At 10:44 the room you couldn't identify looks lite where they printed the paper. That wooden box on the floor looks like a type setting box that they used to store the individual letters, numbers and symbols in. And on the left wall that looks like a Printing Press. What a fascinating historical place. Thanks for taking us on your journey.
@bryanvargo56912 жыл бұрын
Correct. The wooden box is called a California job case, which was a type case used to hold moveable type for letterpress printing. I remember having to memorize the location of where each letter was stored in the California job case back in my high school graphics arts class. Love the adventures and the videos!

Good morning Dr. Hannah! Thank you for starting my day with me. Gold prospecting seems like it would be right up your alley and,apparently, it pays off! The mining town ‘recreation’ was really neat. I’m assuming the buildings were brought from different places and set up? The building that you thought might be a school house, I think that was printing press ‘stuff’ on the floor, so maybe a town newspaper? The funky chair seems like it’s set up to restrain someone with the hooks and pegs set up to bind someone around the chest and arms, maybe? Have a wonderful day 🤗 Oh, cowboy boots with the towel wrap, perfect!

At 10.47 you are looking at a frame with little square spaces that contain a font of lead type! It's called a California Job Case. It was used to make up columns of type that were inserted into a printing press and coated with thick gooey black ink. So this may have been a newspaper press room. After printing is completed, each little letter had to be cleaned and put back in the proper cubby hole for reuse. Each size of type needed a separate drawer in a huge cabinet. If you drop it on the floor, you're in for an all day job replacing hundreds of individual letters! Thank God and Microsoft for word processing software!

My favorite classifier is a white plastic salad colonder with little square holes. I have used it for several years and works well. Hi Dr. Hannah, the reason that you see newspaper on the walls is to block out cold drafts of wind from leaking through the board walls. It does make for interesting reading though. I didn't hear you mention the name and whereabouts of the ghost town. I'd love to check out this place. Have you been to Columbia State Park in the California gold country? You'd love it! The old hotel there is said to be haunted. I haven't been there for years but they did have a gold digging tour at a nearby mine when I was there. Also don't pass up the old mining town of Bodie a few miles north of Mono Lake. Great fun and history there as well. Enjoy your travels and stay safe... Dave

A good hack for melting cheese on top a burger for example is really an old Diner trick. I use an old pot lid, squirt some water into your pan near the burger and cover quickly with lid. Wait a few seconds for the water to evapoarate and Voila, a perfectly steamed cheese burger. If you like onions but not raw , I dice a bit of onion and when raw I put in onto my burger under the cheese before I steam and the steaming/melting process perfectly cooks the onion by the time you assemble and eat the burger. That's another old Diner trick they used to do back in the day. I tell them to do my onions like that at 5 guys and they're always amazed.
