Here in the Deep South okra is a must, especially with summer veggies like purple hull peas, Lima beans, corn, fried chicken and cornbread! Fry that okra crunchy and crisp! Okra blooms are beautiful and a great subject to paint.

Steve, when I was growing okra I was captured by the blooms as well. I noticed how similar they are to the blooms on cotton and how they both resemble the hibiscus. I researched them and found out they are all in the same family. Your painting does them justice! Beautiful!

Lovely picture. I would love to try this on some sweet pea flowers next year. Different colours but same delicate texture and glow. As for the leak/fault you noted, I sometimes worry about such things, until I remember a family saying. "A man on a galloping horse would not notice it, and folks on foot aren't rude enough to comment."" 🙂 And it looked perfect by the time you'd finished. Thank you

As a watercolor artist who has sacrificed my painting in order to raise a huge garden, this video hit home in a special way. As I have worked, I've seen so many things to paint. Luckily, I was able to snap some pictures. Hopefully this winter I can get in the studio and fill some pages. By the way, our garden really struggled this year, between very hot, dry weather to an influx of bugs.... I mean, monster like bugs! I'm in Appalachia (east Tennessee) hopefully next year will be easier on your wife and myself. Did you guys notice such obstacles this season ?

Good subject. Liked how you masked with tape and new schminke masking fluid. Seeing how you modeled the curb ving petals was especially helpful, as ive been trying (not too successfuly) to paint sweet peas, which are all about curves, shadows and highlights.thx.

Hi Steve! I have been watercolor painting for a few years, still very much a beginner. What I am struggling with is understanding sizing. What papers generally have it, do both sides of a sheet have this? How can it affect a painting? Would you be interested in enlightening us as I think there may be others who do not understand this paper application. I really appreciate your tutorials, thank you so much!

There really isn't much to tell. All watercolor papers have some form of sizing. Sizing is necessary or else watercolor paper would be like painting on a paper towel. Sizing limits absorption pure and simple. There are two types. Internal (mixed with the pulp when the paper is formed) and external (applied to the outer surface after forming). Many quality papers have both, Arches for example. Not all paper makers are clear about what type sizing they have but all of them have it in some form.

This was great video and delightful subject! Looks like a successful year and the pictures of your produce looks fantastic!!!! We just bought another house with a water well and pretty large area for garden. There’s a section in the town of 8,000 which was built in the 50’s that have these features. I’m not quite sure what we can grow in the sand and heat of West Texas but hopefully okra’s one! We are SO excited to have a place for garden again!!! We love okra anyway it’s fixed but fried is definitely our favorite!! I love it with fried yellow squash and cut fresh tomatoes on side. Yum, yum!! I’m hungry now….lol Great tutorial and beautiful painting 🤩🤩. I enjoy painting items around me too!

Hey Steve, thank you for your video. I noticed that you use Albercht Durer Pencil for establishing sketches, would say when working with watercolour pencils it is good to use a stiffer watercolour brush, or a soft natural hair can do?

They all seem to work well. Stiff brushes will lift and move the pigment a little easier.
