For my latest painted furniture makeover, I found this shelf sitting curbside on trash day and decided to upgrade it with a new painted finish.
Thanks to Jord for the sponsorship!
This shelf was going to be thrown in the dump but I gave it a beachy furniture makeover using latex paint, pallet wood for the top, paint blending on the back, and added some metal legs! A great example of how to upcycle and using reclaimed wood to make your own custom furniture.
I'd like to say it has sold but I think I might keep this one instead of profit off of it!

Not sure where you are located but I've seen not as nice bookshelves go for $300 to $600 in Delaware seaside shops.

Dallas, Tx area. Id probably say $200-$300 around my area. Closer to $200 if I try to liquidate it on FB Marketplace. If I had a brick and mortar store, I could probably ask $400. I wish I lived closer to a coastal area. I know it would demand more there. :)

Keep it I really don’t care for painted wood. However sometimes there’s no other option. Besides your legs are a great choice looks very MCM. 👍🏾 So many uses for it anywhere in your house. 🏡

@Dan This came from one of my neighbors that had it mounted in the garage for paint supplies. It seems like he built it from plywood and painted the sides that showed when mounted, which is why you see the top and right side unpainted when I start. I get a good amount of comments from people that dont like paint over wood and I understand that to a certain extent when it comes to painting over antique or vintage wood. This one was definitely not anything to worry about with the wood though. Made with cheap materials but built sturdy. That's all I needed. :)

That Shabby Guy I’m not knocking you. You always do a Great 👍🏾 job! Obviously 🙄 or you wouldn’t have such a large following. I thought what you did with the top and back was very original. The hairpin makes it.

Rite. Everything in my house except electronics & appliances is recycled. Daughter groaned a few days ago cuz i pulled over to pick up a lil shelf that had 6 cubies(3 open back &3 close back). Then she saw it when i was getting it out the van and was like, mom let me help you with that. She grabbed it from me and carried it inside and ended up taking it to her room and made a cat bed tower for our 4 cats 😂😂 damn kids 😂😂😂

I've picked up and refinished lots of stuff from the curb. Found a coffee table in great shape. It wasn't too tall and had a cute drawer. I just polished it up, put batting and foam on top, then put a light grey material with polka dots on top. It's now a bench behind my antique footboard. Total price....less than $8

I love watching ppl change & revamp furniture. Do you work out of a home garage? How are you filming all this? Is someone helping you behind the scenes? Where/how did you learn to clean, sand, paint, stain, varnish, etc? Did your dad teach you? Are you self taught? Did you take a home ec class? I'm very curious because I know nothing but have dabbled with furniture painting/beautifying in the past and would like to do so again with small kitschy pieces again at some point but I'm not sure if I'm qualified, haha! Where would you recommend a noob begin? Do you have how-to videos that teach about particular topics like just knowing how to sand? Or how to pick the right paint? I LOVE the top of your bookshelf. It's my favorite thing in a long time. I am a fan of natural looking wood as well as white furniture with pops of color -- and turquoise is a favorite! Thus I'm a fan of what you did here - especially with the blending that you said you don't really know how to do. (You should link the video tutorial you watched in your description) Re: This particular piece, I however, don't like the black legs. They're cool looking enough but I feel like bookshelves should remain firmly flat on the ground. Thanks for your time.

Nice job. I also like the rough hewn top. At first I thought the bottom did not have enough of a lip to balance out the rest of the piece -- just one layer of wood with no built up edge; seems this may have been a topper shelf for a buffet or something. BUT once you put those legs on it really changed the look of the piece and that seems fine now. I would have chosen wooden bun feet, but the midcentury metal legs are an inspired choice. Nice job. This has a lovely beachy feel with the top that looks like driftwood and the turquoise backing board. NEAT!

Shabby, I also want to thank you for the poly over the latex technique. Since the semi or gloss latex alone doesn't seem hard enough for me, it seems always rubbery and never quite dry, and not durable. I have been using rustoleum with a brush since that is the only oil based paint available. This is much more easy. I also never thought of just spray paint over the wood to prevent bleed through. I have always used the "ORIGINAL kills", thanks again. This is too nice to put books into it. Maybe just a few baskets and nic-nacs so the blue back shows. VERY impressed with you! You should send pics to some interior designers in your area, you will get over 400 for this. They are just going to tell you that they want MORE!

Love the paint colors, love the board top-not crazy about the legs. The board top makes it look farmhouse style. Metal mid century legs look out of place and time. I would have preferred something more country and painted to match, for the legs.

Impressed you sanded it to get rid of the dirt. Love the top. Would have preferred nails on the back if it is for sale. Staples are good for ourselves but not the best for others. They don't hold up as well. Also think you should paint the legs white, but that again is a matter of taste. Obvious care taken in the paint and finish jobs. Good work! I think $120. is what people would pay for a bookcase but it is probably worth more, so keep it.
