Gavin Giwer I spotted his name on the video - I had to know so I Googled him! He was an assistant headmaster and later the head of the history department at a local school from 1964-2002 when he retired, and then apparently spent his retirement on golf and rugby. He died at his home in May 2019

I've watched hundreds of these over the past few years. This one is the best. Amazing!! Takes me back to the early 70's when I had the amazing good fortune to stay in a few homes like that. One owner casually mentioned that the room we were break fasting in was the oldest part of the house dating to 1600's.My poor head just reels as I try to comprehend my surroundings. England is just seething with history!! Just returned from a visit last year. Had a pint at "The Ten Bells" in London before heading to Eastbourne to stay in one of the oldest taverns and hotels next to a church that was established in the 1100's. This was a departure point for the Continent for centuries. I could barely sleep wondering how many people of historical fame and royalty had slept in this very room. Onto Rome to stay in one of Europe's oldest and most storied hotels. Which guest had stayed in my room?! Amundsen, Karen Blixen, maybe Ben Franklin. Then back to boring Canada. Love you England and I'll be back as much as I can. Looking forward to all and more of your channel. Great job.

It is amazing how we can look through these videos and see how much energy there was once in this home. I am 73 years old now and I have been in my house for 48 years. This place is a veritable treasure trove of antiquity! I would restore and upgrade this house and all it's beautiful furnishings and live there. The family pics would be displayed as a testament to the homes past. I would restore the Carriage House and the Atrium; incidentally, the tile work on it's floor is praiseworthy, and rescape the garden and put the Coy Pond or garden fountain back in place and make this the loveliest show house. Listen again after lets see & I think you may here "The Camera" as I did & It was very clear & easy to here, the only issue was the added music which likely would have made the voice I heard crystal clear if the music wasnt added. I HATE IT when people add ambiance music to these types of videos. Cameras still or moving can capture what the ears & eyes cannot & to add ambiance in a place like this just covers it up. I have to listen to this again. I was focusing on what the mirrors maybe showing or other places around the focal point of the camera to see something most are missing so I didnt hear the voice at all. Actually they put lights near windows when they started wiring houses for electricity because all the things they needed light for would naturally be situated near a window. The sewing table & mending basket & the chair that the person who did the mending sat in & the writing desk & the area that people sat in to read would all be near the window, so when they installed lights they would naturally be put near the window to light them in the evening. Also when you put up wallpaper it is put up in such a way that the seams on the wallpaper do not cast a shadow, (you should start by the window) so that they show less, so it would help your decorations look the best if you had your electric light come from a similar direction to your daylight.
@kathrynJMwest5 жыл бұрын
An old electrician told me that they used to put them near the windows because it made it harder for people to see into your house at night when your lights were on. Then net curtains came in and made the need redundant.

I have watched several of these in the past but this one makes me take a moment of pause, particularly with the urns of ashes sitting together in the sunlight of the window over looking the garden. So many books and photos and peoples memories just abandon. No one to carry on their memories. I have talked to people before who owned family homes like this and they would rather let the building fall down around them than to sell the home to someone who can restore it and reuse it, sad really. I was not there like you but I still had a strong sense, with the two people on the table, that you should have given them a GOOD AFTERNOON and PERHAPS WE SHALL SEE YOU AGAIN sort of a good by as you left. Such a home should have been saved and still could be. DO YOU EVER do a title search on such properties and find out who owns them if anyone. In the USA it is sometimes possible to pay BACK TAXES on such properties and then become the new owner.

Amazing video. Glad to see how it's not vandalized but shocked at the amount of old magazines, documents, letters, books and endless stacks of paper. Whoever lived there seems to have had a hoarding problem and just kept piling up stuff upstairs.

Some of those amazing pieces of furniture are still good but won't last forever in a damn environment. Too bad someone can't get the rights to save what can be before it rots like the ornate table. Even salvage the mantles and bannister's.

There is sometimes a reason why houses become abandoned, Myself and Partner bought a property a few years ago, and it was in the same state of the property you have visited, we bought it through auction, it was a 6 bedroomed detached house, and it was in a mess, there was damp, and it was furnished also with personal items from the occupants, most of the furniture was restored as it was in keeping with the property and some was discarded as it was beyond keeping, during the repair work to the roof and windows there were odd things which happened which could not be explained, We spent a lot of money on the building and restoring it, but we never felt settled there when everything was completed, it was a really nice home, but it never felt settled we sold it two years ago and it has been put up for sale again,
@marycwallace14255 жыл бұрын
Oh-oh...restoration can stir up spirits that weren't exactly settled to begin with...not cool when that happens. For that you'll need either someone knowledgeable in deliverance prayers and rituals, or maybe even an exorcism depending on the gravity of the infestation. Bumps in the night are to be expected,--bumps in the day? Not so much....errrr...
@lisarua4915 жыл бұрын
always get old properties blessed before you start restoration work. do some homework also it shows some respect to history and old occupants who once loved and cared for it. You'll have better vibes next time you help an old do up. Good luck if do decide to take on another
@alextilson58095 жыл бұрын
@@lisarua491 It was restoration and preservation which we did, the house was a property which was built in 1870's and it was a grade 2 listed building so everything had to be replaced like for like in accordance with english governance for old buildings of historical importance it was put back to how it was when it was first built we installed the traditional windows in the stone mullions and restored the internal decorative plasterwork along with using traditional plasterwork on the walls and replacing the failed roof we had to use traditional slate and one of the chimey stacks had to be rebuilt in the same style as the rest of them. Some furniture which was left in the reception hall, Sitting Room, Dining Room, and Morning Room and several of the bedroom's was all restorable and they all were made to look like new when they were cleaned and repaired. We spent just over £200k in restoring the building and making it a home, We lived there and loved it for a few years but it always had a very odd feeling even though we lived there, it never felt like home it is very hard to put into words, we had some family who came to stay and they said it feels spooky, may be there is a reason why sometimes buildings become abandoned, We sold it two years ago for £675k, and last year it sold for £560k. When we first bought it, the origional owner was the Sutherland family and they owned a coal mine in Yorkshire, Woolley Colliery near Barnsley England they were listed on the property deeds followed by Doctor Walker who owned it after the Sutherland's.

This is just to re-assure everyone that I am one of the many people who know the owners of this property, and that steps are in hand for the ashes to be interred. The property has been secured since this video was taken and there are no longer any items of value left in the property.

Coty Kaliszewski right at the beginning of the video, you could see an LED flashing on the external bell box, so the power is probably on, also I’m sure there was a clip with a light being switched on and off on the intro montage.
