I think the genius in this is what it doesn't show. I've used circle of fifths charts before, but there's so much noise with all the other notes and chords there next to what I want, it's not all that intuitive or helpful. This blocks all that out so I have what's relevant, and only that. Very cool, I'll be ordering one!

I got a chuckle out of this. I started learning guitar in 1959 with a copy of the Nick Manoloff Guitar Method Book 1. It came with a cardstock chord wheel, about 10 inches across, similar to the one you demonstrate here. I had never seen another one like it since. I sure wish I still had that book and chord wheel because I could still learn a lot more from it. Also Books 2 & 3 in the series.

Nice , but you can find this info on a chord wheel, right ? And learning basic music theory, these things are taught. it always amazed me how good musicians have always, never studied theory. They avoided it like the plague. And i wonder how much better they would have been , by studying theory. Sooner are later, all roads lead back to rome, or MUSIC THEORY, that is if you want to have progress on your instrument.

@jamesrmorris1952
@jamesrmorris1952 Жыл бұрын
The holy grail of music theory really is learning all the notes on your guitar so you know then instantly (it's not that hard) then learn Major and minor scales just one position and one Octave is fine at first, learn how chords are made, first major and minor then the extensions (there is a logical pattern) if you learn this you will have a base that makes learning a bit more advanced stuff easier, a lot easier. This video is okay but don't believe these "just learn this shape" videos they won't make a musician out of you.

C Major is 2 half-scales: CDEF,GABC. G major is 2 half-scales: GABC,DEF#G. D major is DEF#G,ABC#D. And so on, all around the circle of fifths. Each half-scale is 2 halfsteps, 2 halfsteps, 1 halfstep. Each half-scale is separated by 2 halfsteps, from the previous one: 2-2-1--2--2-2-1= a full scale.
@gtr1952
@gtr1952 Жыл бұрын
I think I 'sort of' agree with you Sean. I don't 'teach' guitar, but I have 'coached' a few folks from being a player to playing in a band. To your point here, knowing the 1, 6m, 4, 5 in C,A,G,E,D is a must know. What seemed to work best was finding a song, usually 60's or 70's, that used the famous 1, 6m, 4, 5. Playing that enough times so they refer to the chords in numeric and not letters. Then transpose it from C to A, to G and so on. People get confused between the chord and position of the chord in the song because they are the same name. So we would only say the key once, then refer to the chord by number. When they understand that everything else seems to click. Then use the tool for reference? If that makes any sense?? Just some thoughts... 8) --gary PS; I know I left out B and F, that was just to simplify it. 8)
