The bliss view is actually an anomaly. This hill had always been a vineyard, but a fungus infection had ravaged the vines, so they were removed, and then the land left fallow to recuperate and for the soil be treated with anti-fungal agents before replanting new vines. The bliss photograph was shot during that brief period of being a grassy hill. I suspect that it was so unusual to see the grass that it was part of what drew the photographer, O’Rear’s attention to it, as he would have been used to seeing the vineyard. He said he was on the lookout for fresh green grass due to a storm in the area earlier, so he was primed to see it.

Your intro made me think of how much of an effect the human factor has in the perception of a photograph, and the way it makes you feel. Mushroom Cloud Over Nagasaki is a picture showing the aftermath of a bomb that killed around 74,000 people, yet the Falling Man before it gives a much more visceral immediate reaction, even though the related event resulted in a paltry 2800± in comparison. I don't know if that's just my nationality and the relevance of it or the recency of the event in comparison, but something that struck me, either way.
