My favorite hollywood story I've ever heard is Don Rickles walks into this restaurant with this girl he's dating and he sees that Frank Sinatra is in the restaurant as well. So Don tells the girl he's going to the bathroom and he goes up to Sinatras table and says "hey Frank I'm here with this girl I really like and I want to impress her. Could you do me a favor? In about 5 minutes could you come up to my table and say hi to me so that she can see that we're friends?" So Frank says "yeah sure. No problem." So Don goes back to his table and about 5 minutes later Frank walks up to Don's table sticks his hand out for a hand shake and says "hey Don! It's good to see you! How have you been?" And Rickles looks at his hand and then looks up at Frank with this disgusted annoyed look on his face and says "come on Frank! What are you doing? We're trying to eat here! Can't you just leave us alone?!" And Frank Sinatra is stuck there with his hand out and all he can do is just pull his hand back and walk away embarrassed! Lmao it's my favorite story I've ever heard!

When it came to Kirby, there was a lot of "revenge" moves made on all sides. When Marvel got him back, I've heard they purposely tried to embarrass him and set him up for failure. Jimmy Olsen was always wacky, he turned into a turtle man (twice), porcupine man, you get the idea....but this was so far 'out there' you needed to read it through a telescope. I think that's why S v B hurt so much - turning the goofy but innocent and loyal JO into a tough undercover CIA operative who gets shot in the head after a few minutes on screen. I didn't like James Olsen on Supergirl (great character, but why that name? New character, new name) but this wasn't 'Superman's Pal', just a random....

Jack Kirby was brilliant, bursting with creativity and ideas and stuff, but he wasn't the greatest writer. Occasionally, his writing overlapped with the brilliance of his art, but usually, the art was all that carried an issue. But "insult comedy," an almost purely verbal medium, doesn't translate into comic book art.
@d-manthecaptain13822 ай бұрын
I get the feeling that Rickles didn't care about this at all, since there's that clip where Letterman brings it up to him, and shows him the cover, and Rickles glosses over it to talk about something else. If Rickles was more passionate about the crossover, it would've been funny if he wrote up some insults and mailed them over for Kirby to use in the story.
