As much as I'd enjoy watching you do a full engine out rebuild, even here in the UK (It's spiritual homeland) engine parts aren't cheap for the later V8 Range Rovers, so before stripping it much further, I'd be tempted to start pricing up EVERYTHING you know you'll need, plus anything you COULD need in order to do the rebuild. In some cases It's occasionally only fractionally more expensive to source a fully reconditioned engine. It might even work out better value to find some company this side of the pond to buy a recon unit from and get it shipped over (less rare over here = less money over here, and as the £ is worth sod all at the minute, it could be worth looking into). Even something like a genuine full gasket set Is likely to set you back well over 500 USD, so when you start adding up all the little "Worth replacing while it's apart" bits, it starts getting alarmingly pricey really fast.

Pops always told me, "If your going to do something, don't do it half assed." She fought to survive to this point so I save rebuild it for her. Thank you Joe for lending the tool kit. Hey brother glad those tools look to be working smooth for you so far! As soon as I saw the copper I realized I should have sent you my long straight edge that I used to check my block as well. This whole thing is deja vu lol. If the block isn't warped and the crank isn't damaged, since I think getting oversized bearings might be nearly impossible, I definitely vote to go further than I did and do a rebuild and successfully save one of these AJ133s for once! After seeing the hole and the guide and how insanely lucky it was for that bank to not have already completely skipped time, I think this thing spiritually wants to live. I'm hyped for it!

Looking at the valves and the scoring on cylinder walls, the engine is drawing you into rebuild. Having disassembled to this level, take head out, do valve seating and change head gasket. I like the way you are presenting the case. Your presentation is pleasant and videos are learning schools for us. Good job Waldo.

I would say rebuilding the engine is the better option, because I think replacing it even with a very low mileage engine will leave you at the same spot as now considering of course how long you plan to keep the car. Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy watching them.

Full rebuild... the problem I see is getting those buggered mounting points repaired to 'as new' condition. Aren't these essentially the Ford multi-valve ohc engines? Any way you could bring one of those into it without too much hassle? I mean, I'm not pushing for a Coyote installation but if it would fit, wow... imagine the possibilities!

enjoyed the video as usual. my mechanic is fond of saying, whenever you see problems with the head gasket, it's almost always because the cooling system hasn't been properly maintained; so you should probably give the cooling system some love before all is said and done

From a fellow rural New Hampshire Engineer (originally from the UK). This is seriously one of the most awesome channels. You do things dead on right and you have none of the typical YT gimmicks and annoying crap. Someone made reference to Ed China in the comments. I think that's an excellent comparison as you clearly do this for the love of Engineering. I'm dealing with a North Eastern 2004 Hummer H2 at the moment with a rusty frame. Sounds about right, I often think "I don't want to go too far with this" at the beginning of a project then end up thinking "well I'm this far already" or "it'd be nice if I did this" so much that all of a sudden I'm looking for parts and spending more time/money than anticipated... Good luck with the build! Copart rebuilds are something I hope to do some in the future, maybe once I finish the ever growing list of other projects

It would be a cool video series to follow the engine being rebuilt, but honestly it may exceed the cost of what the vehicle is worth very quickly, also I would suggest either rebuilding or replacing the alternator with that much oil getting on it like that. It won’t be long for this world and it’s so much easier to access right now while you have everything disassembled.

My OPINION: Pull cylinder heads, replace head gaskets, reassemble car, drive car as is, use savings from not paying for a rebuild to buy other car products to keep channel alive (because your content is the bomb-digity and only getting better), engine swap with diesel engine when the gasoline engine inevitably dies because it is a poor design, enjoy life.

Dana 70 front axles are as rare as hens teeth, used by dodge and international from 1958-mid 1970s. He'd be time, money and effort ahead if he used a Dana 60 dually front axle from a square body.

In for a penny, in for a pound. A rebuild would make sense but I’ll just throw this out there. You could retrofit it with an LS3. It would be more reliable and repairs wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Up until this point, I've been impressed with your ability to do just about anything you put your mind to. But, this? Even if you rebuild the engine and get it "like new", you're whistling past the graveyard on this one. There's still another million things that could go wrong, most, by design, very expensive to fix/replace. Exhibit one: You were holding your breath on the air suspension. Do yourself a favor and push this thing into the nearest river/lake/canal. Then, report it stolen. Let the insurance company pay or write it off your taxes. PS There's a reason why so many have failed.

I had this engine on my 2011 Jag XF: it was awesome. The Jags for whatever reason didn't seem to suffer quite as much from the timing tensioner design flaw, though it was still present. On the subject of head gaskets, I don't recall these engines being known for problems BUT they have had several redesigns of the water pump and associated plumbing around it. I replaced my water pump, it was noisy and loose at 60,000Km which isn't long at all. I wonder if the water pump died in this beast and it ran HOT for a little while? It's good your lifting the heads off, there's lots you can check. One other thing I learnt - every screw and faster going into the head or the block must never be overtightened by even a quarter NM - there are two torques, just right and stripped thread... You'll notice the water pump bolts are long and fine pitched and it's easy to do that. Run them down gently until the first click on the torque wrench and stop - the old trick of 'make it click again to be sure' is enough to make some aluminium confetti!

It has been very interesting watching this series so far. I remember sometime ago when I had issues with my Honda Accord engine. I figured that rebuilding the engine would be better and more cost effective than just replacing it. This is a Range Rover. It's better you evaluate the cost of an engine rebuild vs an engine replacement, even though watching you take your time to rebuild the engine would be fun to watch. You should compare the cost of the two and do what will be cheaper and save more time.

Compression test is a good start. Best to follow it up with a leak down test. To zero in whether it it leaks compression thru intake exhaust rings or gasket

Water Vapor is normal. I've had a few of these and also did a few timing jobs and rebuilds. At least you don't have to deal with the Super Charger! Gotta love the Jag 5.0l

I don't know if you stated the mileage on this project but what I see so far is pull the engine and do it right . I just did the timing chains and guides on 2004 Range Rover for the second time two weeks ago, the first time four years ago I puled the engine so I could reseal all the oil leaks on the BMW engine at the time of doing the chains and guides and thought it would be the last time I would have to do it. The only problem was the main chain tensioner had a flaw in that the oil passage to lube the chain was not drilled to oil the chain and guide. She lasted 40K and the guides let go. This time I did the job in frame because there were no oil leaks to fix. The old girl has 174k on her now and I love this car and going to drive her until the wheels fall off. I bought the parts kit this time from Atlantic British and they sent Rover parts and the main guide had the correct part number on the box but the guide was wrong and packaged at the rover factory so check all parts carefully.

Well back in 1983 I ordered a brand new 1984 Z28. After picking it up I was looking around under the hood checking out the 5.0 H.O. engine while it was running. I noticed a slight rattle and after a few minutes I found it. It was a Snap-On 10 inch extension with a 9mm socket on it laying on the exhaust manifold behind the A.I.R tubes on the passenger side. A BRAND new car with about 50 miles on it at that time.
