I found something special! Persimmon! You don't see this everyday on the sawmill. Gems discovered!

One of the things I love about sawmilling is the unique people you meet, and the special logs they bring, and the building projects that often happen as a result. Today I'm cutting something I think I've only cut once before several years ago, a Persimmon log. The lumber this produces is truly beautiful and seemingly less popular than other species in our local area. I can hardly wait to make a desk for this customer from his beautiful lumber.

When I was a kid I wanted to learn how to whistle so bad, but had difficulty learning. An old fellow I mowed lawn for had a persimmon tree in his yard. He told me to pluck one of the green persimmons and eat it because it would make me pucker so much I could whistle. He was right about the pucker part, but not the whistle :)

A kind of funny fact about persimmon trees, male trees do not produce the fruit, I had one beside my driveway, one year I noticed it had a few persimmons on it, the next year it was dead, a year later the wind blew it over.

Here in our southern Cal coastal garden our Persimmon tree yields wonderful very edible delicious fruit every year, right off the limbs. People grow them for their great autumn beauty as well. Another variety is hard and is for cooking only. Ours is only around 12 feet high and as wide, but we always have bucketsful enough to gift to neighbors and friends. Yet I've never known that they can get as big as you have shown, nor that the wood is so beautiful. Thank you!

I believe persimmon is a cousin to ebony. It is a great wood to turn on a lathe. It also makes a great carving mallet.

Persimmon isnt a cousin to ebony, it *is* ebony. "Ebony" is the common name for any dark heartwood of the genus **diaspyros,** and "persimmon" is the common name for the fruit.

Never eaten a persimmon? My mom and grandma made persimmon pudding. You can't live in Indiana without eating persimmon pudding!! Haha.

Never eat a persimmon off the tree until after a frost or the fruit has fallen off the tree, Before frost the fruit will make your mouth pucker up something terrible. After frost the fruit has a good taste. My mother use to make persimmon Jam.

I have about a dozen Persimmon trees on my property. Nothing worse than an unripe persimmon lol I have harvested some ripe fruit off the tree pre-frost though.

Persimmon's are one of those things that you either love or hate.. They are not ripe until after the first hard frost.. I am from Terre Haute, In.. Most people make persimmon pudding out of them and for my family the smell of Persimmon's smells like the Christmas Season starting.. Don't try to eat them before the frost, they are extremally bitter.. loved the video, Glade you made a point to do a little bit of education to the general public...

I grew up with two huge persimmon trees in my backyard. The fruit is very tasty, but you have to collect it at the right time, lest it be too unripe or too ripe. Every year at the Parke Co. Covered Bridge Festival, the Boy Scouts had a stand that sold persimmon ice cream. And if you want a persimmon tree to produce fruit, you can't leave them in isolation. A single persimmon tree by itself will pretty much never fruit out. Two (like I had) or preferably four or more persimmon trees in close (~15 feet) proximity is what's called for. And you will have a bountiful harvest of persimmons to strain the pits out and freeze the pulp to make anything you want with it taste like Indiana.

I have several Persimmon logs to saw up. It is very dense and heavy. It is used to make golf clubs because it is so hard. The dark wood is called American ebony and the light colored wood is called white ebony. You are right about slow deliberate cuts.

YOU need to wail til a hard feeze comes before you can eat them they are very good after the freeze just not eatable before the cold they grow wild in south caroilna deer love them i seen stand on rear legs to reach higher fruit ----- a good place for a deer stand LOL

Another fact on persimmon wood. Because of its density, it was often used it make golf club heads. This was before the days of aluminum and carbon fiber. That's why a driver is still refered to as a "wood".

There are 2 different type of persimmons, one you can eat when they are ripe, the other needs to have a hard frost before you eat it. I love them.

Persimmon is called “White Ebony” because it is related to the Ebony tree. Part of why it is so uniquely heavy and has the black center!

We grew up with a Texas persimmon tree and the fruit are very sweet. Much better than a Japan persimmon tree. But a persimmon has to be ripe or it will pucker you mouth, but the Texas persimmon tree is much tastier than to others. the fruit is like a small plum, not like the other which is big like a tomato.

Persimmon is super sweet when they’re ripe. Not ripe it will pucker you up......always best after they have fallen. Also they used to make golf club heads from the persimmon wood before the aluminum golf head came out. I was told back in the day it was the pricey of all the woods because of the demand for golf clubs.....

I grew up in the south, with persimmon trees. The fruit is really good, sweet. Pick them off the tree and eat them when they are still a little green. What? Wait! Stop! Don't do that. I'm kidding. They are full of . . . alum, I think it is. Correct me if you know otherwise. It'll dry your mouth out an pucker it up. It's harmless but unpleasant. You have to wait until the fruit appears to have begun to rot. It's not rotten. It's ripe and ready to eat. When they fall on the ground, the dogs snatch them up and eat them. I see that the wood is being used for musical instruments. Banjo fret boards and such. It's the genus Diospyros. The same genus where we get ebony for musical instruments.

Great informative video. Keep your eye out for Persimmons in your area. They are plentiful and the fruit can be made into heavenly bread. You might ask your neighbors about a recipe. Also, I noticed the cicadas in your last video.

There is a lot of persimmon trees in Bakersfield California matter of fact two different types wild and tame one the fruit is small like a golf ball the other the fruit is the size of a baseball

When you go to Bloomington they are all over the ground and you can pick them up and eat them just like an apple

I was wondering what the background noise was! We have wild persimmons in east texas too! I will have to see if my circle mill can not pucker up as it plows into the log!

That background noise is the Brood X cicada. They come out of the ground every 17 year. Molt out of their outer layer to free their wings. They then climb or fly into the trees, and mate. The female then cuts anslit in a very small branch, and lays her eggs. That little branch then dies, and falls to the ground. The eggs hatch, and they borrow underground where they live, waiting to appear in another 17 years

If you don't have one already, I suggest you get a battery or electric chain saw to make those quick cuts that are occasionally needed. It would be easier than having to start the gas saw.

I was wondering what the wood smells like when you cut it? One of my favourite woods 'white willow' smells like dog poop when you cut it. Aromatic cedar smells like juicy fruit gum.

The smells are some of the best part of sawmilling. I have no idea how to describe the smell. Almost like fresh fruit in a way, but unlike anything I've cut before. Not a powerful or potent smell, but pleasant I suppose!

why wouldn't you just paint the ends of the finished lumber, would save a lot of sealer.?

Its way easier to paint the ends of the logs! Ever try and paint a stack of lumber that has different lengths in pile? Really not much waste of the sealer.

Its an emulsified paraffin wax not a paint,it is used to help keep the ends from splitting while being cut.
