Today’s video is a very exciting one! Since posting my empty house tour, I received so many comments and messages about how the light fixtures in the home are probably worth a lot of $$$. I tried to do some research on my own but decided to bring in the expert of all experts to help appraise them. Dr. Lori is an appraiser of antiques, collectibles and fine art. She’s basically called the Ph.D. antiques appraiser! I couldn’t believe what some of the light fixtures were worth!! Which fixture is your favorite?

Drew, retired museum curator here. Consider a Fine Arts insurance policy on these valuable lighting fixtures. My museums worked with the Huntington Block agency with Cigna coverage. A fine arts agency is much more knowledgeable and aware of the issues that properly insuring objects like these entail than a standard homeowners insurance underwriter with scheduled items of particular value. Insurance is not just about premiums, but also about service.

Very good advice, he might want to contact the L.A. County Museum research department or the Los Angeles Historical Society as well, I would not be surprised if they don't already have some information about this house. The quality and expense of the fixtures in this house, the original owners might have had other fine art pieces (paintings and small sculptures0 that were donated to the museum.

Is there anyway, in your design for your new home, to keep the lamps where they are, and work them into your master home design, maintaining the previous owners, and the history of this historic home? Is it possible to get your new home on the historic registry in California?
@stepone6159

@@donnagoring250 If Drew would get it on the Historic Registry of California, he would probably face great restrictions on what he can and cannot do with the house. At least that is the way it is in my state. My brother and sister-in-law were going to purchase a historic home here, but when they researched what they could and could not do, they decided against it. I'm thinking most of the fixtures arrived much later than when the house was new. Some of chandeliers hang way too low / seem designed for higher ceilings. Reaching up and touching a chandelier, or banging your head on one - I don't think that would happen back then. And I can't believe that the Murano grapes chandelier would have originally hung so very close to the sconces - this looks like the result of a collector running out of space (been there, done that!).

I bet the owner was a European transplant or lover of European style and they lived in this house all their lives and then it transferred to a child. I've visited some elderly people (part of my job in Aged Care) who live in houses that haven't been updated since the 20s to 50s and many times it's an unmarried daughter or son who lived with their parents, looked after them when they aged, and inherited the house. Most of them don't feel the need or desire to remodel as it's comfortable to them, or feel it's an insult to the parents.

Now I want to know who the original owners were. I wonder if it was a Hollywood exec’s house, because somebody evidently went to Europe to source lights for their new home. In 1929-30 (the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began in October 1929, for reference). I bet your house has some interesting history!

Yes, would be very interesting to know who the previous owners were. I think the title company can tell you who the previous owners are. If someone really famous, and historical significance, may be some property tax savings, if you preserve the history, for example. Dr. Lori gave you some clues-on someone Going to France to search for light fixtures. For my house, i was able to go all the way back to when the Spanish Missions owned my property as a vineyard.

Jeeze....add them all together and they're worth more than what I paid for my last house!!!) Dr. Lori's good, really knows her stuff. My advice to you would be kinda like that line out of The Godfather....(Remember? "Leave the gun....take the cannoli!") ...only here it would be don't stress about the bathroom tiles, because there's a lot of that in your area that's been reclaimed and is available. Those light fixtures are apparently original to the house and we're curated by someone with a very knowledgeable eye (and a fairly large pocketbook, I'd guess!) It might be interesting to dig into the ownership history of your new house. Maybe it once DID belong to a movie star who traveled a lot.....!(?)

History writer here. Agree with @Patricia Heirsupply, museum curator. Insurance value is different from “worth value.” The “replacement” value of these antique pieces needs, as suggested, Fine Arts specialists. Great Britain also has a magnificent Arts & Crafts reference centre for history, as many of the artisans were British but travelled overseas to wealthy homes.

The small French chandelier is my fave! The Bell Flower swag detail has been a part of interior design since the mid 1700. This detail was designed and introduced by Scottish architect and interior and furniture designer, Robert Adam. In addition to lighting, Bell Flower detail is found in plasterwork and furniture inlay.

Bravo, Drew, for getting these appraised and educating yourself on history, art periods, value, etc.! My worry has been you might throw precious babes out with the bathwater or just go nuts on cutting up period woodwork. I love that you are falling even deeper in love with your beautiful new home just be learning it's history and listening to it's whispers to you! Modernization is a delicate balance with preservation. You were blessed with an historic gem of a home...and have now become it's steward! Congratulations, Drew! 🙏🌐💞👑

I have never been a fan of antique sconces, but hearing this expert describe them, they really come alive and it makes me appreciate their beauty. Now, the two italian pendants with Murano glass. WOW. WOW. WOW. I visited Venice about 25 years ago and going to Murano was my favorite stop. Drew, if you can visit one day, make your way there to appreciate the craftmanship and what it takes to create that glass using techniques that have been passed down for centuries. You are so lucky to have these in your home. To me those are the two show-stoppers. I must have gone back to those sections of the video 3 to 4 times just to enjoy looking at them over and over. Congratulations on your new home and on acquiring these masterpieces!

Yes! Drew you need to get with your insurance agent and add a rider to the policy specifically covering these fixtures. Take good pictures and put them in your safe or safety deposit box. It’s best to have a safety deposit box to store important papers separate from your house so if anything happens to the house your papers survive.

If you remove those items you change the character of the house. The house in it‘s whole is an antique, rip of the tiles, woodwork, original flooring, lights the house will loose much of the value, more as selling single parts one by one. Here it would be forbidden and put under the historic preservation regulation because the house represents a time period perfectly. If you don‘t like Art Deco, go buy a house from another time period. I look at this house and my heart bleeds. I am really afraid of the changes it will experience by thoughtless home owners.

DREW! I'm so glad you got an expert appraisal of your light fixtures. I knew you had some impressive pieces. The first thing you should do is get them insured. Then, when you clean them, be VERY careful. Not only how you clean them, but what you use to clean them. I'm also glad she talked to you about your ceiling beams. I knew those too are very special. You really scored big time with this place and I think it's going to bring your design work to the next level. You now have a big responsibility before you. Wowza! Drew, when I first saw the tour of your new home my thought was that you should not get rid of any of the lighting and that your design style would definitely compliment all of the existing lighting. After this video, I think it underscores my thoughts. I know you might not keep them, but I think they are all unique and beautiful and I hope you do keep them since they all tie back to the original home. I can understand changing the bathroom and kitchen that were remodeled, because those do not seem to fit the elegant style of the home or your design aesthetic. I am so happy for you Drew.
