did you notice that when embry went down the basement that might not have been a dream and the monsters arent dangerous? the staircase is so long that embrys mom and dad could have tripped causing them to fall and die,the mosters thought they were food and ate them but with embry they recognised her as "the humanode who feeds us"and when she "woke up" she actually passed out and them monsters took her to bed and locked the door behind her,makeing it seem like a dream.

Notice how Embry never eats? I'm pretty sure that's what the monster means by "I'm you" (or whatever they said, I don't really remeber 😅) They mean it literally. Also, I feel like Embry enjoys feeding this monster inside of them because that's all they have left, their parents are gone and it's clear their lying about the state of their life to everybody else. It's like a toxic relationship, Embry is scared of these monsters but since they're all they have left they cling to them like a lifeline. I think she's scared of being lonely. Maybe Embry has anxiety also, and these monsters their feeding are them leaning into the toxic thoughts that anxiety gives you without a support system. Dr. Light could be a psychologist then, he tries to help her through this and they ends up pushing him away.

So! Here's my theory! Perhaps this character (Embry) has bipolar disorder and/or schizophrenia, bipolar disorder is where you have two personalities/alter egos and are mentally unstable and schizophrenia is basically where you're crazy and you see illusions, daydream, etc. A.) Schizophrenia theory Embry might have imagined the whole thing with her parents getting eaten because monsters AREN'T real, that's the whole hidden point of the game. Perhaps she lost her mind and is secretly a sociopath. Mayb she murdered her parents and is living under the illusion that they're still alive in the basement, feeding them every day. Maybe she's imagining all the roars and knocks, and every day she tries to stay composed by writing down dates on the calendar. Maybe she stares at the ceiling for most of the day, hence why the days end so quickly. My sociopath theory aligns with her "pushing" the doctor down the stairs, perhaps she was living under the illusion that the monsters would eat him, when in reality, SHE did the killing without her knowing. Also, at the end, she spoke to herself - maybe she was just imagining it, talking to herself and eventually taking her own life in that very basement. Not to mention that schizophrenic people have vivid and disturbing dreams often, and they sometimes can't differentiate between dreams and reality - she has many disturbing nightmares in this game, that may back up my theory. B.) Bipolar theory Take note of most of what I mentioned above, and let's focus more on her talking to herself at the end. That may have been her split personality, the one that took her parents' lives, but she's living life as her other, "innocent" side. An important thing to pay attention to is the fact that she NEVER eats in the game - she throws all the food down into the basement. I feel like that the game is trying hint that she's actually keeping herself fed. Maybe the doctor was a metaphor for her childish, innocent and hopeful side - the sanity she had left, but she lost her sanity to the basement shortly before the strange ending. And maybe the cryptic ending with the last line being "we're still hungry" is a metaphor for Embry's hunger for simple food growing into a more sociopathic kind; the greed for power and thirst for blood, in the end she loses it and takes her own life, thinking she killed her doppelganger when it was just herself. I feel like this game really draws parallels with fighting addiction and denying outer help and dealing with it on your own and it sort of eating away at you no matter how much you may feed your addiction it will always be hungry until you can stop and say “no” so I think that’s cool
