I don't think the warning that "you got to skip this episode" was entirely correct, there was one particular scene or two that was a minor spoiler for the next few upcoming episodes, but the warning probably could have been something more like, "This first episode was NOT written for new viewers who are freshly coming into this series, it was written for returning Fullmetal Alchemist fans to get them excited about the new Brotherhood anime run. As such, this episode is just going to go and not hold your hand for anything or explain anything to you. It is normal for you to not understand this at first."

The first episode was made with the assumption that people saw the 2003 version, which had a slower start. Most people praise brotherhood over the 2003 version, but some say the start of the 2003 versions slower start makes the beginning more enjoyable. They often say that brotherhood is better if you watch the 2003 version first, but either way, it makes a 10/10 for the cast majority of people.
@Vael221Ай бұрын
Eh, people who say that are pretty much all just people who DID that, and then get confused because they watch Brotherhood and think there is a bunch of content that got "cut" from the story. The truth is almost all of the things that got "cut" were original content written for the '03 adaptation and not actually a part of the manga/Brotherhood (with a few minor exceptions). Like, no hate, been there done that learned the error of my ways years ago. FMA03 was great but it's a different continuity.

Spoiler free explanation about the difference between the original show (FullMetal Alchemist aka FMA) and FMA Brotherhood (aka FMAB). The both series are anime adaptations of the same manga. However FMA kind of jumped the gun and started production pretty early in the manga’s life. Pretty soon the anime caught up with where the manga was and instead of waiting for the manga to continue the anime production staff just decided to make the rest of it up. FMAB was then made years after both the manga and FMA were finished so FMAB is the actual story that the creator made.
@Fanatic_ForememАй бұрын
minus several important stories because you're supposed to have watched the 03 anime first for context. Nobody in the reaction crowd seems to be aware of that and its deeply frustrating to see people react to whats effectively the part 2
@Vael221Ай бұрын
Slight correction. The first adaptation didn't "jump the gun", so much as take a popular growing story and use it as source material to write an original narrative. Obviously this means it shares a lot of similarities especially earlier on, but FMA03 is very much doing it's own thing basically right from the start, adding in original storylines and fundamentally altering major aspects of the worldbuilding. And then yeah Brotherhood was created and release much closer to the end of the manga publication so it could tell the full story the author created (Brotherhood actually finished airing about a month after the final chapter of the manga was originally released)

A short rundown on how the alchemy transmutation work: In order to perform an alchemy transmutation, you're supposed to first draw the so-called "transmutation circle". _(Or "structural matrix", which is another name for this concept)._ The transmutation circle then determines which kind of transformation will be performed. Edward Elric is an exception in that he doesn't have to use a transmutation circle: he simply puts his palms together and that's it. His brother Alphonse, on the other hand, has to use transmutation circles. Since it's very impractical to always draw a circle (and it takes some time as well), alchemists use various tricks in order to have a transmutation circle ready whenever they want -- usually by having such circles imprinted or drawn on gloves _(Mustang)_ or gauntlets _(Armstrong),_ or tatooed on their wrists _(McDougal)_ or palms _(Kimbley)._ Kimbley's case is interesting: instead of having a full transmutation circle tatooed on each palm, he has one component tatooed on one palm and the other component on the other palm. When he has to perform a transmutation, he simply puts his palms together thus connecting those two components. That's why his wrists are in rigid shackles -- to prevent him from doing this. Mustang's gloves, beside having transmutation circles drawn on them, have another purpose. They are made of a material which can create sparks when rubbed, and he uses those sparks to ignite the inflammable materials which he creates with his alchemy. However, he cannot create sparks if his gloves are wet.
@Vael221Ай бұрын
Two things. 1) Alchemy is basically magic chemistry. I mean obviously there is a lot of more complicated stuff and exploring that is a big part of the story, but that's the core of it and keeping that context helps. 2) People get way too rankled imo about "spoilers" in anime intros. There is foreshadowing and sometimes references to events in the show, but without context they are basically meaningless. There's just a trend of people not watching intros until after they understand all the context and then being glad they "didn't get spoiled". But to each their own I'll get off my soapbox
@Psykotik_Ай бұрын
I'll never get tired of reactors getting caught off guard by the "FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST. FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST!" midcard lmao

While this episode is an anime-original (not in the manga), I think it does a pretty good job at introducing major characters and basic mechanics of alchemy. The next few episodes set up backgrounds and themes, then the real meat of the show starts. This series is one of the shows that I refer to as "Oops all chekhov's guns" - most every detail and plot beat becomes relevant further down the line (there were a few times on my first watch through that I took notes to refer back to later)

@DaDunge16 күн бұрын
18:30 Yes but doing it that way limits them, premade circles can only transmute within a very small scope. For an example Isaacs use of water or Mustang's use of fire. I think Armstrong has two circles one for altering his own body to give him superhuman prowess and one to manipulate earth.

⚠ NOT SPOILERS, READ TO AVOID MISSING IMPORTANT DETAILS IN FUTURE EPISODES ⚠ Episodes 6, 8, 28, 29, 30, 32, 33, 36, 40, 42, 43, 44, 46, 48, and 49 have scenes after the credits; they are sometimes just fun little vignettes, but often they include significant details that will be relevant later on, and that might make some future events confusing if you haven't watched them; it's therefore highly recommended to watch them. If you don't have this list at hand, just look at how much time is left in the video when you get to the credits; if it's more than usual, there's almost certainly a post-credits scene. Furthermore, the credits in episodes 45, 54, 63, and 64 are different than usual, and worth watching (especially the ones in 64, which everyone will probably be expecting a reaction to).

Good choice watching this one. Also, yeah, just watch it in order. There's no filler in this one. Some episodes may seem filler-y, but Brotherhood is condensed down to the story of the Manga. The first attempt at the anime ran faster than the manga and they started guessing and basically changed the whole plot and ending.

Having read the manga and watched fmab, it’s not condensed except for getting rid of 2 chapters of events that didn’t have anything to do with the over story (mining town / train heist)

There's no need to skip the openings (at the very least watch them once, if u wanna skip for time reasons after that's different). They're not spoilers, the whole point is to hype you up for things to come. While they show characters that appear in the show, none of the SCENES actually happen (at least now how they're shown in some cases) so it's not like it's spoiling anything. And the first episode isn't really a spoiler or filler or anything. And there isn't really any "filler" in this series. The closest is a recap episode part way through but you shouldn't skip it cause there is important stuff in it. Don't skip any episodes. ALSO there's a bunch of episodes with post credit scenes you need to watch. Stolen from reddit: 6, 8, 28, 29, 30, 32, 33, 36, 40, 42, 43, 44, 46, 48, 49. besides those, these episodes have different than usual ending- 45, 54, 63 and 64. Do NOT skip anything in ep 64.
