybe the battery inside the actual cartridge just needs to be replaced. If he could pop it open and replace the coin battery inside it could possibly save muta some time. Not sure if itll wipe saved data if the battery is done, But you can solder a new battery on the +/ - on the back of the board that could be a safe approach before taking the old one out. ( will need steady hands for that ) 10-12 yr shelf life on coin batteries.

I still have Heiankyo Alien for the Gameboy. My grandma got it for me for Christmas back in the early 90s. Still love that game.

I only had a few Games on the Gameboy and played Tetris and Poemon red/yellow quite a lot, that Tetris music sticks in your head :)
