I found a WW2 Bunker in my Garden!

I recently found a WW2 abandoned bunker in my backyard garden whilst clearing some vines and ivy. The farmhouse itself dates back over 100 years but I found evidence that this bunker was used as an air raid shelter during world war 2. I can't imagine what it must have been like for the people back then to bug out in this whilst waiting for an air raid to pass. I originally thought it was a cellar or basement, and I am sure the people of that time used it as that. But I discovered an air vent and through further research it definitely had links to ww2. My farmhouse is a few miles from a military airbase so I can see why they would have needed a bunker in their back garden. I'm thinking of turning it into some sort of prepper bunker? Let me know what you think I should do to it.

First to understand: I'm almost 80 years old and I remember the black out drills during and after WW2 in the cold war. Some call us, "the duck and cover generation". We lived in the basement during the war. You might want to get an engineer or specialist to examine the shelter to see how to make it safe and healthy. There are modern ways to clean, seal, provide air exchange, prevent water coming in, and yet make a unique addition to your home. Regarding your new family: You will never (ever) get settled with family members. It's alway and forever an adventure. It can be a wonderful adventure with wife then wife and children and then grandchildren and-so-forth (life grows over time). It takes work and care. The rewards can be beyond what you ever expected when you look back. Sure there are things I would do better if I could, however, I did the best I could at the time, knowing what I did at the time and that is part of the adventure. Don't expect to know it all, yes try, but if you make a few mistakes, join the club.

Our town house is 1864, in a small market town in Wales. Our other house is an old farm on a mountain in Wales. It's pre-1550. We've had it for 5 generations, basically an old Welsh long house. It's been sympathetically modernised. So we can go to the toilet indoors! We've got all the old stables, smithy and pig styles. We love it! Most of all, we love discovering things that in my poultry 43 years of life and living there, I never knew they were there. Well done sir. I love happy finds by true men like yourself. Great video. Your bunker looks amazingly similar to a storm shelter. Especially in areas of the world where there are a lot of tornadoes. Best to keep it for storing home canned goods, wine, beer, root vegetables such as potatoes, etc. You could also include an emergency kit, in case you ever have to use it as a living space for short periods.

I've visited the Fort Warden U.S. military base in Washington State that was active during WW2 but deactivated shortly after, and the ceilings of the bunkers were covered in these calcium stalactites from a hundred years of water leaks! Really cool thing to see how nature can move into these old abandoned spaces in more ways then just plant growth.

I and many thousands of others are so jealous and wish we had such an air raid shelter in our garden too - what a great and important piece of history! The family who had this built must have had a fair bit of money as these were not free public shelters provided by the government, but built by a local contractor - and they were not cheap. The hole in the ceiling you call a vent was actually the emergency exit in case the entrance got covered in rubble by a near miss. This exit would have had a metal cover on it - possibly removed so it could be made into the present vent. The entrance probably did not have a wooden door on it. The hooks on the ceiling are for hanging lanterns as there was no wired power to it. One common thing is people saying 'what can I do with it'? Why do anything with it - though not the prettiest, sure, there is an entire self-supporting eco-system in there of creatures etc. I also wouldn't worry about what you thought was mould - that is just the lime leaching out of the concrete and forming those stalactites. Enjoy!

I think you should maintain this as a prepper bug out shelter. After you restore/repair it, put in shelving that will keep enough food, cloths, etc to hold you and your family over for a week or so. If you intend to use this underground "bunker" you'll have to install some sort of a sump system to keep it dry from standing water. You will also have to take measures to make it more water tight and increase the ventilation so air passes more freely and circulates. That means installing some sort of exhaust fan and electrifying the space. First off, you need to pump that water out and pressure wash all the surfaces then treat the concrete or stone with mold prevention paint and seal it. One more important issue is to have the cellar tested for radon gas . Just some thoughts but it could be made into a wine/beer cellar and storage area if it is remodeled correctly. Nice find though Mike and you have a lovely home. Cheers mate!
@scottw2317
@scottw2317 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. This to me makes the most logical process to follow. Just for the record I believe that most of what you saw was leaching of lime from the concrete, not uncommon when concrete in a damp area starts to degrade. I would also get a weather thermometer down there to measure constand temp and humidity over time and season. If. for example, it remains between 11-13oC this would work great for cheese. Last but not least convert the air vent area to a dumbwaiter to allow the easy transportation of materials both ways, making sure you don't cut off the flow of air that should be controlled mechanically if you are going to use it. Great find though.
@TheFlatlander440

I'd have it professionally cleaned and sealed and then I would use it for cold storage of root vegetables and, or, a wine cellar. You could paint the walls, hang art work, it could be a really nice, and useful spot.

What a find, the coolest thing ever ! I imagine those hooks in the ceiling may have been to hang paraffin lamps from so they had some light ? In terms of what you could do with it, it would make a cool wine cellar. I think you're going to have problems with damp unless you spend a lot of money on it - that would kind of rule out making it into any kind of liveable space I would imagine. But what an exciting discovery !

Wow! the possibilities! My wife had a suggestion that I thought was pretty cool.. It looks like it's very close to the outside of your house, so maybe you could come up with a plan to connect the shelter to your house via a tunnel.? And you could make it into a panic room. Anyways, I'm sure you will come up with something awesome to use it for. And congratulations on the little one that's on the way!!

Look how small they are, seems rather unlikely they could hold any substantial weight. Also people didn't really put beds in these shelters. My guess is they are for hanging lamps. If you're trapped in there for hours, lightning is essential.

I agree the hooks and the space are small for bunks. And, let’s consider the intended use as an air raid/bombardment shelter. Chances of of such raids lasting long enough to need to sleep are slim. It’s not very well hidden to be a long term hiding place from ground troops.
