The Life of an Overlanding KZbinr is one of some serious privilege so please take this video with a pinch of salt. The intention is for it to be more thought provoking and perspective expanding than to be a "Woe be Me" type video, I am by no means ungrateful for my experiences, I deeply love the work I do and put so much of myself into it. That's just the thing that gets a bit exhausting sometimes, is the level of commitment that making ROAM Overlanding takes. To make a show for you guys to tune into every other sunday, is a great effort, and one that I gladly do! But every now and then like anyone I have my own moments of weakness where passion dwindles slightly. I hope you can all appreciate and understand where the video is coming from!
My Toyota Hilux is my Home away from Home, it has petty much all the luxuries I need to travel and explore Southern Africa and hey who knows, maybe even one day the world. The setup is incredible, but it does have its limitations like any setup. What you gain in freedom and storage you lose in having to be based outside around the vehicle, which 9/10 is epic and what we are out there to experience, but that 1/10 when you happen to need to produce content to fund your life, that can be annoying at times! Maybe this is all just inspiration for future changes to the vehicle to find a way to compromise and make everything work out in the end for us all! Here is to more content, more of the time, and from more and more epic places!

Yo Adrian, thanks for sharing! I've been on the road now for a little over 2 months as a full-time content creator with my motorcycle. What helps me is booking hotels / airbnbs for 1-2 weeks once in a while. Just so I can sit down, edit my videos, spend a day watching netflix and not sit in the dirt. Because as you said, travelling (especially when filming it is your job) is super exhausting after a while. So my suggestion would be if it is financially feasable to grab a hotel for 2 weeks and edit there and then spend a week in the middle of nowhere just filming and living the adventure. Of course that doesn't work in super remote parts of the world but maybe it is possible in some of them. Cheers! Edit: By the way, we stumbled across Eva zu Beck in Albania last year and she also uses Hotels and AirBnbs once in a while to edit. And then she spends another month in the middle of nowhere just camping. Splitting editing & the adventure helps a lot because editing in your tent sucks balls.

Yes, this seems to be the answer! And certainly like the girl from the Itchi Boots channel does. She definitely stays in hotels, and it doesn’t seem like she goes home at all until the project/series is finished, i.e. she’s all in until mission accomplished! And then on for a deserved break! Loving the content here and great to watch your honesty and openness Adrian. Great in-site. Superb mate 👌

It sounds like you might need to look into a different style overland vehicle that suits your needs more. Maybe a Toyota Troopy with a roof-top conversion by Alu-Cab or Alu-Innovations. That way, you can comfortably stay inside the vehicle (incl. sit upright) when the weather outside turns nasty or to do work. Plus, it's much easier to access your bed. Or to take it to the next level in overlanding comfort, perhaps an off-road (4WD) campervan, like the MB Sprinter 4x4.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding Жыл бұрын
Sprinter would be awesome, but I definitely think at some stage an Canopy camper on a single cab cruiser or extra cab Hilux, or a troopy. It definitely won’t happen soon. But it’s alright for now, I think it would be something to work on for my next build though

Bud I just want to let you know that I really appreciate you and the work, money and time you put in for a great show. One quickly miss the amount of all of the above this take. You enrich our lives. Personal story, friend of my dad was a avid overlander but involved in a work accident and now paralysed. The whole world was flipped for that family. Went into tuff depression and got very sick. Somehow he found your channel (via voice search commands) and getting inspired snd his live back. He started living again. He now overlands with his son in laws (with all his kit) and they have a blast. Plenty work for all the family to get all sorted and comfortable for him but what a blessing. All this channel and the work you do. I would love for him to meet you (even if its on a call). Big ups to you!!!

That’s an incredible story! It’s actually something I take very seriously, to try and make a show that puts people there. I am not naive and realised very quickly that Overlanding is quite an expensive and privileged choice of holiday; I know that not everyone would be able to get the time or money, or have the means to be able to do these trips, and I want them to join me and experience it all with us! So that means so much to hear that the content inspired passion and excitement in people! ❤️

Great honest video. look at the LC 78 "Troopy". Not V8 in SA but the 4.2 is a bombproof engine. Also mix it up and camp, cabin, camp, chalet etc. its what we do and we are travelling (on holiday admittedly) for months on end.

@@RoamOverlanding Agreed that they are not the fastest vehicle on the road - but is that what you actually need - speed? Simplicity and reliability as well as the versatility of being able to "live / work" inside your vehicle - depending upon how you lay out the interior - winds hand down over speed. Just look at the number of Troopy's that are used as expedition vehicles worldwide for those reasons. Keep up the good work - and life is too short to stress the small things - relax and enjoy what you are doing whilst you can.

If you are not going with a trailer. I think its either a 4x4 van or it is andrew st pieres old troop carier. It has a pop up roof that is the roof and you can keep it up while working inside under the roof. Im sure you know his old troopy but its either that or a 4x4van. A trailer is nice but for one person its too much. I think you will be happiest with a van where the bed/office/kitchen area is all setup and ready ti use immediately.

I think we all love your honesty and your downtoeartness, and I am actually glad to hear that one can get enough 😊 I wasn't sure it was possible. I first bought a second hand rooftop tent (it even had the room on the side so you could change inside and climb up.) However the first morning the Mrs said: "take some pictures, this is gumtree material.." Then I got a old Recco camper which I restored nicely, fully solar, 270 awning etc, and it was a dream to set up, 3 minutes. Only issue was when the wind / rain was too bad there wasn't much space to do anything inside there. It was swopped for a water damaged Jurgens Xplorer which I repaired and converted the front to a seating area. So the bed is always made, and there is a place to sit to eat / work if you want to be inside. Works very well for us. Tows very easily both on and offroad. You will find your solution, although I don't think there is a perfect one...

There is that fine line, a pivot point, where you go from doing something to living something. You have clearly articulated that 4 weeks is your limit with your current rig setup for working. So you know if you want to do longer expeditions and work while traveling you are going to have to make changes. I promise you you won't lose anybody because you change your rig to suit your needs for video production. For my wife (a cancer survivor), her number one requirement is the ability to get out of the weather and sit inside when she needs to. That means our rig *needs* are different than other peoples might be. And so are yours. And if you can't make the changes to the rig you want, you will have to make changes to how you do it. Taking few days in a lodge or BnB every few weeks to take a break from truck based living, recharge, and get some work done in peace might be you next viable option. Cheers!
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding Жыл бұрын
Yup I think you make a valid point here. I think it’s something I need to add to the current budget until I can make a change to the vehicle that would suit the needs in a more sustainable way. Obviously it would be cheaper to be able to pull up to a campsite for a couple days than a Bnb; let’s see what the future holds! 🤓

Thanks for your insights young fellah - it’s all about your comfort zone and confidence - I retired from the Federal Public Service in Canberra Australian at the tender age of 54 - my Praetorian friend Andre said I was too young to retire - I converted my new mountain bike for solo touring and after a practice run to Rockhampton (three months) and New Zealand (two months) I discovered that traveling alone with my one-person tent was perfect for me - I then travelled Athens to Bergen (Norway) to Cornwall (UK) over six months - now planning my trek across Canada for 2023.

I've only just stumbled across your channel through recommendations from KZbin. I've been a content creator for almost 12 years. My first channel MCQBushcraft I built upto 350k subs then abandoned it much for the reasons you talk about in this video. This is my second channel and I like to think I've learnt from my mistakes. Lack of financial reward and being the driving force behind everything to move forward is extremely difficult to maintain with a channel that requires you to put in a lot of physical effort, planning and logistics. Eventually your passion for what once was a hobby can be whittled down leaving you a bit tired which causes the entire channel to fall. Its happens to KZbinrs of all walks of life and its normal. I think the key is to make a change before it damages your passion for the thing you love. In my case now I'm self employed and I work elsewhere as a mechanic from time to time to give myself disconnection and financial relief from the constant grind of content creation. It keeps me sain and once I've been away from filming for a week or sometimes two I'm itching to get back to that creative process. Having videos lined up to upload while working esle where keeps the plates spinning without them loosing momentum. Just my experience personal but I wish you all the best and you have a new subscriber.

Hi, thank you for sharing. I agree that proper shelter from the elements is needed if one is considering working away from home. I was also on a path of creating an overlander that would suit our need at that stage but our goal has changed. We are planning long trips and with the blessing of working remotely my wife and I stopped the build on the vehicle and decided on an off-road caravan that will allow us to sit inside and work if need be. Once we receive our off-road caravan early next year I will share our experiences on my instagram account. Be safe and enjoy your travels!

What I've seen other overlanding content creators do to get work done and also just to take a break from living in a tent, is to stay at proper accommodations, either via Airbnb or motel/hotel. They take this time to recharge, do laundry, have proper showers, and do work. Not sure if that is possible to the places you go. But if it is, it could be the answer to your overlanding blues.
@RoamOverlanding

It would always be possible at some point; I think I would need to get more funding to have budget to make that happen, so we will have to see how that goes. It will certainly mean spending a lot more time away from home, but I have minimised my lifestyle so much that I don’t have much left to leave behind besides my family 😂

We had a 4 week toor through the northan cape and although when looking back it was the best trip of my life, there was a few days where the fire did not spark the exitement and the wine tasted a little bit bitter. I have often thought about it and tried, on an extended holiday to work. What I leaned very quick was what some have said, I would go travel - then stop somewhere and rent a co working space for couple of weeks. The other thing we thought about, and surprised us, was how useful those off road tents looked. Use one as a base camp, then the roof top for the quick overnights when not stopping for long. You could hide it in the edit…😂

I think in everything what you do in life the biggest job is to find the right balance especially if you have family. "No one can eat his favorite meal day by day" and sometimes even your biggest passion and love does hurt more than everything else :-) Most happy people are that one which are satisfied ! Of course that is very relative and personal but this is life and if you are not satisfied anymore with that setup you want to use and enjoy to work with it and have the possibility to change to something else. Go and try to make you so satisfied and happy how ever it is possible and realistic. Everything is a compromise and depends always on your actuall situation. For me I decided to buy a "Geocamper" for my Isuzu D-Max and to tow a lightweight equipment trailer. Isolated GFK Monocock is number one material, especially in different weather conditions. My other choice would have been a light Aluminium-Steel Trailer that you have not to setup long like the TRC458 or DecampX3 or other brands like Conqueror. Lightweight good independent suspension and one that you can stand up straight inside and have a table to work, shower and toilet inside for all weather conditions, but that trailers cost a little bit to much for me, otherwise 1st choice. Lightly towing can make a lot of fun, sense and bring you more comfort than everything else for Overlanding. Gonna be very interesting to what you gonna change to 😉 Stay happy 🤠👍and satisfied Peter from Swedish Lappland.

I met a German couple about 15 years ago. They traveled in a truck that was converted to a motorhome all the way from Germany straight through Africa all the way down to Cape Town. I grew up around the corner from Paarl's Home Affairs. I remember being in the garage and seeing this giant yellow truck coming around the corner and asking me when Home Affairs would open up again. They ended up spending the night with us taking a hot shower and just chilling with us for 2 days sharing stories and the husband played some German folk songs on his accordion. Before they left they also said that this was a nice reset for them to be able to just sit in a house on a lounge set, taking a proper shower and just interact with other people.

Glad for your honesty, dude! I might be negative, but it seems to me being an overlanding content creator is less enjoyable than being a pure overlander. You constantly have to think about taking pictures, shooting videos, getting the right angles, and lighting, and trying to enjoy the trip and scenery all at the same time. All the work seems to take away from the fun. That said, I appreciate the work you do man. Major inspiration for some of us! Stay strong and stay blessed.

This is why I have been so fascinated by the 4x4 Sprinter van idea. I am nowhere near even affording this lifestyle but the room and comfort of a bigger vehicle is much more appealing to me. The Sprinter can never do everything that you can do in the Hilux but for me, that's what I would go for as a beginner if I had the bucks. Especially after seeing what Chad from Living The Van Life could do in his Sprinter van. There's also those Ford Rangers from SA Roadtrippers. At least with those, you still have a vehicle that you can do proper offroading.

The setup and tear down constantly is busy work in addition to our jobs. What helped us was using camp sites with power and a starlink to make the week days work and explore off-grid places with solar and jackery/goal zeros for the weekends. Only thing that brought us home was winter weather. We just picked up a Van build so we can continue during the winter.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro 16” because the screen is twice as bright as my previous one, and have drop sides for my awning to close in the area around the side and rear of the vehicle, to make my life a bit easier if I need to hold up for a couple days in one spot 👌🏻 yet to test it all though!

I come from a very different view and ambition with my attempt at making videos than what you do so I may not be the best to make comment but I’m going to anyway. My little not very professional channel was started for fun because my family and friends always wanted to see what we got up to and where we went on trips. It will never be a high quality professional production and tbh I am surprised at the support I have received. I’m also in a very different position as I can stop tomorrow if I want to. So very different to yours, but I can promise you the monotony of a normal job and sitting in traffic behind idiots on their cell phones in JHB is also tough to do on a daily basis with a trip once maybe twice a year like most South Africans. We need to sit around the fire one day and discuss things from outside of our bubbles. In fact I don’t know why we don’t do this in SA, if anything to just support each other. All the best Adrian. Find your balance and put down the camera and leave the laptop , ignore the numbers and just take a break. You are allowed to sometimes, like in any job.

I have considered that, a single cab cruiser or a troopy. Or even an extra cab Hilux. Plenty of options but they cost too much right now! 😂I still love my bakkie and don’t want to get rid of it! I wish I could have both a camper and then make this one light weight for Lekker 4x4ing

I like the fact that you are honest about it. It reminds me of people who share all their highlights in their lives on FB but its completely false. We all have our dull and crappy moments and to pretend as if its just this fabulous life is a lie. Thank you for showing us all these places, most of us dream about it but in reality will never get to see it. Job well done Adrian!👍

Hahah yes! I think I am very fortunate to get more reward than most with this, and it’s still really difficult. It requires huge amount of support from so many people to make happen and at the end of the day isn’t very dignifying to always need the help of friends, family and sponsors, Patreon. This is a great topic for content creators, as a travel writer that explores Australia solo most of the time, I have the same issues at times. I find staying in a motel or caravan park cabin a good way to get my articles written and images edited. I try and stick to two or three months on the road at a time, but sometimes I need to spend four months overlanding as Australia is so bloody big. Keep up the good work😁

I think it’s all about figuring out the right balance between work and play. The funny thing is that when you have sponsors or are being paid to travel, you feel so guilty if you sit and do nothing or if you do something without filming it. So that’s a whole new thing to create balance and space to create, rest and also have some fun! 🤓

@@RoamOverlanding yeah. Also, when you have spent a lot of money and travelled a long distance you really want to maximise your time. But there's a point where you are unable to do a decent job anymore. I really struggle when camping in summer: heat, shorter nights, less sleep. It takes a toll. After a few weeks without a break I start making stupid mistakes. This is bad for the end product but also can be potentially dangerous.

I have a suggestion... put the camera down, close the laptop and fuel up the Hilux... then see where your limit is! Figure out if it's the channel bringing you down or whether it's your passion that's waning. In my opinion, 4 weeks is not a long time to be "on the road". We have happily done longer trips to Namibia, Botswana, not once have wished for our comfy bed back home.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding Жыл бұрын
Hey there Shaun, it’s not wishing for a comfy bed for me, just I’m happy in my RTT, it wishing for a comfy place to sit and work and make the content. 🙃 but the truth is I cannot afford to do a trip unless I have sponsors attached which means I need to work. I have been doing roam full time for too long, and now what little I do earn is all from and for ROAM. What I do have planned is an upcoming Solo trip to Namibia and then to Kgalagadi; which I am excited about, to reconnect to creating and traveling on my own. So let’s see if I can take some of my learnings and apply it to this upcoming trip and if I get through it in a different way. The idea of this video was just to share that it’s not always sunshine and roses. Even though it’s a fantastic experience.

Thanks for detailing the content creation and how taxing long trips can be. Many don't realize the production work needed. Have you considered getting an Expedition truck, like from Krug Expedition, as a base of operations? You could tow your overlanding rig behind. Break out for filming then edit in the truck. Sort of a base camping but a little faster. Always great to see what you're up to.

@@labourlawact7826 Valid point.. There are options. Krug Expedition has vehicles in the 300k range as many others do. Long term leases/rental and financing options may make it very affordable. One can build an Expedition rig for around 60k-100k depending on chassis used. With build sponsorships etc the costs can drop down to just labor and some build materials. For content creators it can also provide great content so the build series can even provide additional offsets in overall costs and expenditures.
