Reminds me of the Flannan Isles Lighthouse Keepers that vanished. There's a good amount of eerie stories out there around lighthouses and their keepers. That one in particular, it's currently a mystery as to what happened to them, but there are many theories. Many lighthouse keepers actually went mad due to the fume poisoning, poor physical conditions, and isolation. I do love the monster within the catacombs take this game has however. :]

Lighthouses require constant maintenance in order to work reliably, so it's cheaper to hire someone to live on remote islands with them than get a boat to get them there everyday, plus some days you can't sail due to the wind and such.
