detectors are not 'excavating devices', and technically not even prospecting nor mining devices... it's electronic equipment, that vaguely defines soil types (elements) for those properly trained to understand their usage - in the right hands a detector 'may' help to guide you 'where-to' implement prospecting methods - at that point you then apply the excavating methods 'as posted' - it's not a game and there's no such thing as 'cheating', it's a piece of equipment that if used correctly can help to mitigate against harmful environmental methods

Hand pan and shovel are invasive tools, a metal detector is non-invasive, so less damage. So in my opinion a metal detector SHOULD be allowed for environmental reasons if nothing else.

Mr. T Rex, If there's maybe ten thousand times more loose sediment sitting along the banks when the flood comes through, because everyone can dig the banks to their heart's content, there's maybe ten thousand times more brown crap in the water downstream. Think about how different the water looks when the river is high for the wet season, and how it looks when there's been unusual amounts of erosion upstream, like when you see hundred year floods, wildfires in the watershed, landslides from incompetently done roadcuts, etc. Rivers get like that sometimes no matter what humans did, and it kills fish, but allowing unlimited bank-cutting that's guaranteed to make even a normal winter high water level kill fish is as childish and short-sighted as pooping in the bath tub.

@@trex9194 There are about twenty different hobbies that have been just about completely shut down by people who were too immature to accept some limitations on shared spaces and resources. 4 wheeler guys tearing up meadows get intended trails closed. People ignoring burn bans in the backcountry in the summer get firepits in fire rings in paved campgrounds banned. Not only are the environmentalists right, but pretending they're not is what's going to get all prospecting shut down by being short-sighted and stubborn.

I can't tell you how many times I've had the cops called on me while detecting. People just get suuuuper pissed for whatever reason. Only once was I actually not allowed to MD. At a "wildlife reclamation area" on the side of my town. I live maybe 4 or 5 miles from it. But you are allowed to fish, hunt, swim, BBQ, walk your dogs, jet ski, but not detect. The vast majority of stuff I dig up is beer cans, broken bottles, lead, shotgun shells, fishing lures, and just a TON of trash. So lord forbid I go pic up and remove a bunch of trash on a wild life reclamation area. Just doesn't make sense.

Im in archaeology and the amounts of times people come to an excavation at night to detect is insane. Its People like that and not reporting important finds that I dislike. Otherwise, just check the rules of the area before you detect for christ sake and if you're good you do you

People assume when they see someone detecting, that every single hole in the area was left by the detectorist! So a LOT of places have laws against detecting, instead of against leaving holes, duh. As long as you show how you've filled in your holes, and all the trash you are REMOVING from the environment, 9 times out of 10 you are allowed unless there is already a law for that city. Seems getting permissions on private land is still easier than hoping whatever authority shows up isn't a poo head that day.

I understand Dan’s thought process but look at the process in a whole. A metal detector is not just a small 6” coil and a hand shovel to others. Like Dan said every time he shows where he finds gold,It get demolished. Now imagine if they all of a sudden realize you can use a metal detector. Well some metal detectors have coils that are a lot bigger and detect a LOT deeper. Multiply that times how many ppl all of a sudden see they can use a detector and the creek is done for. Dan got lucky not getting in any trouble. I love the guy and know he means no harm but some ppl who watch him are a whole different breed

I've been watching for a while and am a subscriber but I only just remembered an experience that might have keyed my interest. Some friends and I were on a mountain biking camping trip somewhere in the Western Sierra Nevada. While we were camping there a wedding was taking place between two panners who had fallen in love. The rings were made from gold from the very river where the wedding occurred on a bride spanning it. With everyone waiting on the bridge, the bride was having a freakout. She needed her shoes which were in the rented model T and some reassurance to walk out on that bridge. And I as a total stranger had the honor of helping her with both. I hope that the two of you are still happy.

Many years ago I was giving tours on a large gold dredge that had been active up until the early 1950s. Part of the tour was a gold panning demo. My grandfather had worked on the dredge, and thus knew of the small room under the bucket line where the "slop" from the line had spilled. That little room was gold rich to say the least. I would pan it out, then take the gold to the creek and salt the panning demo area. I must have sold a few hundred gold pans for the small store on the highway.

Love your videos, Dan! When it comes to the Panning Reserve and metal detectors, is the reason for the limitation just environmental impact, or is it to reserve an area for folks who want to pan, with the primary factors on finding gold being your ability to read the river to figure out where to dig, your panning ability, and your willingness to move material by hand? If the former, then allowing a detector makes sense. If it is the latter (or some variation there of - “levelling the playing field”), then excluding metal detectors makes sense. Either way, a case can be made for and against the detector, depending on the goals of the rules. Thank you for asking the question and reporting the results!

If I had to guess, they are probably worried that with a metal detector it will cause you to spread out and affect more areas with the same level of digging that people do without a detector which I think you’re right in that using a detector wouldn’t cause that.

Recreational hand panning is strictly limited to the following tools: hand pan and shovel. Recreational hand panning does not include the use of a metal detector. Use of a metal detector to explore for mineral or placer minerals is considered a prospecting activity. Section 11(1) of the Mineral Tenure Act requires that only a free miner or an agent of a free miner may enter mineral lands to explore for minerals or placer minerals, which includes prospecting for minerals or placer minerals with a metal detector. If the area isn't classified as "a recreational panning reserve" then presumably the rules that apply to those won't apply to that area? If that is the case, then all the inspector has done is clarify what the rules are for areas other than where you were detecting?

He got bitten by the bug and gets that look in his eye when he sees color, you know that look. Myself I am not that bad, I write as I am replacing the bearing and seal's for my pump I use for the high banker. Sitting next to a big ore crusher, (note to self, fix big diesel generator. ore crusher takes 440. Not gasoline engine powered like the little one) Running smaller pieces of ore through the little ore crusher. Ore that my neighbor brought in from one of his mines and has been piling up in his yard for over 40 years, it's in big grey totes on flat bed trailers, dozens of these totes in the black berry bushes, sand bag sacks of ore stacked up here and there and over there too, He's like 84 and hard rock mines in old family owned mines as his hobby on the weekend's after cutting down trees all week, and takes three months off a year to go prospecting. He's cleaning up what I am crushing,

i do agree with your logic about a detector having less impact then just digging away.

Never went to that occurred to me that you might plant anything! I've seen other people dig up the same ring several times but it never even was on my radar that anyone would ever think you would

I love my gold monster, and I find gold where others have missed too. My best time though, was when I found a little 3/10 grammar and i lifted some rocks out of the way and recovered another 8 grams worth of nuggets. The biggest was 2 grams.

a metal detector is not prospecting equipment. it just helps you determine where to prospect. You do move or even touch any dirt with it.

I was on the Tranquille, and some park rangers saw me with my metal detector, they said nothing to me, they just checked out my shovel, and said nothing! They gave me no hassle. Those people that say you can’t, don’t know. There making it up, cause they don’t have a detector, and are jealous. I’ve brought my detector there many times, and no hassle!

Reading the rules made me wonder about a bucket and classifiers. I do believe that a metal detector would be much better than digging up the entire waterway. Dan, you rock. No, I'm not saying that I think that you are stoned. By the way, I really like your respect for taking care of the river area.

I don't live in Canada. I don't know Canadian laws and regulations for parks, camping and recreation areas. I would think that if metal detectors were restricted or forbidden in that zone, it would have to be in writing and in public view for anyone to see. If there's no written restrictions mentioned for metal detectors in a legal format, laws or regulations book, posted conspicuously on a sign on site, then I see no reason to not being allowed to use metal detectors in that zone.

In the US and I believe CA also, the laws say "thou shall not do the following..." That means if it is not prohibited, it is allowed. In Russia and China, the laws say "You may do the following..." That means that if it not stated that it is allowed, it is prohibited. A lot of people will tell you that such and such is not allowed just because they don't know and don't do it themselves. If they don't like it, it must be bad.

Boots are classed as PPE. That stands for Personal Protective Equipment. So yes, a pair of rubber boots is prospective equipment by the strictest definition. If the argument then switches to, but boots are used for other things, then so are hand shovels which are allowed.

Metal detectors are locating devices, not mining equipment. A detectorist will use a small shovel, pick and pan, as any gold miner would have, but less degradation to the area is one of the benefits of the use of a metal detector. Another benefit is the detection of metal objects which could be dangerous to miners working without such a tool.

I would think metal can’t violate the rules. You are not processing or moving any dirt with it. You are still hand digging and processing with a pan. No processing is done with a detector, if anything it reduces the amount of earth you disturb by telling where to look and where to ignore.

The metal detector seems as though it is a better environmental solution, certainly versus digging a big hole and undermining the riverbank.
