This is my final day in Sarawak, so this will be the final vlog in the Borneo series. Both Kuching and Kota Kinabalu have been awesome. It's been a great change of pace visiting this part of Malaysia. I'm already eager to plan another trip here, so I'll be back very soon. For now, enjoy the final vlog from Kuching, Sarawak.

The building at 28:10 is the old sarawak legislative assembly. They're repurposing the building into an art's centre that can hold plays, concerts, recitals etc. The project's expected to be completed by 2027.

I used to work at that hospital for 11 years until I left in 2020. I'm Sarawakian, but I moved to near KL. The sad thing about East Malaysia is that it’s a huge landmass, even bigger than West Malaysia, but with a much smaller population. That’s why it’s not uncommon to see most places empty or less crowded. Because of the small population, many things, particularly related to tourism, have regressed despite the government spending lots of money on development. For example, the orchid garden you visited at 12:00-I first went there about 12 years ago when it first opened. It was a prime area with many orchids in bloom. Just two to three years later, the whole place looked deserted, and the flowers were unkempt. This has persisted until the time you visited. I'm surprised such a place could run for so long. Kuching is a nice place to live. The good areas are not in the city itself but in the residential neighborhoods, with many new townships and nice houses, which are even better than many West Malaysia cities.

Hey Ben, if you do plan on visiting churches , a little tip is that apart from mass times, usually the side door is open (it may not be so obvious but you could ask around). Very few churches open front doors like St Micheal Catholic church in Ipoh

Ben nooo...not Indian influence!! No offence but Sarawak/Kuching is the least Indian-influenced place in Malaysia. The items u saw at the Indian St. pedestrian mall are very much Borneo-centric stuff. Just because the name has the word Indian there doesn't mean you'll find lots of Indian-ish stuff there. The Muslim-Indian-owned stores on this street are just restaurants and textile, fyi, and further in, those selling spices all the way to the other end facing the Waterfront.

Ben, you don't know what an orchid looks like? The hanging flower is a type of heliconia. The red flower is a type of ginger. The orchids are the ones growing up on those sticks with all the air roots and in those hanging pots. Bro-mee-lee-ads.

Hey, Ben. I am the worlds best bargainer. The trick is to ask the shopkeeper how much lower he can go. Use that figure to bring him to a better price. So. You "What's the best you can do on this RM17 shirt?" He " you can have it for 15." You " How about 12?" Or you can get him even lower " I would take two for RM 10 each." He would prolly give it for 13 or 14.

Your in an area that doesn’t get many tourists, especially westerners. I’ve been to countries like Madagascar, Ethiopia, the island of Sumatra and parts of Kenya and people are always interested in you and want to say something etc 😊. Probably 60% or more of the world doesn’t have mass tourism!

🐱Kuching is "Cat" in English. Maybe it is a good idea for you to interview Kuchingese (can I even say that..mm) ...ask each person you bumped into "what's the story behind that name, 'Kuching'❓ I, myself, don't have a clue.😅 Ask the city people, then the kampung people. That'd be a good video...i think 🤔 Those people in charge of the public parks surely are not doing their job. Where is the fund being used..... the Tourism Board should see this and the state government should be notified. Thank you, Ben.

@@byteme9718 no worries, thats only proper and just the way the world works. The insecure Indians changed Bombay to Mumbai, same thing with Myanmars (formerly Burmese). Or even the Irish changed many of their towns' names (the Republic, not Northern Ireland), and the list goes on, actually. So, its pretty clear that the Malays arent the only insecure people in this world ☺️. Just chill, will ya 🙌🏼

@@veronicacasey454 oh okay..slight difference, though same spirit i.e. "localisation" ...anyways, the (current) Brits dont care about these colonial empire legacies even - as the recent UK riots reflect ie Brits dont wanna know why/how the emigrants end up in their cities . Long argument short, why should the natives otherwise care.

Do not worry about mispronounced words like "park" - give it a go! You surely helped strangers with accents in NYC. Strangers will help you in MY. I leave Monday to spend September seeing KL-Kuching-Penang-??? Chat with the locals, they know the really great places. Restaurants, parks, stores, ... They visit them all daily. You're clearly loving the place, let it return the love. My next step will be to pick a new hometown for an MM2H app. If Kuching is what I hope it is (and your videos seem to confirm so), that's my first choice with S-MM2H. Keep up the good work.
